Porsche 993 GT2 review. Is this road racer special the ultimate air-cooled 911 turbo?

- The Porsche 911 GT (better known as the 993 GT2) will always be one of the most coveted 911 of all. Built in very limited numbers mainly for homologation reasons, it went on to dominate the FIA GT2 class during the late nineties. Only 7 RHD examples were ordered in the UK and this is one of them.

"I wish it wasn't so rare"
That is the sign of a genuine enthusiast. Enjoying the car and wishing more people could experience the same. Harry you're a national treasure and a really good bloke.
Thats the kind of attitude which sets you apart from the majority of the motoring press and collectors in general. Absolutely brilliant.
Definitly
Couldn't agree with you more and very well put!
Excellent, exciting review with a level headed reviewer. Therapy for speed freaks and petrol heads.
Always makes a fast car, feel fast.... unlike other big reviewers I might mention.
Well said!
Harry's patter is so good - such GREAT commentary, on all his videos, farm or car, so well 'scripted' - but probably not scripted, just off the cuff - so professional - a real expert, of great experience; and as we know, a genuine and proper car enthusiast. Many thanks for your videos. Nice car today, too! Best wishes.
It looks so tiny compared to today's cars, absolutely gorgeous.
it looks the right size compared to today's cars lol?
Harry is over 6" and fits well enough. Yes, he is slim but what's the need for a cabin so wide these days? Comfort? What comfort?
@@gustavoflorio5383 safety foremost
@@blackjacket_ not in a 911, it's danger foremost lol
@@blackjacket_ lateral impact zones doesn't have to do with wider cabins but with thicker doors.
Harry smiling like a kid in a sweet shop. Understandable of course.
Yes of course!!! such childish emotions do not attract fake interest to the video
Love it !
Harry Heaven 😁
12:57 - I was holding the grab handle in my living room wondering if that bloomin Golf was going to bother to stop.
The Porsche looks like a real bit of kit and I really love the old school turbo cars myself. Glad it wasn't taken out by someone on their phone or half asleep.
I was scared as well. 😅
Thinking the same thing....
I grew up around this area - the number of people who thought they could 'nip across the main road' there was crazy. It's not like there isn't decent approach viewing either. Maybe that's the issue - cars were seen coming from some distance so you have time to realise you might make it...
Yep I missed a heartbeat , happened to me and a Big Bang, not good that was 10 yrs ago and I still cringe when I see it.
F40! Can’t wait for that review.
I noticed that. The second countach seems to have gone. A decent replacement by any stretch.
@@alcazartin unless I'm mistaken, the "second" Countach is just being stored for a mate. Harry only has the one.
@@treyquattro "Only"
@@alcazartin pretty sure Harry said he wasn't that big a fan of the f40 either
@@Maurice_Moss He seems like a shrewder investor than most car nuts, whatever he thinks of the driving experience it totally wouldn't surprise me if he'd quietly picked up an F40 on the sly.
Wow, holy grail 993 review, and the prospect of an f40 review also 😱
993 is the best looking Porsche ever made. Period. It's the pinnacle of the brand that can never be duplicated.
Harry teasing us with a glimpse of an F40 too.
The stance of these is just incredible.
Utterly jaw dropping, looks the part, sounds the part , back when engineering and stripped out limited edition specials weren't just a marketing gimmick. You can certainly tell why these are worth the price of a small caribbean island . I want one . !! 👍 👍 👏 👏
I am really looking forward to see what all those "special editions" made by the marketing department instead of the racing department will be worth in 20 years. You can't fake passion.
I agree, its a spectacular car. I love basic cars, modern cars are just devoid of much engagement.
Incredible... I would love to have a collection of vintage porsches when I become wealthy enough
1:56 Funnily enough, in the spirit of the name confusion with the 993 GT(2), that Viper was actually called the Viper GT2, not the GTS-R. The "GTS-R" badges on the car were meant to pay tribute to the actual GTS-R race car, and Dodge confused the hell out of everybody by doing that.
"beautifully chosen ratios, but you wouldn't expect anything else from Porsche"
Yeah, wouldn't that be nice.
Sincerely
Boxster and Cayman
Well they didn't have to pass so many emissions regulations back then.
Thats where the PDK makes more sense IMO. Manual great for motorway and unrestricted German ones but on UK twistys your mostly in 2nd
Spelling would be nice too. It's BoxSter.
@@nicksokolis6343 It's the wrong solution, the boffins need to try harder.
@@MrOvershoot The PDK has almost the same ratios.
One of the greats. What a great era when the race cars competed on the track and these homologation specials where released. A period that we will probably never see again. Best, most detailed video about this unicorn.
That camera angle with the scoop right in the mirror is just perfect.
Took me a couple of seconds to realise what the image in the mirror was 😲
It not only shows the scoop, it also hides the speedometer 😉
I would imagine a very large party of the nurburgring time differences has to do with the (enormous) evolution of tyre technologies since the mid 90s to now, evolution of brakes and of course partial resurfacing at the nurburgring.
It would be tough to estimate what a GT2 could do today on modern tyres with modern brake pads/discs, even on a purposely rented out track: They're worth so much money today that even if someone would attempt it, there's an awful lot at stake with very little to prove...
I'd be amazed if not at least 40 seconds could be shaven from the time set in the 90s to today with the above changed, though.
yup, upgrade consumables and that's a real-world benchmark
Lower kerbs, straightened sections, the Flugplatz is about 1.5 metres lower, sections have been widened - plus the resurfacing.
Completely agree, even on 'old' tyres the car could be 20-30 secnds faster, driven by a professional (i.e someone who isn't worried about damaging the car) just due to how much the track has been changed.
Whist tyre tech has improved probably more than anything, and brakes too - chassis and dampening technology has come an awful long way since the 90's too. It'd be interesting to know how the stiffness of this compared with a 992 chassis - I'd guess it'd be chalk and cheese.
@@Beer_Dad1975 Absolutely right. Brakes, tyres and modern damping are all straightforward, easy fixes. Not sure how to evolve the chassis without making permanent changes however. So would be interesting to say the least. Doubt we'll see it, though....unfortunately.
Cars are also way more powerful
That sound is just so nostalgic to my ears; I loved riding in my parents' 80s 911s as a kid just for the sound in the cabin alone. It's such a howl!
Back from when fast cars were still driven by the person at the steering wheel and not the CPU. Thanks for taking us on another amazing ride Harry
I really really never get why people give Harry a thumb down
Greta (down)Thumberg, or other reviews who are jealous.
Zoomers don't have the patiences for a thorough reviewer like Harry.
Not to mention, there's no catchphrase for them to beat to death, like on doug's video's.
I always assume they have big fat fingers and are just hitting it by accident.

993 GT2 is literally my all time favorite 911! I'm very pleased to see such a thorough and professional review!
This is the car that made me fall in love with the Porsche 911. I was 12 when I attended a race on one of Bucharest's airports in the 90s. Most of the cars were hillclimb machines and one of them one a red 911 GT2 with the biggest wing on the back. The sheer width of that care was awe inspiring! Wide arches, wide wing and wide slick tires. And the noise, the noise made people gather around whenever they started that thing. thought it was the coolest car ever! I still think it is!
Harry's videos always seem to tell me exactly what I wanted to hear. He described every part of this car that I was most curious about. No waffle, well informed facts, experienced driving, and certainly not holding back!
I agree and its why I come to watch. His videos are much more drivers, behind the wheel focused, which is a bit of a departure, especially from some of the younger youtubers.
Going through all the 911s in my mind, this might be my favourite one. 993 generation is such a beautiful car in terms of overall proportion, and the GT2 version is such a beast. If I could choose two 911s, I would get this one & 964 RSR.
Agreed. 964 and 993 were the pinnacle of Porsche. Last hand made cars before they cheapened out and built the cheapy Boxter-based 996. They made enormous profits with that assembly line though. But when you close a 964 or 993 door you can literally HEAR the quality difference.
This one does not take prisoners. Reminds me of the orignal turbo, do not apply if you a are of a nervous disposition. Brilliant.
The way you explain a test drive makes me feel like I’m driving it myself. True indication of a great automotive writer. Cheers!
Had you not written it first, I was going to make the same comment 😃👍
@@thefamilyrobbo Great minds…am I right?
@@wholespeed 👍😃
The radio/cassette is only used while standing in the traffic jam on the german autobahn...
Thank you for sharing this experience, driving this rare 911, with us!
It doesn't get any better than a well kept 993, just a stunning ageing example of a true legend, love my 993 Turbo S, not quite as nice as what you've got there Harry, Rj in Oz
When the hammer drops at 11:24 everything starts to go blurry, it's amazing they let Porsche customers buy this car from the factory. It's got the same power/weight as my 991.1 GT3 and this car was on the road almost 20 years ago. Amazing! Thanks, Harry.
Cars were by their construction, lighter 20 years ago, so the fact it weighs as much as a lightweight now, is no great achievement.
I would love to see you get the Viper GTS R back for a review! I'm on my 7th Viper and never knew about that particular test you all did at EVO. I will be searching the web for issue #3 now. Those 2 cars together at Lemans are legendary.
I read the same test but in an aussie mag I'm sure. I've tried to hunt it down many times over the years. I remember GT2's owner's conclusion; his car needed more top end to live with the GTS-R! I'd still take the GT2 everyday of the week though.
Once again Harry, thanks for the humble nature of your sharing.
Harry’s enjoyment and passion is infectious and a joy to watch 👍
It looks like a restomod of an early 911 turbo. That's why I think it looks so cool.
What a machine, absolutely mega.
And what a video! Thank you so much for bringing us along for the ride Harry.
Amazing car and beautifully presented, thanks Harry.
Wow..what a car! Thank you for sharing it with us Harry. I for one really appreciate it.
Thats great Harry, very nostalgic and it bought back a lot of very fond memories, this is a vey sweet example of the 993 GT...thanks, well done and a great video......and yes ."A Lot of Fun"
These cars are masterpieces. By far my favourite air cooled 911.
Homologation rules really gave us some amazing performance cars, the 993 GT2 could well be the best of the lot. Though I wouldnt have ever described it as a 'Graham Norton car' 😂 great video Harry
😆😆😆
One of the best looking 911's ever. This and the 964 3.6 Turbo. I have spent quite a lot of time in both. The 911GT has different dampers to the 993 turbo which is why it feels a much nicer car to drive. I have driven both varieties. The 95 model and the 98 evo version that ran the larger K24 turbos. The latter being far more exciting car to drive and quite a weapon. They also used thinner gauge steel in the construction of the 911GT
What a gorgeous looking car !I absolutely love it ,great review again Harry !
As a general car enthusiast this channel is gold, I’ll probably never come within spitting distance of one of these mighty machines let alone actually driving one but the way Harry delivers his content makes you feel part of it, like you’re sat in the passenger seat.
Thank you Harry.
I love that blower whine… reminds me of the 917… great video and glorious analog Porsche! Go away all you electronic gizmos! Thanks Harry!
Liked the video straight away. This and the 964 Turbo are my all time favourite 911's
Thanks! Really enjoy the combination of historical context, vehicle features, and your enthusiasm. All the best.
Your enthusiasm comes across loud and clear, Harry. The 993 specials are my favorites. A lot of nostalgia for the simple, analog experience.
"Ever present" as are Harry's garage uploads. I'm as thankful as ever for the show.
Thanks Harry for this upload
My all time favourite car would have this over any other car
One of my all time favourite Porsches! Thank you Harry for another wonderful review, highlighting this is a very analog car & all the better for it. I love the view of the huge rear spoiler air intake in the driver's door mirror!!
Issue 3 of evo was my first I think as a teenager.. The GT2 was so exotic even as a familiar 911 shape. Going from reading autocar and other magazines that had to review boring stuff, discovering evo was real fuel to my love of cars back then.. Thanks again Harry for making it happen!
Sunday with a gin and tonic and Harry at the wheel. This one’s a classic and Harry waxed positively poetic. Thanks, Bud, for sharing your fun. Cheers from the ranch in NC.
Omg you scared the crap out me and I wasn’t in the car
Love you Harry take it easy
It's cool to hear both Harry and Chris Harris (on the 964 Turbo 3.6) say turbolag was and is exciting! I totally agree!
What a stunning car. This is unquestionably my favorite Porsche design and maybe even car ever made. Stunning! Great review as always Harry! Cheers
Once a gent told me a pretty cool story
He was dailying his Porsche about 8 years ago, and got a minor incident, if i remember correctly it was a flat tire that needed a tow and to refurbish a bit one of the wheels.
Next year he got a massive insurance fee, called the company to complain because he thought that such a minor thing wasn't motive to charge him so much.
The answer from the insurance was hilarious: Sir, you are daily driving a half a million pound car.
It was one of the 7 RHD units, and it was the year when those cars became so appreciated. Until that moment, he was completely unaware of the price rise
Engineering at it`s best. Thank you for doing this video.
Love that over the shoulder shot. Can see the huge intakes in the wing mirror!
I enjoyed this video as much for Harry’s total giddy demeanour at getting behind the wheel of one of his favourite cars, so infectious! Chapeau 👏
Love the 993! Just rebuilt one. Brand new, but better!
This is without question….THE BEST LOOKING PORSCHE of all time.🙏🏽
Proper car, and an excellent review as always from Harry himself! What a legend, and the car ain’t so bad either 😉
Thanks so much, Harry, and keep up the great work on the uploads 👍🏼
Fantastic review Harry
I see the twinkeling in your eyes when you hit the gas pedal... I can tell, you're a happy man in that Porche ! I would be happy too if I was in your place... ;-)
Holy crap, how did you get your hands on that? One of my all time favourites too. Had the 1/18 scale on the shelf for well over 20 years. It’s one of those cars that looks awesome from every angle.
Edit- just shows how good looking the GT2 is, I didn’t even see the F40 in the background till i read the comments. Was too focused.
Wonderful car. No one quite knows how to fill out a wheel arch like Porsche does. The wheel size, the dish of the wheel and the tyre profile are utterly perfect
One of the best cars ever made. Every time i see a Porsche GT product, it reminds me of how capable this company really is. They guys from Stuttgart know how to make proper cars. Keep it up by making these exceptional videos!
Harry, your old red one is back up for sale, had 30k spent on it...if you wanted it back!
Harry. I remember the "GT2" at Le Mans, with a lot of the independent driveres/garagists, driving this baby. SHe was never the fastest, but there was always a GT2 993 spitting flames each time it changed gears. I love this one.
The gt2 was pretty successful during the early years. I remember it was PBR champion and it was a class win at le mans a few times..... The problem is that it was competing with car that should have been in a different class. Like the oreca vipers went a class down because it couldn't compete with the F1 gtrs and the clks, etc .....
Incredible video! Very thnakful for having an opportunity to see this video!
Fantastic review on a legend, thanks Harry
I do like the old 911 body shape. Back from when Porsches were small enough to thread down a country road like a rat up a drainpipe!
Yeah me to, in real life the curves look better than the new ones.
Beautiful car ,the aero particularly the wing ,is a work of art 🎨
I know it’s an article of internet comment faith that 911s are now too big, but seriously they still thread down country roads like the proverbial rat. Mine enjoyed many an exciting blat around Lincolnshire and surrounding counties and never once felt too big.
@@robbybobbyhobbies we must have smaller lanes in the SW!
@@timgosling3076 Oh you do, for sure :). I wouldn't have taken my Golf down to Cornwall, let alone the Porsche! But I managed just fine through some tiny villages in North Yorkshire. You know, the kind with extremely unfriendly walls, cattle grids, random sheep and even more random walkers. The car's definitely bigger than the older ones, but it's still extremely nimble and compact, and visibility is excellent.
The holy grail ❤️🔥
That Silver-colored Porsche 993 GT2 sounds absolutely wonderful and it is a magnificent creation.
man those intakes on the wing are beautiful
A great review H, a slight shame this example was to "German dentist" spec with the comfort seats, airbags, electric windows & radio? The GT2 has solid rear subframe mounts and front control arms, which are even more severe than those fitted to the RS variant, hence enhanced steering responses.
This time it was a british dentist...😉
Well this is certainly an event. Thank you for your review. A singular and amazing machine indeed.

What a treat, one of my favourite cars, thanks for bringing this to us Harry.
This video took me all the way back to my air-cooled 911 Turbo. The sounds, the look of the interior, the seats, the dashboard, the quality of the craftsmanship, It’s been over 20 years and I can still feel it all right now. Unruly little hellion that it was, I can still remember how it felt lighting up that turbo on a twisty stretch of road near my home. What a magnificent machine that can leave you with such an impression for so long.

Fantastic content, it’s like reading original Evo magazine content but for my eyes. As car enthusiast content goes it just doesn’t get any better than Harry. Really enjoyed this video an absolute treat of a review 👍
What a phenomenal car and fantastic review. Cars like this will never be built again and its so nice to see these driven. Thanks for letting us live vicariously though you.
The 993 is so special. Wonderful video.
This brings back great memories of early 911 variants I drove and loved. To me, that size and shape were perfect, and that wonderful engine whine was all the music one needed. My dreams were filled with it. I especially loved the cars with fully manual steering. Once you learned the car, you developed a sense of knowing exactly what each tire and wheel were doing. You could sense when the oil reached operating temperature and the thermostat opened. Today, I’ve moved on to motorcycles for that visceral involvement in coaxing a beautifully designed and engineered mechanical wonder along my favorite roads.
Great video Harry, loved it 👌🏼

One of your best episodes, Harry. I watch for your knowledge of the cars, their history, the relationships, the characters and for your personal history with all of them. I watch for your enthusiasm - which you convey in part with wonderful language and further with a whole package of expressions and movement that say “I don’t know why, I just do!” Of course, watching your reaction in the driving segments should not be missed. My favorite episode is the 911 Turbo followed by your grandson saying it somewhat better than you on that day. Gotta jump into my 2013 Boxster S and make it sing. Thank you.
