In this video, courtesy of the Porsche Club of Great Britain (Region 2) I am driving one of the ultimate 911s - a 993 Turbo. The last of the air cooled cars, the 993 turbo was a bridge between the 993 and 996 - delivering modern performance but in a package that was still somewhat timeless. However, with values now on the rise and not looking back, is it that good?

I have been privileged here in South Africa. My friend in Pretoria had a yellow fully modified 993 it made 850hp on 1 bar boost. We came back from Kyalami after a Porsche track day and the power with the bigger turbos an straight pipes out of the turbos was orgasmic. It starter wheel spinning even at 120kmph until you changed to 4 gear and the slicks grip. It was very intimidating when it started up in the pits and the sound trumped every other one there. What a machine hands down the fastest car I've ever been in.

I’ve never forgotten visiting my Uncle in Madrid in the summer of 1998, I was 14 at the time and I’d always been a fan of cars. He took me up to Carlos Sainz’s indoor karting place just to have a nosy. As we arrived, there was a blue 993 Turbo parked up by the entrance door, side on, and it was the absolute most beautiful car I’d ever seen. I can still picture it now, 25 years later and I still really want one… best get up and get off to work and carry on saving!

Those rear seats and the lip provide the ideal platform to securely transport a rack mount server such as an Apple Xserve 😜 The space between the rear trim panel and the lip is about bang on 19”. When I used to use mine as a daily driver I would regularly turn up to data centres such as telehouse and carefully load or unload a server into the back. This is back when I picked the car up for the same as a new Golf (not even a GTi) and so I wasn’t as careful with it as I am these days. Still, it gets used and abused and not cosseted in cotton wool.

Drove a 993 Convertible back when it was 4 years old. It was the slowest in the range but the fastest car I've driven. I can't get my head around how much faster more modern ones are. The interior was basic but comfortable. Easy to drive and rode very well. Still to this day the best car I've ever driven.

Agree. For me from all 993 range the Carrera Cab or Coupé is the most agile. 4s are too heavy... And the Turbo I don't need because I drive my 993 Cab Varioram with G50 short gear only for fun

Back in the day (2003) I was fortunate enough to have a ride in a 993 Carrera RS. One owner from new who paid $165,000 AUD for it. By the time I had a ride in it, it had appreciated to $250,000 and I've no idea what it's worth now. Apparently it just sits under a cover in the garage now, and no longer used for tarmac rallies.

The 993 turbo s is in my opinion the finest that Porsche ever made. That’s why they’re £300000 to buy. The last of the air cooled turbo cars. However I would buy a mint low mileage 997 turbo for £70000, very nearly as nice but at a fraction of the price.

Always wanted one of these when I was a kid. Now it's typical classic car - about telling someone you have one rather than driving it.
That it's last of the shitty air cooled means it holds a premium.

Any lack of noise from the exhaust is more than made up for with that shirt... anything less wouldn't do justice to this beautiful classic, look forward to the next car/shirt video & the beautiful Scottish scenery

Good drive there sir. I've always liked that era of Porsche cars. I'd purchase a 996 Turbo instead. Are you or have you driven one?

Had one of those in 2005, even the same color. Cost more than the 996. One of the most fun 4WD cars I had but also very nervous once you got above about 210 kph. Passing a truck at that speed would cause the front end to sidestep a good half a meter. At around 270 kph it would again stabilize but it was quite a handful on German Autobahns. It had just 28k km and was fully Porsche Stuttgart inspected and serviced so there was nothing wrong with it. Best it could do was 303 kph read off the OBC. 100% stock.
Sure this is only relevant in Germany but compared to a RS6 it was not something you felt comfortable with at high speed. The Audi runs stable like a train, but then again weighs as much as one too. Had one of those too around the same time.
It was sort of a love hate relationship and I sold it rather quickly for a nice profit. The prices today are quite insane though. Back then I paid € 57.500. It's a nice car but not great IMHO.

If my memory serves me correctly, speaking of oil, this car has it's turbos in the rear wheel arches. Years back a colleague bought one with a (unknown to him) faked service history, had it trailered to his house, then took it to the sweet shop for it's first bimble. Whilst measuring out the bon-bons the shop assistant asked if the bubbles in the paint were for effect? Insurance company did the full investigation and surmised that congealed oil was to blame due to incorrect maintenance.

AFAIK all twin turbo 911s have the turbos in the arches which can lead to problems.
Such as - corrosion causing stuck wastegate actuators and shaft oil leaks.
