Looking good Harry. Actually this reminded me of an incident with my dad many years ago. He borrowed a friend's Silver Shadow in a rather conspicuous shade of yellow. Well, he got pulled by the police and being an Irishman in a Rolls in the 70s was not a good mix. I believe they suspected him of being some kind of IRA bigwig and put him in a cell overnight until his identity could be confirmed. His mate's never let him live it down and presented him with a corgi diecast mounted on a plinth which I still have to this day. 🙂

He said he grew up in poverty in Greece and they escaped to Australia. He saw a RR in William st Sydney and as a kid said “im going to work hard and buy one”.. well he became a developer and bought it. He said he cannot part with it as it symbolises everything he worked to achieve.

Harry, when you talk about the suspension and ride quality I have to mention something which is relevant from my teenage years. My Father worked for AP Lockheed in Liverpool which specialised in hydraulics. The company were working with Rolls Royce to develop suspension for the Shadow replacement, the Silver Spirit. The test car was a maroon Shadow, the boot being full of tanks and pumps etc for the new suspension- test mule spec. The ride was unbelievable but the car once parked would sit down which Rolls were not keen on. But the funny thing I remember was a solid oak boot stay to prop the boot lid up. It had been machined and sanded before being stained and varnished. It was almost as good as the interior wood! One last thing, the test car was without the radiator grill and Spirit of Ecstasy….. why? Because it was a mule was the official response! 😂 I enjoy your channel very much 🥂

The Shadow's chief designer (can't remember his name) was concerned about stability - he had a thing called the 'Sneeze Test' - ie if you sneeze and twitched the wheel, he wanted the car to still track straight - hence the dead feeling at the centre of the steering to pass the 'sneeze test'

So happy you are championing narrow cars. Manufacturers should be forced to reduce car width to keep traffic flowing and stop selfish drivers parking on pavements. If you reduce width you then force a reduction in height (to manage centre of gravity / handling issues) which leads to reduced kerb weights, better economy, reduced tyre wear etc.
    Narrow cars - it's the future! 😇

I like how you repaired the Rolls, but didn't try to "restore" it. Fixing what was in bad shape or unsafe, an improvement that doesn't distract from the car's nature, and keeping the things that make it the Arctic Rolls. Taking us for a drive to London, and showing off the car's still-impressive ride. And I always thought it was wider than it is; seeing it in a parking bay shows you how small it really is. I think Harry said that the purchase price was actually £4,100 (on e-bay). I totally agree with you that the car suits the old London streets. Reminds me of my parents shadow bought back in 1980.
It was a 1967 (TYK 22F) with air conditioning and a metal sliding sunroof (apparently a very rare and expensive option when new).
It had picnic tables on the back of the front seats and a 4 speed auto (later changed to a 3 speed with the larger 6.75 engine) from builds after1970ish.
I can confirm (because I had to do it) if you lock the boot lid, then ace the car key in the boot gutter rails d slam the boot closed, you have just locked yourself out of your car 😂
However,if you remove the spare wheel, you will find a hole in the boot floor (so your mechanic can check your spare tyre pressure without lowering the spare, assuming you lined up the valve with the hole) and it's big enough for a teenagers arm .
    So
Laying on my back, with a socket set and spanners,I found (after 3 hours) you can undo the boot catch from inside the boot, completely blindly and open the boot to retrieve the key 👍

We will get there but we really need to be focussed and working down a list of subjects driven by a true impact curve. We need to mobilise our efforts on the things that really need addressing not virtue signalling nonsense or tokenism. Coal fired energy, Heavy oil ships, haulage and air travel all need sorting before going vegan or avoiding leather or destroying perfectly good petrol cars for new electric ones.

I speak as an engineer Harry - we are trying - hydrogen for combustion and synthetic fuels are the sustainable future - why throw away 100+ years of engine development when the issue isn’t the engine, it’s the fuel! Love the shadow, our early ‘81 Silver Spirit is much the same in terms of drive and feel - enjoy every drive (when we get chance!)

    • @andrewjones-productions

Quote; "..the issue isn't the engine, it's the fuel!". I've never thought about it that way and you are absolutely right of course. An excellent point of view, put in a very sensible way.

    • @autobootpiloot
      @autobootpiloot Před 2 lety +2

No, it is the engine. Why waste hydrogen by burning it in a engine with low efficiency and some bad emissions (burning never will be completely clean) when we can further develop a fuelcell for mass production.
A combination engine will never have the efficiency of a battery or a fuelcell type technology.

A friend of mine has a 68 Silver Shadow, I have borrowed it a number of times, and it truly is a spectacular car to drive. No vibration at all from the engine, and you can’t hear it idle when you’re inside. The driving experience can best be described as «wafting» rather than driving, and in 1968-70 it must have been stupendously superior to all other cars of that time, except maybe the Citroën DS, which another friend of mine has, incidentally. I love driving the Shadow! It does equal most modern cars, in my opinion.

  • @steamwally

I've always thought a Rolls was a bit too ostentatious, but having worked on some of Rolls - Royce's finest products, I have come to appreciate the outstanding engineering that makes them so special. Splendid car, ably demonstrated.

What a wonderful car. All my favorites in Harry's collection, past and present, are relatively affordable old things (in no particular order):
    Lotus Elan
    Jaguar XJ12 Coupe
    Rolls Royce Silver Shadow
Alfa Romeo Spider (Shame! Shame on Harry for selling this one!)
    [Surely I'm forgetting others]
Now, if I lived in Germany, to some extent my priorities would shift toward more modern performance. The Autobahn, you know. Barring that, all of my choices have 'adequate' performance. But that's just me, and I am old...

This was beautiful and thank you for sharing the reason why it's white... My first was an 82 Spirit (you can all groan is you want, I LOVED it) that was in Georgian Silver with Gray hides piped Black, for a very similar reason... I also lovingly restored her, maybe a misguided adventure I took at the time however it was something I felt I "needed" to do. Well, 1 1/2 years and $50,000 USD latter, she was complete & better than new, and I was off my rocker and on to my next Rolls! It's an addiction.

Brings back lots of memories. My late Uncles first Rolls was a Shadow one the same age as yours. His was in Garnet with dove grey leather interior. That along with the Saab 99 Turbo and vintage Lagonda that he owned at the same time were the cars I learned to drive in! His Rolls was originally sold by Jack Barclay and had the Barclay sill plates. I always loved the early Cornich as well and remember loving the two they used on To The Manor Born. One was chocolate brown and later a black one. Wonder what happened to those.

Great stuff Harry, as ever. Particularly chuffed that you gave Mr Tyson a nod - my beloved Granddad (a well-known joiner in the area), was a site foreman for Mr Tyson in the 50's/60's. It was a 'feather in the cap' to work for Tyson's. A man, my granddad used to say, who would check sites most days to see that nails were't thrown away, but counted! Counting nails...but the quality of his building work was exquisite. Better than today's breeze-block/weetabix construction.
