- The gearbox on my Lamborghini Countach 5000 QV has recently got very noisy, so I took it to Iain Tyrrell's workshop to see what can be done to fix it.

That whole drive, I'll bet Iain was thinking "we really shouldn't be driving this at all"!
When he gets on it at 7:20 was so painful to watch...
Harry: "It's always had that singing."
Lian: "....Yeah."
*Up Shift*
Harry: "That one."
*Lian groans and grits his teeth*
I was thinking it myself! Please turn around and nurse it back i kept saying to myself but good ol' Harry, just keeps giving it a boot full 🤪
I'm STUNNED Harry didn't know that the noise he 'likes' is the horrendous noise he wants rectified just at higher speeds🤣 Ian: 'It's the same noise actually'.
@@realMaverickBuckley Totally! My 2010 Audi makes a noise and I'm on it. I can't imagine having something that expensive and not paying attention to every noise. "we just wrapped it up so we wouldn't hear the noise"
Makes you think that Harry is not exactly the most bright guy and definitely has no engineeering knowledge. I gather that his wealth was handed down from mummy and daddy but is in denial.
I would pay for a show with you two, even once a month or periodically. Just like this; unscripted, no agenda, no producers. Just test driving cars, examining them in the shop, and maybe the occasional road trip.
An intelligent version of top gear
British Jay Leno's Garage?
A really high class version of hoovies garage
Excellent idea.
@@ElliHarper What on earth has ‘woke’ got to do with it?
„I‘ve had 12 years of that just getting louder…“
Harry, I deeply admire your degree of relaxation when it comes about expensive noises in precious automobiles. Hats off!
Harry saying in a dead pan voice: "that's going to be pricey, isn't it?" says he's already accepted that he has to shell out a lot of pounds to get that gearbox fixed. And it doesn't seem to faze him at all.
@@tjroelsma expense doesn't worry you when you are minted. ;)
@@1968spikey Not necessarily: I've seen a lot of guys who'll happily shell out a lot of money to drive a really expensive car but either can't or won't afford proper maintenance.
Harry is obviously a serious petrol head and a collector and he knows what having and maintaining a fleet of cars means.
@@tjroelsma but in this instance ance Harry can easily be classed as "rather wealthy" which does make all the difference. Most of the car e enthusiasts I know would dread a bill that was into 4 figures plus and it could easily spoil the fun of owning their chosen/dream car.
@@1968spikey Yes, but then those people's expectations weren't really based in reality.
If you have to scrape together all your money to buy the cheapest and most trashed version of your dream car, then you'd have to expect having to shell out major money to get that car right again.
But the same also goes for buying a decent high end sportscar: buying such a car is only the first step. Insurance and maintenance are two of the largest money pits with many a dream car, something a lot of people seem to ignore. If you manage to buy a high end Porsche, or a Lamborghini, Ferrari etc., maintenance will be very expensive. This is the reason many of these cars get sold at a certain age if the previous owner actually drove them regularly.
Harry is a petrol head and obviously a fairly wealthy one. So he probably won't blink too much if the repair bill for this Countach ends up being say 20,000 pounds, because he already knows it might reach that figure even before he brought it in. Repairs on older supercars are by definition very expensive and a gearbox rebuild on this car is a very time-consuming repair.
This was hilarious Harry. Iain's grimace as you hurled it down the road was a picture....he was actually shrinking down into the seat - clearly expecting the gearbox to grenade at any moment, whilst you bravely told him how many miles you have done in the car whilst listening to that racket!
He had heard enough in the first 100 yards to want to hi-tail it back to the workshop.
This will be a very interesting repair.
This could turn out to be an interesting video series. I'm glad I'm not paying the bill though!
"This will be a very interesting repair". That's also an understatement. Simon Kidston uses the expression : "open wallet surgery".
The banter between you two is epic. Couple proper car guys loving the moment. Please share the screen more often.
My favorite car "guys" and... a Countach ! Life is good ! 😊
Iain: "not a moment too soon." Iain is the master of understatement when it comes to consoling his clients. The mystery deepens in "The Case of the Chattering Gearbox."
lol
That's polite English for '12 months too late!'
@@FFM0594 In this case 12 years!
That's English for:
"It's totally f*****g f****d, mate. Big time."
6:07 That diagnosis just from the sound of it was 100% correct. That's exactly what the issue was. Very skilled mechanic. He knows his business very well.
This must be THE FUNNIEST Harry's Garage episode I've seen! I was truly LMAO when you casually described what you've been living with in this car... while revving it up even higher and poor Ian cringing at the awful noise but also laughing about your casual attitude. Wonderful to see
Christ. When Iain says “I don’t like the sound of that AT ALL” I can hear MY wallet emptying!…
😂
Ha ha.. 100% agree
Yet Harry just puts the boot in again! Hahaha what a guy.
Especially right after he said "That's a very unusual noise in a Countach" - right up there with a doctor saying "Well I've never seen that before"!
Brown trousers time more like.
Can’t believe Harry’s more concerned about the stone chips when the gearbox sounds like a bag of spanner’s 😂
That is what happens when you have too much money
@@ronmccullock1407 or maybe "just enough "?
The noise goes away when the car isn't moving, but you can see the stone chips all the time.
Because Harry is no engineer for sure.
@@chrisva505 Harry is a show off! Gentlemen Farmer
Am I the only one who could listen to Harry and Iain talk about cars for hours? A podcast would be a godsend for us car lovers.
Scott is spot on. Seeing the two of you on a road trip together would be a riot to watch. Please consider it.
Ha! That'd be superb!
Harry saying ‘I’m glad it’s only a little bit of swarf’
Ian thinking ‘Everything inside is fucked’
LOL!!!!
Totally 😂
Made me laf that well done 🤣
Oh my. I thought Iain looked a little hesitant to get in the car, wan't sure why until i heard it.
I found myself screaming at the screen for Harry to stop around 7:30. The look on Iain's face is that of sheer terror. I thought the box was going to explode right there, I think Iain did as well. Can't wait to see the "upgrades" Harry has done on this one. Excellent as always, and thanks for all the videos!
Yeah you are being hyperbolic.
@@johnsmith1474 Of course, this is the internet, but I genuinely think Iain didn't want to drive the car again. He visibly cringed every time Harry gave it any power.
@@paristrout8469 Exactly. Tell me my gearbox is about to blow up without telling me my gearbox is about to blow up - "Oooh I really don't like that". I can't believe Harry said it has made that noise since he had it!!!
@@johnsmith1474 hyperbaric 😊
I shouldn't have, but I laughed when Iain put his hands over his face. Poor Lambo! At least we know Iain will set it right.
I dont think Ive ever seen a Countach engine coming out in the past 14 years of me watching youtube. Love to see that!
This is one of the best videos I’ve seen in ages. Iain’s understatement whilst trying to gently convey the sense of urgency of the catastrophic failure that he fears is about to take place is absolutely priceless. The state of that gearbox oil is testament to the prudence of keeping the fluids fresh. Everyone worries about the engine oil but so many ignore the ‘box oil which endures a much tougher life. Harry’s boundless optimism in the face of the compelling evidence that the gearbox is about to lunch itself is great. Particularly enjoyed Iain questioning if the drain hole would be large enough to let all the shrapnel out. I think we are about the see, in all its glory, the reason that you need deep pockets to run these old, expensive and exotic cars. Good luck with it. Great viewing.
If I had a classic Lamborghini, or any old classic for that matter, then Iain is the man I'd trust implicitly to look after it.
Just hand him a blank cheque.....
I'll be honest, if that was mine, I wouldn't have moved it a single centimetre until I knew what was wrong with it! 😬
*Twelve* years! 😆
I'm pretty sure the reason it hasn't been driven for a few years is the gear box issue, and if Ian can fix it right away this has been in the cards for a while. Harry clearly knows exactly what's wrong with it.
He's probably only driven it for short journeys a handful of times since he acquired the car.
Edit: over 18,000 kilometres, oh well 😂
Must be all those years driving farm machinery.
Great video with my two favourite car guys. Looking forward to the updates
What a hoot to see two of my favorite UK automotive professionals together, too cool. Can you imagine the automotive knowledge here in this one video.
I've never seen Iain look so worried as when that noise kicked in.
Harry - That's going to be a big bill, but I'm sure Iain will sort it.
Iains face when harry told him how long the noise has been going on 😂
Tyrell had already tested the car. There is some theatre here.
@@steveastin2684 I would have refused to work on it at that point..
good grief
@@JETJOOBOY It's not like Iain's working on it for free.
Big bill to you, chump change for Harry.......
Mr T was rather like a doctor gently trying to break the news to his cheery patient that aspirin won't fix that nagging pain. He clearly wanted that car back in the workshop within seconds of the first gear change, love the way you just carried on driving! Looking forward to the resto journey.
I don’t understand why they didn’t just stop and go straight back to the garage. Instead they drove it even further, whilst wincing at the horrendous noises
@@salvi1398 I don't think a few extra miles of driving was going to make it any worse 😁
@@salvi1398 Iain clearly wanted to but I think he knows Harry well enough, and knows he'd have just said 'Oh well that's just the same sounds it's always made, just a little louder.' Harry was in pretty big denial the entire video, celebrating to chunks coming out the drain plug. They probably couldn't fit!
Best intro ever. The sound this bull does is astonishing!
The best thing is that we'll be able to follow this on both Iain and Harry's channels.
That is a truly horrid noise for an engineer to endure.
Iain is politely, effectively saying "STOP!!!" as Harry puts up the repair bill...
Best part is when Harry claims he'll try to go easy on the way back to the shop, then proceeds to run through the gears like he's in a rally.
Harry does not listen !!!! no way would I have driven that
Tyrells commentary, translated:
"Harry, much as though I have no problems with you adding 30% to the repair bill by blowing the guts of the box out of the arse of the car, I do rather think it'd be best if you didn't rag the absolute shit out of a clearly shagged gearbox"
@@Beany2007FTW hbahahaha. Indeed. all of the above! Stoooopp, in the name of God!"
@@matthewhackett1710 I fully expect Harry and Ian had discussed the 'worst case scenario' cost beforehand, so had Harry destroyed the box on the test run, he knew the outcome.
Also, where better to destroy a gearbox than within a couple of miles of one of the better reputed classic lambo specialists in the country? :)
Jesus Harry, I can't believe you've been driving around in that Countach with it sounding like that! Yikes! Great video though, really interested to see the engine and gearbox coming out and being investigated.
As a builder of these exotics, I have no doubt there is a special angel protecting you from both an unscheduled rapid disassembly during that test drive, and Tyrrell's tolerance for abuse.
Iain’s terrified while Harry’s not too bothered, he will write the repair off against his CZcams business. Furthermore, he has enjoyed the car for the past 12 years with only minor service and expense and it has appreciated significantly over that time. Way to go Harry!
Well that's excellent news, no big metal lumps. Probably only 30k not 50! The look on Iains face when driving was priceless. A man with real mechanical sympathy cringing at the gearbox noises thinking 'I think we should get a tow back to avoid further damage'
I love Ian’s mechanical sympathy/dismay here while Harry is very comfortable with the noise as it’s been making it for years.
It’s moments like this when the ownership of Italian V12s is best experienced vicariously.
British cars are in a league of their own too 🤣
Sounds expensive, Harry, hope you have a good year on the farm to help.
I was thinking the drive back, Iain’s just laughing because each time he hears that sound, it’s basically a pence in his pocket
Presumably on a car like this, the cost is matched by the increase in value of the car so sort of pays for itself…
@@jimtaylor431 Countach values have nearly doubled in last 2 years. Worth north of 500k now.
Get your tongue out of Harry’s arse.
@@photosphotos not a good day
Makes a Lambo sound like a Lada. Ian's facial expressions are priceless.
I thought it was the Lambo tractor.
It just goes to show where some would limp back to the work shop, others just soldier on because it’s always sounded like this, just gotten louder. Brilliant stuff.
A LOVE WATCHING MY TWO FAVORITE AUTOMOTIVE GODS, CRUISING IN A COUNTACH WITH SMILES FROM EAR TO EAR.... FANTASTIC HARRY!!! 😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀
Ian’s face when Harry tells him it’s been making that noise for 12 years. 😳😳
I can't believe he has driven it for 12 years sounding like that, maybe if it was a £500 snotter but a Countach?!
😂😂😂
That was funny
They all do that, Sir.
@@TheDoosh79 my £500 snotter gets treated better than Harry's Countach.
Harry bringing his cars to Iain brought me to his channel that has turned into one of my favorite channels to watch, thanks Harry
This Countach, is the car, in the color that hung on my wall and will always occupy that space in my heart. Just beautiful! Iain Tyrrell is the exotic whisperer. Couldn't be in better hands obviously. Eagerly awaiting the content that follows.
What a joy to watch. Thank you Harry and Ian.
That's the first time I've suspected Harry of not having perfect mechanical sympathy. The Saab story kind of put me straight 😄
At least he does prove his point about the countach being quite a solidly built thing!
It is piss poor really. The car deserves the best care and should have had it a few years back.
@@jamesrobert4106 it’s all fixable. His other cars needed attention before this.
@@Lou-f He has done close to 11000 miles with that noise!!!

7:40... Iain is politely trying to say... 'It might be a good idea if you stop and turn around now, before it all goes horribly wrong'!
For a motoring journalist Harry's mechanical naivety is astounding. I'd have turned around again at the gatehouse and pushed it back.
Zero mechanical sympathy! Holy mother of God just stop driving it Harry!
Love Harry but..
He took it there for the axial noise but 'wanted to keep the singing noise'.
It's clearly the same noise just at higher speed/ revs. Crikey I was wincing.
But he sure knows how to create content! Look at all of us talking about it! Just awesome.

Thank god for people like him who still look after all these beautiful cars.
"Looking after?" Um.....
The dream team again! I love watching Harry and Iain together😀
Ouch. That really sounds like metal flakes being produced... running a transmission that sounds like that tends to make repairs go from ££ to £££££.
Iain's grin was getting bigger and bigger the longer Harry drove it!
@@RDFB101 I think Iain's luxury holiday funds for 2022 are in the bag off the back of this job! lol :)
I'm am still thankful and feel privileged that both you, Harry, and lian share with me and countless others that had posters of that magnificent fantasy we could hang on our bedroom wall. I even made sure the push pins matched and used the shoulder to hold it up as to not puncture the poster itself. Spell checked again.
So good to see three legends together in one video. Brilliant content. Thanks guys.!
I’d go so far and have a professional film & photo crew document the whole process. It’d probably make for a very sought-after film and book in the future when mechanic repairs of such extend and complexity become more and more rare. Plus it’s simply an homage to the outstanding construction and car design.

Iain's face was a picture. How he restrained himself from shouting at you Harry to stop is a miracle. That sounds really nasty and expensive and I have to say that I would have thought you would have had it investigated a long time before. 1600 miles on fresh oil? They may have topped it up but I doubt it had a full oil change!!

I know it's going to hurt your wallet big time, but I am delighted that we're going to see another project with Iain. The two of you are a delight to watch.
Watching Iain's face during the test-drive was priceless. :D I'm also loving all the comments saying how the car should have been nursed back to the garage there and then. It's been making that noise for at least TWENTY THOUSAND KM, (maybe miles - I didn't pay that much attention to the units) albeit it less and less quietly, one more hard drive is going to make naff all difference to the outcome. It's going to need a full gearbox rebuild as it already stands. Throwing that amount of grinding paste around is going to abraded if not completely eroded the case hardening on the gearwheels, worn the synchros and any of the rotating interfaces. May as well go for it one last time before overhaul.
Harry, this is going to be a great journey to watch. Looking forward to future chapters already.
You two gents need to do more vids together. So entertaining, informative and well presented. Best on CZcams 👍🏻
Cannot wait to watch the coming series of videos as you fix the Bull. Exactly the kind of content I'm excited about.

I wish yours and Iain's view paid enough for the rebuilds... then we could enjoy getting the entire shop garage done :)
That noise could still be a bearing, I have heard that noise before and it can be a section of bearing shell that has disintegrated, so when you load the gear shafts with throttle the bearing rollers push harder into the the bearing shell and make a noise as they drop into the missing part of the shell.
Yep, I reckon it will be an output shaft bearing. The noise is present in all the gears. I can't understand why Harry ignored it for so long, but I guess he does have a reasonable selection of alternatives.....
How would this explain the very unclean oil fluid? Looked like there is tons of material in it...
@Marcel B.
Yeah that's more than just a bearing, that's a lot of swarf.
I’m looking forward to seeing this journey!
