Countach Countach! Disassembly begins on Harry's as a US version lands | Tyrrell's Classic Workshop

- This week we're seeing double as the workshop is graced by the presence of two stunning Lamborghini Countach examples! Many viewers will already be familiar with the first, owned by Harry Metcalfe of Harry's Garage, which arrived last week with a rather noisy gearbox. The work involved was touched on in Harry's video (watch here - • My Lamborghini Countac... ) and Iain goes into more detail on the Countach drivetrain and why it will be quite the task to access that gearbox! With disassembly having started in preparation, it's the perfect opportunity for Iain to showcase a couple of the factory exhaust options available for the Countach.
The second muse arrived on the day of filming after a long voyage from the States. Iain explains some of the differences between the US and Rest-of-World examples such as extra bumpers/spoilers and a different fueling system with injection instead of carbs. The aim is to start that lovely V12 up to see how she's singing, but the car has other ideas...
A rather awful spell of British weather meant we had to stay in the safe confines of the workshop for this episode.
00:00 - Introduction with Harry's Countach
01:02 - The Countach powertrain
03:30 - Factory exhaust options
05:27 - Introducing the US-spec Countach
07:38 - Starting troubles
14:48 - Outro
Thank you once again to everyone for the overwhelming reception of these videos and for all the support of likes, subscribes and wonderful comments.

Very glad Harry influenced your decision to start a CZcams channel. Real quality.
Agree!
Oh yes, certainly 😃👌
I've been following this channel on and off since that espada rebuild. Thanks for nudging him into it, and thanks to you Mr Tyrell for sharing your passion for these cars!
That was well worth a peep, interesting to see the vast array of classics in your workshop.
Rich boys Toys. and thankfully in glorious 4K as well.
Agreed. Great coherent speaking style... can listen to this guy for a whole 20minutes...
From an engineer, fair play to you for putting up a whole video where you chased around looking for a problem, tried lots of stuff but didn't get it sorted. This is the reality of the job sometimes, thanks for not prettying it up in the editing suite. Keep up the great work!
As one also, you've really got to shrug about how badly designed and built most of these cars were back then.
They put all their efforts into making them look pretty, and have big powerful engines, but by god - what kind of moron puts an open vent right about an electrical relay box?
@@dons1932 To Your last question: Italians.
A couple of decades with Laverdas, Ducatis (the old ones, Hailwood and before) Guzzis, Alfas, and Lancias taught me there ain't anything You should not expect.
Also sad that this car sat so long without being driven - it'll ruin any car eventually, they need to get out on the road once in a while. I guess it was probably part of a collection of some kind and the owner or manager of the collection didn't care or understand that or was just terrified of adding miles. Compare Harry's car, which is driven regularly and is reliable enough he was happy to take it on a trip to Europe.
Fault finding electrics can take forever !!
@@thetessellater9163 Especially Italian wiring!
Thank you to Harry' garage to permit me to discover your youtube channel. I realy love it. Your english, like Harry, is quite easy to understand for a non native english person. I shared with some friends in Luxembourg 😀
It’s a real pleasure and privilege, to see people imbued with mechanical sympathy and knowledge at work. Quite fascinating viewing
«Sorry there was no road test in this one.» Mr Tyrrell, there is no need to apologise. I can watch you tinker with and talk about cars for hours. This channel is automotive gold!
I must say, that Countach looks absolutely stunning in black
I never grow tired off seeing Countach.. even if they are not on the road but in a garage being worked on ^_^
The look on his face when the crimp connector came off with the electrical tape had me howling with laughter!
We are very lucky to have such artisan skills being shown in Tyrells garage. Real and honest work being done on very rare Bespoke cars.
I love how polite and nice everyone is and how respectfull the old cars are treated.
This guy looks like a classic car butler more than a mechanic. He ushers the cars back to life.
Alright Iain. Your face when Harry was giving it the beans with the gearbox noise🤒
Funny that. Proper gentleman but you can tell he was begging to say “ stop f:;ck*ng driving it “
@@lightningleaf23 Ian was thinking, each gear shift will cost you 2000 pounds on the bill
@@bcarter9252 😀...at least....
Very surprised that Harry didn't tackle this problem earlier.
@@JustMe-bx8gu Harry doesn't seem to have much mechanical sympathy...
Tyrrell, I think you have a better handle on how much you Audience wants 'road tests'but for me, I don't care at all. Watching you and your crew work on this beast today was fantastic!
Fault finding is a vanishing ability, you obviously thrive on it. Thank you so much for passing on your knowledge
It's hard to imagine how anyone can enjoy owning a car like this when the complexity is such that only a few people in the country have the skills to chase down the inevitable problems they are plagued with. Can't wait to see the engine and gearbox of Harry's car get extricated.
Harry 100% got it right with getting you on here. THIS is what CZcams was made for. Bespoke, PROPER content.
Love the 'Ice Station Zabra' reference... that brings back memories and immediately sets the expectation. 👍
I have to admit that Harry's red wide body with gold wheels and no wing Countach is one of the best specs. That black one is gorgeous too but IMO the Countach looks so good without a wing.
I actually prefer the Countach with a wing, each to their own.
Otherwise i'd just get a Lamborghini Diablo, which is another gorgeous car.
Finally we have a video that gives us a peek at the somewhat more frustrating side of auto repair.
Iain Tyrell, a genuine old school engineer.
And fascinating to listen to.
Definitely one of the best channels on CZcams right now. Grown up stuff for grown up people.
Don't ever apologise for lack of road testing. You are putting out the best car channel content on CZcams.
Greetings from down the road in Winsford. 🖐
Another rare chance to see these unique cars & experts at work!
(Am I in a minority who remembers Ice Station Zebra?)
Haha, I was thinking the same thing about the movie reference too. I actually watched it again not too long ago…on VHS tape!
No, saw it in the Cinema when it was new, Howard Hughes was obsessed with it and watched endlessly!
Now in HD looks great
@@stevefuller1779 ah,at least a couple of us left
And in contrast - Ice Cold at Alex.
Yes, very glad you decided to do the channel. In Australia, I can remember seeing this on The Clive James show, they had a brand of easy start. I could do with this stuff for my 70s Alfa Romeo that is refusing to start. Brand name….’Start Ya Bastard’ 😂😂
What an Aladdin’s cave of legendary classic cars. Even a Lambo Silhouette in the background…!
Forgetting the wonderful car content, this video deserves a like for the Ice Station Zebra reference! Thanks Iain and team.,
Me thinking there, maybe not so familiar for the young people.
NOW THESE HANDS ON, COMMENTATED VIDEO'S ARE JUST THE BEST MR TYRRELL. 😃😃😃 KIND REGARDS BEN FROM NZ
You are so natural in front of the camera, it's like you have done it for decades. Great content and delivery. Love the channel.
I could listen to iain talk all day. His knowledge is incredible
Shows like this deserve government grants.
I love that Black countach everything, but the silly bit over the lights and the crap injection, those gold wheels really make it pop to! Amazing video as always
Looking forward to seeing Harrys Counatch' s engine out
The amazing thing with all of Iain’s videos is the solid engineering basics which seem to form the basis of his and his team’s work. No diagnostic laptops, no OBD2 readers. Just good, old school identify the symptoms and work the problem engineering. Clearly there is a wealth of experience built up over many years but I bet most of his guys are using the skills learned via a traditional apprenticeship. To witness the development of young guys in that environment is wonderful to see. Great stuff.
Also hard to find the diagnostic tool connection.
The takeaway from this video is that these magnificent cars are in good hands and will return to their former glory in due course. Interesting as always.
I absolutely love this channel ! Not only is the technical behind-the-scenes content fascinating; I always feel noticeably relaxed and centered after viewing one of your posts. Thank you, and, as always I'm Looking forward to your next video.
Ian, the spanner videos are just as entertaining as the road test videos.
Very glad Harry got you started Mr Tyrrell. Looking at the cars you've got in the shop I'll be spending some time with you you Sir!
Thanks to all at Tyrrell's for invaluable learning once again. It's so interesting to see these cars up closer than in the books. The location of the relays.... Seems highly sensible. Great work, Sant' Agata...!
I had to look that up 😊
Iian- anything you put out is fascinating; doesn't have to have a road test- it's the journey to get to that point. Brilliant stuff. Cheers
I have very ,little mechanical knowledge ,but I could listen to Ian all day talking about those classic cars would love to come and visit one day, keep up the informative videos 👍🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Iain, some of the best stuff on the tube right now. My buddies and I always watch when a new one comes out. Thanks as always, and I love Harry's garage as well. Always great to see him bring something in. Best.
Don't need a road test every time, I found this very interesting n will be watching to see how the Countach works out. Can't wait to see the drive-train removed from Harry's car.
This channel is like the equivalent pint of Guinness out of a Dublin bar. Consistent quality, and very much looking forward to the next.
I love watching the fact your actually showing the process of troubling shooting the repair, AWESOME!!!!!!!!!! Show MORE
For us that will never be able to afford one of type of cars is cool to watch
Iain, thank you so much for your videos. It is always a pleasure to watch and listen to you. It is very hard nowadays to find an expert who has got expertise and enthusiasm and is able to share both in such an easy way. Thank you so much. I can hardly wait for the next episode.
Tyrrell is an absolute gentleman, thank you for blessing us with your unending Lambo knowledge
Thank you for starting your channel. Your garage is like a car show every time I see it. I have enjoyed many many of your videos
Icestation Zebra... Now there's a blast from the past. I read those books when I was a kid in the 80's 😍Alistair McLean was awesome !
Happy that this channel popped up in my notifications.
Black countach with the gold wheels is absolutely gorgeous 😍
This is the best kind of CZcams content, subscribed
So goes the story that lay up is pay up unless things get properly de commissioned before long term storage issues like this are caused,, motorcycles though not as big do happen to get issues like this also,, from Northern Ireland great video,,, ☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️
I can't help but be slack-jawed everything I see a Countach, and wonder at the sheer majesty that is the width of those rear tyres!!!!!
love the videos in the workshop. dont need the test drives everytime
I love how Mr Tyrrell channels his inner Kenneth Williams when things look difficult.
Such a treat to begin my day with a cup of coffee and a Countach!
I would love to meet the shade-tree mechanic that was trusted to do the electrical work on this car!!
Bodge crimp connectors and Iain's face when he was holding the black tape like it was a piece of necrotic flesh almost made me spill my coffee!
That wind noise was quite dramatic, I'm just glad your workshop seems to be built well. Brilliant video as always!
It's really all been said many times before. Entertaining, educational, mesmerising, and topped off by Iain's wonderful tones and explanations. Simply the best. Cheers, Bob
That black Countach is bloody incredible!
No need for apologies this was a master class of info on a legendary Lamborghini!!
These two machines are going to deliver some fun for all.. Can't wait
What stunning design, where on earth did the influence for this come from? Watching this work going on is a real geek treat. Thanks and long may the channel continue.
Another fantastic video. I could happily watch these for hours. Please keep them coming!
That Ice Station Zebra reference is so timely for me as I just listened to that on audiobook recently. Great book.
Thanks for the honest presentation of what it takes to troubleshoot a non-start condition with a car, especially when access to a wiring diagram is not feasible. Keep up the good work, and do let us know on which “lunchtime” the car will be sorted.
11:36 “but fortunately, when it was in the States, they’ve invented these quick release countach grill” 🤣
Love the serious face while saying this. 😁
Me thinks: quick eject grills which wont stay put ie on the car while doing 220 km/h !
@@TheStefanskoglund1
That’s the automatic release function.
I could watch these gents all day, fascinating 👍
Looking at the iron in that garage, Mr. Tyrrell has built himself one hell of an operation.
Thank you Iain and the team, for takin the time to show us what makes up a countach (or 2) 👍
This channel is quite simply brilliant. Never ever disappoints.
Tyrrell,Harry,an Jay have the best car content on youtube!!!
I wonder how many viewers understood your remark "Ice Station Zebra" and thanks for mentioning those incredible scenes from the movie "Rain Man," thank God they chose those the Countach.
Iain! I was delighted when you started this channel (I had watched Harry's videos featuring you and your workshop) but my favorite parts are the greasy bits:). Your test drives are insightful and welcome but I truly love learning about all the esoteria involved with the tuning and repair of these older exotic and rare cars. In short- keep it up and please don't neglect the filthy details! Thanks!
The sheer size of those rear tyres are still iconic.
Thank You Iain again for a great video! These just keep getting better and better!. I am amazed by the quality and rarity of vehicles You get to work on and that inspires me to work on my own little fleet of cars( Maserati 222 SE/ Maserati Quattroporte IV / Jaguar XJR 308).....The workshop You have is amazing and it seems that everyone working with You is a true professional and knows exactly what he/she is doing. The atmosphere seems to be busy but relaxed.....
Keep the videos coming and don't loose that humour of Yours! It is the reason why I consider these to be among the very best!
I am from Oklahoma and loved the exotic sports cars. Unfortunately not many of those in my part of the USA. I love how detailed you get on each show gives people like me the chance to see the good the bad and the ugly of these cars
It’s the juxtaposition of super rare super valuable exotica and real life dodgy electrics, oil leaks and the rest which make Iain’s channel so fascinating. Love it!
It’s amazing that the Countach looks as good today as it did when it was first sold. Great stuff Iain!
It does still look insane. I prefer the first generation cars though. The design is more pure and interesting without the flares, side skirts, wings, etc.
Those Countach's even look good underneath. My favourite 15 minutes so far today
I'm a simple man....I see a Tyrell's workshop video notification and I click play.
Thanks for posting, Iain.
I owned 2 US spec Countachs in the past, QV and Anniversary. Both of them had same problem not starting the engine even though starter motor seems working. But after numerous work hours, the solution was quite simple, just replacing to the new starter motor. When the starter motor was new, It spined a lot faster and that V12 with injection syestem needed that.
First time I've had the chance to see the underside of a Countach. Fascinating stuff, especially the rear suspension.
Got here a couple of years ago through Harry's channel, I've joined the fandom because of the type and quality of the material produced.
I did not realised I will get emotionally involved though with this particular car. When Harry showed us the issue with this gearbox, it brought to light issue of what happens to us all as we age. I am glad that it is on the mend.
No need to apologise for no road test Iain, I'm just forever grateful you share your knowledge and passion with us!
Oh my dear ,Iain .
This is an very challenging work ,to fiddle and fix with the poor wiring "work" other´s have done to a vehicle .
Being a car electrician i know exacly what Pete is going thru.
No or even wrong wiring diagram´s are also making the job not only more money but also much more nerve "consuming" !
I wish Pete and your whole employes patience with this project .
But i am very confident that the team will solve the problem´s.
Thank you for sharing Iain and the Tyrell ream. These videos are like little gems. Love the humor Iain at the beginning when talking about the test drive with Harry. What beautiful machines these cars are!
Nice to have a more in depth technical content.
That silver blue Islero in the background for the win!!!!!!!
I first saw you when Harry was driving the car to demonstrate the gearbox noise. Your face was a picture of engineering pain 😊. Could almost hear you crying "stop, oh for Gods sake stop" Subscribed👍
Head and shoulders the best car videos on the internet. I would pay you to allow me to work there as tea-boy and sweeper up.
Man….
Anyone else wish we could see an outdoor shot of that wind storm? Crikey!!! 🌬 😮
Very probably the absolute best videos on CZcams. Thanks.
Appreciate the diagnosis videos! Can't wait to see the inside of the gearbox from Harry's Countach.
Mr Tyrrell is a legend, I actually want to buy a vintage car just for him to fix! Heck I would let him remove my appendix even! Living legend!!
Great video! I am nowhere near being able to afford any car but the cheapest. However, I can totally enjoy watching people that come across as fine gentlemen drive and work on these childhood dreams.
Thanks, that's the first time I've clearly understood how the drivetrain is laid out on the Countach, great to see that. Seems a pretty nice compact arrangement, and at least it's only the driveshaft under the engine, rather than the whole gearbox!
Love this more complete step by step video and hope you can do a full start to finish on this cars, covering all the main jobs you do on them.
Thank you for your time!!
Ian and Harry are the best thing on the internet!
Superb, and very educational, even for those of us who struggle with changing windshield wipers.
I'm drooling at the anticipation of these two 80's Era raging bulls getting restored to perfect working order....And getting to watch said restoration process unfold. What a fantastic few weeks we are in store for....
Absolutely fantastic content great attention to details 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
