Lamborghini Countach QV update. Extracting the engine & gearbox at Iain Tyrrell Classics

- My Lamborghini Countach QV is at Iain Tyrrell Classics because the gearbox needs attention and the only way to see what's wrong is to remove both the engine & gearbox from the car. It's a big job and you've never seen an engine hoist as big as this one!

Can we all give the technicians a round of applause. Taking that lump out with the boss and the customer stood very close by
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Excellent job gents
An old car is easy to work on try working on a modern car lol
@@markwilliams5654 If you watch Salvage Rebuilds you will see how easy they rip the front off most cars and just lift the engine/box out the front! That Countach didn't make it easy to get the engine out, nothing came apart to aid access?
@@markwilliams5654 the point was with the boss and customer watching..... err lol
That guy under the car has bigger cojones than I will ever have.
And CZcams land watching. Respect.
Updating your Countach in the mechanics while driving a Chiron Pur Sport. Harry is once again proving why he is the best among automotive content creators in youtube.
Todays "L J K Setright"
Can wait to see that video.
@@jeffreyrwilliams9345 Almost a polar opposite, if you ask me, but equally as entertaining. Fans of this channel are birds of a feather!
@@jeffreyrwilliams9345 OH YES.
Yeah, I like they way Ǝ B was hidden until just before destination. Brilliant masquerade.
Arriving in a Chiron to see your Countach. Life's good in Harry'sgarageland.
Another awesome video to kickback, relax and enjoy on Sunday afternoon.
Especially with a check engine light on the Chirons dash.
Harry's love for this car is really palpable when the engine is coming out and he paces back and forth like an about to be father.
Huh. I was thinking the same thing. It looked like he was witnessing the birth of his firstborn. And you could see the oh hell this is going to be bloody expensive face as well when they were looking at the engine afterwards.
Given he drove it hundreds of miles with bits of metal swilling around the gearbox, I hope he treats his kids better
@@InspirationSessions 🤣🤣🤣
@@foxxster3565 I'm surprised how pedantic he was being about it being spendy, when A: it's an old Lambo, never gonna be cheap. And B: he can clearly afford it.
@@dons1932 ha ha, rich people are often the most careful with their pennies in my experience
Your video dropped at the end of the F1 race in Bahrain, brilliant timing.
Yes! That couldn't have been done by accident! Harry and Co. just wanted our automotive entertainment to keep rolling along all day!
Forza Ferrari !
Iain is such a gent, not to mention his amazing knowledge and craftsmanship.
That he knows the drivetrains of SO MANY marques so intimately is almost beyond comprehension.
He's got a great sense of humour as well, though I can imagine he demands a lot from the lads.
I wonder how many Iain Tyrrell technicians it takes to change an Italian light bulb?
@@toastrytoaster Hard not to be when you're old, rich and work on very expensive cars all the time. Pretention comes with the territory lol.
And humour!
@@dreamcrusher112 Pretention? Not sure that's even a word.
“We got a good price for the carburetors”. Now that is a proper welcome 🙂. The British do have a nice sense of humor.
It’s nice to witness the progress on the Lamborghini. Love the craftsmanship. What a job to get the engine out. My lord…
Not to mention "I only wanted an oil change!" :-D
And Harry quipping about the labour cost for the extraction at 11:50 , "Well that didn't take long, 80 quid an hour, so, 40 quid?"
Brit humor at its best...
"... we got a good price for the carburetors.. "
"and we changed the headlamp you brought it for" he says over engine stripped Countach :D :D
@@norton750commando But Harry didn't realise that is per person and how many were involved in extracting the engine...... 😁😁
Harry just casually rockin around in a Bugatti
As one does !
Well... that's something you don't see everyday in the CZcams car community. 👏 👏 👏
Yeah, unfortunately most of the Lambo engine extractions we see involve a telephone pole.
What a knowledgeable, passionate guy Iain is, he must surely be one of the best restorers in the world!
wow , that drivetrain extraction was something else , loved the high tech cardboard box to keep the chain away from the body
I remember seeing a video on a man that owned a V8 Aston Martin. His comment about his car was “ Easy to acquire expensive to hang on to.” . I think of that man’s wisdom every time I watch a video like this.
Ian has you on tape, "and sir, of course you will want to do a full leak down and compression test..." haha, Harry's knee's about buckled under him. Such a great moment, as all of your videos are.
Harry has been the best in the business for at least 25 years from EVO to the current content, down to earth and honest chats about cool cars.
I was listening to the engine removal, but my eyes were roaming all over the background! A black Countach on gold wheels, a bronze Silhouette and a rather discreet Jalpa... Wow!!! 😍
Had to watch the engine crane footage from behind the sofa with my hands covering my eyes.. wow!!! Amazing to see.
Harry, for some reason, the engine out procedure reminds me of fishermen weighing a great white shark dockside.
I can now check the box labelled: "see Countach V-12 engine removed from Countach." on my bucket list. Last engine I pulled was a 400 cid V-8 from a Mercury Country Squire wagon in my friends garage. That is one wonderfully engineered piece of engineering there. You could plunk that directly in an art museum.
Only Harry could casually drive in for an update on his Countach in that Chiron - he’s doing life the right way and I absolutely love it! Iain as always is the embodiment of a knowledgeable gentleman - fantastic stuff!
Very interesting content. Who knew? Three classics in one video...Harry, Iain and a Countach!!
What more could you want. Thank you.
That Chiron is absolutely badass, I love those wheels can't wait to see the rebuild and the re-install
Flash Harry!
Bit UAE-flash git for me, personally I prefer Harry when he’s driving less rarified stuff, there are enough vids of bloody Bugs out there by now
I was just watching Iain's workshop update (as you do) and casually wondered if Harry's engine extraction video was up (as predicted by Iain recently). Glad to see it is, but I didn't expect Harry to roll up in a Bugatti!!
Casually drives a Chiron into a garage...no fanfare, no drama, and nothing frantic (unlike so many other CZcams car people...). Class.
Well that was awesome. What a great sight to see the engine come out vertical.
Absolutely amazing. Makes a Jag engine removal look simple.....
Always a joy to see Harry and Iain together - real gentlemen !
Now's the time to service/replace absolutely everything while the engine is out. Don't want to do that too many times.
Despite the price of these cars...they are unreliable at best....U would expect if you pay dearly for a car...it would run everytime.
@@phillipweissburg1882 who said they are unreliable?
some kids on reddit?
It’s probably just me but I’m left cold when I see the Chiron. I’d far rather look at and experience the Italian classics in Iain’s workshop. It’s so great that Harry is prepared to invest in keeping his classic fleet tip top. We’re really privileged to be given a ring side ticket. Keep the videos coming. Great stuff.
It's the £3m + that sends a shiver down my spine 😳
Nope. Not just you.
I had the privilege of a few days with a Veyron a couple years back and I find the Chiron far nicer to look at but the Veyron had a similar effect - until I got inside. I think they look a little too pristine and perfectly solid from a distance, especially on film, but in person they have a little more presence. It's the interior that really does it, though, obviously very different to a classic - there's clearly a lot more weight, solidity and structure to everything but the materials, the design and the tactility is genuinely amazing.
But, like the speed, it absolutely doesn't come across without actually sitting inside the things, like how we all know a Tesla is fast but you can't really get the feeling across without driving one.
it's that shite colour scheme, I've seen much more gorgeous chirons on youtube
Its hideous to be honest
You know Harry is a legend when he rocks up in a Chiron Pur Sport to check up on his Countach!! Mind blowing!! 😲😲😲 Xx
That check engine light on the Chiron :D
Well it is a vag car.
VW thing. They all do that
I would check it every day! 😉
This is why I don't own a classic car. That engine came out, I saw the frame work, my OCD kicked in and I wanted to get straight in there and clean the tubular frame until it gleamed again. My motorbike is a 2007 VFR800, it has done some mileage and still looks like it has just come out of the box. My dealer can't get over how perfect it is all over.
You don't own this care because you can't afford it.
@@johnsmith1474 probably wanna learn to spell 3 letter words before you try insulting random people the internet, go back call of duty please.
Yeah, fully clean the engine/box/all underside!
@@robinhooduk8255 Sadly, there's always one, isn't there?
Harry, since they took the engine out, let them do whatever they have to do to make it work perfectly and you don't have to come back in a couple of months to take the engine out again to change the clutch or some other gasket or tune up the valves. Being the owner of a Countach you should not skimp on maintenance costs. If Iain suggests you do something else while the engine is out, you shouldn't hesitate to do it.
I’m from the U.S. but hearing two English older men talk in a soothing calmly voice is satisfying and the best part it’s all about cars.
Absolutely bonkers! You have to do that every time it needs a new clutch?! That engine is massive...
Absolute Chad Harry, arrives in a Bug to his Lamb, this is why I love his content....
Zabawy bogatych ludzi. Tylko pozazdrościć, ale tak bez zazdrości ... wspaniała sprawa. Wielki szacun dla głównego Pana mechanika. Rewelacja 👍 Oby countach jeździł jak szatan.
You just simply can not love Harry, best content on YT. One video he casually rocks up in Chiron to see engine out of his Countach by nobody else but master Ian himself, then in other video Harry's potting around in his wellies and gives you lecture on oil seed rape and how to operate a combine harvester.
Top Vid, Harry once again proving he's the king of cool rocking up in a Chiron.
It almost defies belief to see how the engine and transmission of this car come out. Absolutely crazy! Great job Harry, Iain, and the hard working crew for showing us this!
Thank you for sharing such a moment with the world. Now we all wait for the prognosis. Will be so interesting to learn where that dreadful noise was coming from. Let's hope it's nothing dreadful.
The intro banter is priceless, love the headlight bulb…..
I was really looking forward to seeing how that engine and gearbox was going to come out of that car. Every bit the pain in the arse I was expecting... except... it wasn't! Those lads actually made it "look" almost easy. Clearly in good hands.
Wow! Vertical! You wouldn't get that done in a small garage 😃
Great vid Harry.
Would love a little one on the bugatti if you have time 😘😘🤣
My local garage says all makes and models so I assume they have one of these lifts too.

Fantastic, hopefully we can see the whole repair.
increadible engineering, just classic stuff. Thank you Harry!
These restoration series are fantastic!
Absolutely do a leak-down test while the engine is out!
I can't believe he even hesitated. Straight yes!!!
But then he has been driving it with a shattered gearbox for 12 years.
Knowledge is power and a leak down test is quick and easy way to find out.
@@_Rich_. He is a multi millionaire with a garage full of the world's finest.
Regardless of cost nobody will ever write off an original Countach that can easily be rectified.
@@dizzy2020 He ignored the gearbox for 12 years.
I guess an engine rebuild is on the cards 😉 (Harry won't be able to resist)
Great to see the engine and the gearbox (gear level) - wow. Reminds me of my youth in the late 60s and early 70s when we used to move heavy engines around using a block and tackle. Things change but always remain the same. thank you Harry once again!
Everybody hanging or leaning on the rear bodywork made my blood pressure spike after Iain saying that the weight of the vents alone makes the panels crack. :D Great episode as usual, and Harry just rocking up in a Chiron, as you do made it even more fab. And Oh my god, that V12/Gearbox/diff is some powerplant.
I did wonder at everyone leaning all over it so soon after Ian had said about that..!!
Great unique video journey. Many thanks for taking us along. Fingers crossed for the gearbox diagnosis!
This channel is lovely. Thank's Harry for share all this moments.
That engine hoist is a bit more impressive than anything Halford’s keep in stock.
Agreed, but it's also strangely comforting to know that a company like Iain's buy some of their equipment from Machine Mart like we mere mortals! :-P
Yet another TV Gold video from Harry and Iain - Kudos - and what a magnificent lump ! ( Iain's face when Harry said 40 quid total labour - priceless 😁)
Simply fascinating, love Lamborghinis, especially seeing the maintenance and guts of them. Can't wait to see more
I've always wanted a Countach. That dream ended today. Thanks Harry, for crushing that dream. LOL
Is 18:21 deemed the perfect length for classic car videos? Both yours and Iain Tyrrell’s videos out this afternoon are exactly that. Both great too, thank you!
Plenty happened in 1821 , Constable completed the Haywain, a masterpiece as is the Countach.
wow, never seen this before. fantastic. thanks Harry.
That was an eye opener, never would have believed it that much work. Would look as a nice coffee table all cleaned up. Thanks for sharing can’t wait to see it come apart
Fantastic to get to watch that engine coming out. Fingers crossed Harry that Iain doesn’t find too much unexpected stuff needing done. Keep these great videos coming. Love it when you and Iain get together. Thanks. Michael
It was amazing to see the removal procedure for the engine, hopefully the oil leaks will be easily fixed and the gearbox issue less drastic than you imagine. But turning up in a Chiron was totally “like a boss”👍 hopefully there’s a video review “coming along very soon”
Swabs, clamps please nurse, scalpel.... I found I was holding my breath through that “operation”! It would be really interesting to know what it costs to change a clutch on a Countach. I had the chance to buy a black Countach in New Malden about 35 years ago, not a lot of money either. Having watched this, I think I made the right decision to pass on that opportunity!
Quite right: it's never about the purchase price! My v12 Ferrari experience still makes my wallet wince, and not a day goes by when I regret freeing myself from it's menacing presence 😅
What a treat for Iain and his craftsman to let us see this. Genuine love from Iain for how the wings were made and what the car is. Hopefully a video of the Chiron coming. Thanks Harry
I'm not a mechanic and haven't a clue about mechanics but I could listen to you both talking about that car and engine all day.... The way he explains things is superb....
Vive la countach bravo pour la vidéo. Je pense que beaucoup d'entre vous ne connaissais pas cette gymnastique pour sortir le v 12 .super travail du garage tyrrel comme d'habitude
Such a beautiful car!
Bleedin' Hell, Harry...you do know how to make an entrance! 👏😎
That was truly one of the most remarkable feats of automotive surgery I have ever witnessed.
Fascinating to see, and hear you Ian chatting about it all.
An absolutely fantastic video, this is master automotive surgery, bravo 👏🏻
I've seen a few of these Countach engine removals and as a mechanic of many years my question is why not try to bring the front of the car up a bit more to try and reduce the extreme, basically vertical angle of the engine? Anyways love the channel!
Great video Harry, what a work of art that engine is . Thanks for this wonderful insight into the engine removal
Past few years of H’s Garage has been epic with all the restorations and maintenance videos.
Did this guy do the Espada for Harry. He really knows his stuff and so matter of fact. Brilliant
Wow! I can see why they like using that big old gantry for getting the engine/gearbox out!
You should’ve taken a picture with the engine and gearbox on the lift like fishermen do with giant fish on the docks
It did remind me of the scene in Jaws, with the sharks strung up,..
Cool arrival at Ian's fantastic garage. Can't wait for the progress videos
Inimitable Sir Harry. The only man to rock up in a Bugatti to come and check out the work on his Countach…. God Bless!
Yesterday I watched a re run of "The Italian Job:" on tv. Quite a poignant moment watching the opening sequence with the Mura Iain restored and Matt Munro singing. Mind you Iain didn't do a bad job of the "On days like these" track when he re ran the same sequence. Pure nostalgia ( Your only meant to blow the bloody doors off)

Fascinating video as always, Harry. Thank you for sharing.
I'm torn between a) admiration for the amazing technical skill and automotive knowledge on display and the genuine likability of Harry and Iain and b) the thought that this is way way way too many resources being used for ONE rich guy to maintain ONE car out of his huge fleet of toy cars.
Don't be so ridiculous
I agree. Difficult to think otherwise if you have your head screwed on the right way..
I can't believe the engine has to come out for a clutch change at such frequent intervals (depending on your driving habits). A pity the engineers didn't design it so that the engine dropped down considering the overall length as now this whole process has to be repeated in reverse.
Italian designers sneer at any design compromise for easier maintenence.
@@golden.lights.twinkle2329 And yet they were smart enough to build straight roads to shorten the journey.
Thanks for sharing that with us Harry 😊
What a treat. A Harry's Garage and a Tyrells Workshop video just a few hours apart. Thanks Gents.

Chiron owner : " hi Harry do you know anything about the oily fingerprints all over the interior ?"
As arrivals go it doesn't get any better than that Harry!
Quality content as always...thank you
Much respect to both gentlemen. Harry is legendary.
Will Harry do a field inspection and wading test in the Bugatti on Harry’s Farm? 🙏
Harry, have you considered getting the engine bay dry ice cleaned while you’re “in there”? Maybe the engine too if it’s not getting torn to bits?
only people who do not drive their cars do that
I don’t see why keeping an engine and engine compartment clean is only for a garage queen 🤔 especially a classic car like the ones Mr T works on as getting rid of all the grit and grime makes it easier to see where an oil leak is coming for and it’s sooo much nicer to work on a clean car than one covered in 40 year old muck. Although I agree that cars are to be driven, these cars here are also to be looked at in awe and it’s just a bit more satisfying to look at something that’s clean….and looking at Mr T’s video from today I guess he agrees 😏
Between you & Ian you have the most informative & interesting channels on the web ❤️
That's the most incredible engine extraction I've ever seen !!!
So let's start the betting odds on whether or not Harry goes full rebuild on this engine. I say there is a %70 chance Iain does a full rebuild. What say you?
epic Harry, what a piece of work
These two classics talking could go on til dawn and I’d watch every second
Great show! Looking forward to digging into that gearbox noise.
This reminds me of when I took the air filter off my 1974 Austin Maxi. the bolts were pretty tight, but with the help of an engine hoist, I got there in the end. A couple of bits and pieces from Halfords later, and the car was running a lot better.
I like how the Chiron Is just the car you drove there, not the focus od the video
Wow that was amazing. Delicate balancing act performed faultlessly. Well done to the team. Another excellent video and very educational.
Wouldn't have believed it without see it happen! Definitely a job for someone you can trust. Well done Iain and his team!
