Lamborghini Diablo; is the first version the best driving Diablo of all?

- Lamborghini launched the Diablo in 1990 and I've long thought it's the best value Diablo of all. With 492bhp from its 5.7litre V12, this is a 202mph analogue Lamborghini supercar that still feels special today. Here's my take on this classic Lamborghini supercar..

Harry single handily increases the value of every early two-wheel-drive Diablo around the world.
😂 Exactly
Seems to have worked rather quickly too, anyone seen any trace of these 60k cars he mentioned? anyone... anyone... Bueller...
Arg! Even harder to get my fave lambo now! The New lambos are not lambos :(
@@TheTimeDetective42 But they are better cars in every way.
@@SuperBaconbutty He paid £160k for it.

“Nothing dear, it’s just ‘arry, out for a toot!”
Harry, very matter of fact- "I weigh all my cars". Harry is the petrolhead we'd all be if we had loads of money. What a bloke.
If you weigh your cars you get to see where the weight is ? Not all are well balanced.
I thought everybody did it?
You can weight your car at your local rubbish weight station scales.
In 1991, I sat in a red Diablo on a Florida vacation. I was 10 Years old and had shelves full of automotive magazines.
That was the best part of my vacation
Me too in either Miami or Ft Lauderdale in 1992, it stuck in my mind ever since. I too was age 9 or 10.
Dude, I saw a Lamborghini on vacation in Florida too, in the early 90s. I saw a white Countach though, from a distance. Still remember my field of vision, exactly how I saw it.
Lucky enough to visit Italy in the 1990s. Only saw a 208 GTB Turbo, kind of a neat car. Italy put small motors in everything.

I thought I'd found a red Countach when I went to California in 1993. I was 19 and a huge Lamborghini fan. I made the driver turn round and go back. Turned out to be a replica, but me and my mate still got some ace pics stood next to it with the doors up.
I so wanna go back to California, loved that place.
“I’m going to shut up and let you listen to the engine” best car reviewer on utube! Wow
Many of them say that..
💯♥️ Agreed
He is, precise and accurate! 🙌🙌
By far the best
Arguably one of the best car channels on youtube. His reviews always provide the info you want, whether you're a fan of a car or interested in purchasing.
*Even in 2019 the Diablo is still my dream car*
looks way better than anything Lambo is doing now.
💯♥️ Mine as well
It is fuckin' cool, eh? They could totally just remake this thing with modern options/parts and it would sell like hotcakes :)
mine too, diablo is the lambo of my teenage years. I heard somewhere that we tend to keep loving the lambo of our teenage years as our favourite and it's totaly true with me, did you born in late 80's too?
Same
In 1994 I was in my first year of university at RMIT in the CBD of Melbourne, Australia. One day I walked out the front door and parked on the street was one of these. I nearly fainted. The owner was standing next to the car, and he looked like a rich international student. Lucky bugger. Anyway, I wandered off and I was about 100 metres up the road and he started the car. The whole street shook. Thinking about, even now 26 years later, sends a chill down my spine. I swear the engine in that car is a gateway to hell. Best car name ever.
I also went to RMIT, started in 1997. Seems like yesterday. Which street was the Lambo in? Latrobe, or that little road that ran through the middle of the uni?
You weren't there because I was there
In 1990, I sat behind the wheel of the first Diablo to be imported into Australia. The V12 was left idling when the driver ( the Australian distributor's son) leapt in an agitated state as the local Motor Registry wouldn't issue a Certificate due a missing piece of paper from Italy ! The new owner ( due to collect the car that afternoon ) was going to be very disappointed . Even at idle , it was a scary beast with the speedo reading to 340 km/ hr.
The Diablo was the first supercar I was aware of that I loved, holds a special place in my heart
Same. I have always preferred the look of the Diablo over the Countach.
@@geoffmooregm
Ditto!
Same here. This and the porsche 959 and 911(993) and some later the F50 and Mclaren F1
THERE IS A LANCIA 037 IN THE BACK!!! Please do a video on that one.
Scrolled down to the comments to say exactly this!
F40 and 037 my two fantasy cars.. I doubt I could decide which to have if someone said you can only take one.. Driven the F40, but not been lucky enough to drive an 037, although I have been in the passenger seat of one.. owned by the same lucky Alan B'Stard that owns the F40..
My jibblets are jibbling!
Make the video Harry!
First thing I noticed! Where’s the review?
...”If you enjoy driving, then phwoar - it’s a complete overdose”... once again, Harry nails it in a single sentence.
The best line I've heard from a motoring journalist in a long time. Brilliant!
And who needs viagra? A spin around the block in this would do it!
I'm not sure any car will ever match the presence the Diablo has, even today. When this car came out in the 90's it was absolutely legendary. I still think it is THE definition of a supercar.
Also, I agree with Harry, the wing absolutely ruins it.
17:26 I had chills going down my spine with that 1st - 2nd gear pull, just marvelous
Yay another Harry's garage! Something to watch while my wife watches some rubbish on TV tonight.
She is probably watching Coro street or a similar program, ha ha, NO contest, Coro street or Harry,s Garage Lamborghini Diablo, hmmm, tough choice, ha ha.
Trying to hear this over some garbage called “singletown” hahaha
Simon Chambers bake-off dancing or Harry? Ummmm. 👍👍👍

@@ianjames3078 I dunno what she's watching but I got relegated to the conservatory TV!
Wow that is the fastest 25 mins I have ever experienced. What an enthralling piece. Thanks Harry.
This is wonderful motoring journalism. No one does it better than Harry right now!
I saw a white Diablo with white interior outside uni in Trafalgar Square in 91’ and to this day it’s the biggest wow car I’ve ever seen in the flesh! We all stood looking all over it for about an hour!
Mundane booring sound going through the town, no one turning their heads, but omg when he started pushing it and the V12 sound came through, jesus! Goose bumps all over :)
I think the Diablo is still one of the best looking Lamborghini's out there!😍👌🏼
Much more pretty than those tryhard modern lambos that try to look expensive rather than functionally beautiful.
The name speaks for itself
I agree
Along with the Murcielago and the Miura
I agree the Diablo really set the bar for the company for it being the first production car with a 202 top speed and awd...this generation really missed out on a true supercar of the era..if I ever win the lottery I'm buying a 2001 Diablo 6.0 color doesn't matter.. It looks good all by it's self, 30 years later.😁💟♌
This is my new topgear.... Proper car enthusiast
Watching again in 2022, this remains my favourite Harry’s Garage video
While I know the Lamborghini V12 is a phenomenally smooth running engine they somehow managed to make it sound dirty, fantastic work
" When you press the brake pedal- you stop!" Brilliant, Harry, as always. Cheers
16:12 ...brakes definitely are handy.
Mr Moss im obviously missing something that you and 161 others find understandable, let me get this straight, your an utter loser right?
Brilliant.....
@@ScumDenial no- you must be because you are trolling. Go fish elsewhere.
@@ScumDenial I thought Mr Moss was making a comment about that thing called dry British humour/sarcasm in Harry stating an obvious feature of the car in a quirky way.
“ it’s like an uncouth Mclaren F1” - Harry.
Brilliant.
I can't imagine how exciting that drive is. The gear whine. The deep intake sound. Love how the rpm of the engine increases when it gets a little light on its tires.
I was lucky enough to use a 91 Diablo as an everyday car for 9 years and I loved every moment . It is much quicker than one might think . The previous owner made small changes to make it more comfortable like moving the bottom half of the gauges over to the centre console to lower the cliff instrument cluster . I have a video on youtube showing it all .I really miss that car .this might sound silly but even my tigers loved riding in it and it was very comfortable for them to hang halfway out the window . anyway , I really enjoyed the video .
Are you out of jail Tiger King?
Just a joke, don't take it personally, please
Meh, Carol Baskin's golf cart is equally appealing.
Where is your check mark?
You got a video on your channel about it?
Relevation!
So good it needs new words.
👍👍👍😁😁😁
Yes! I thought I misheard him, but he said it again. What's up Harry???
Came here to highlight that one as well... pretty sure the word we expected was revelation which is "a surprising and previously unknown fact that has been disclosed to others." Relevation is "A raising or lifting up." Never mind Harry, I'll keep subscribing, keep liking, and the bell is still switched on :)
Revelation/Elevation crossbred...like noising chuffy.
Worth noting on Harry's command of the English language...
- Noun. *relevation*. (obsolete) A raising or lifting up.
(en.wiktionary.org/wiki/relevation)
@ 15:26 Harry first mentioned the electric windows would be a "relevation" to Countach owners, just as he was winding them up or they were being "elevated" ...so, correct!
@ 19:37 Harry then mentioned the steering was just a "relevation". The steering wheel is actually adjustable and can be raised or "lifted up" ...so once again, correct!
Well done Harry, not just a great car reviewer, but also a master of the (slightly obsolete) English language 👍😁

The Diablo was my poster car growing up, want one even more after watching this!
Chris E Mine was countach, but I converted.
I am delighted that someone actually remembers the Cizeta story! It's a fabulous piece of Lamborghini and motoring history.
Do mention the W-16 engine.
czeta moroda v16T nice car shame it never took off - would love to see one in real life
Just brilliant!!!! What I like with his videos is you get to see every details of the interior, where to put your stuff and other little bits, how usable the car is on long distance travel. Just found his videos a week ago by chance and I really like the quality of them. Great piece of work sir !
Gotta love Lambo V12. That noise as they start to dig in. The slow, unrushed gear change. What a machine.
17:25 !
Absolutely brilliant. Love that over the shoulder camera angle.
@Bigg Papa... Yadda Yadda Yadda. Not interested mate.
@Bigg Papa ...you've answered you're own concern with your own word tone. He's talking about EMOTION here. It's not if P is better than L. It's an on the edge machine for the senses that can throw you into the scenery at the drop of a throttle - it's a dangerous car. So what if it blows up in the process lol?
@Bigg Papa overgrown volkswagen beetle
That V12 sound is synonymous with the opening credits of Cannonball Run!
I saw that movie somewhere recently ( the last years). And the enginesound was dubbed! I couldn`t watch it!

This car is timeless; such a perfect review as well
And it stared at my favourite Paul Verhoeven movie - in black and in white.
When I was a kid I lusted for a countach, as I am older I am more attracted to the Diablo. It looks more grown up and practical.
miura gang
I'm younger so I'm into the succeeding styling of the murcielago
Dark FuZe fair enough
The Diablo is a purely evolutionary outgrowth of the countach. It literally is a more modern and better handling countach. There's a direct design evolution from the lp500 fountain prototype to today's aventador svj.
@@HourRomanticist same here. I always thought mucielago is super gorgeous, maybe I'm biased since it's my childhood dream lol.
The 037 in the corner!!!!!
First few seconds in and Jamiroquai is playing in my head... Most likely for the week.
Scrolled down to find this inevitable comment.
Lovely review that shows that supercars from the late 80s, early 90s have so much more character than the computers we drive today!
And then the design.... Made by human hands, rather than cad-files.
While everyone raves about the countach the diablo is my childhood bedroom poster having grown up in the 90s. I Remember as a child I would be drawn towards the scale model of the Diablo more than the other cars. It’s always been my favourite Lambo.
For most of us who can’t afford to even spot at one at our local roads thank you Harry for sharing the experience.
Never seen Harry as viscerally excited as in this review. Now I want a Diablo even more!
Me too! Especially with his Valentino comments!
Countach, Diablo, and Pantera are my favorite 80's/ early 90's exotics.
I'm sure I've commented on this before but I come back to this video a lot. Of all the cars you've driven on this channel, this is the one that appears to excite you the most from what you can tell as a viewer. It would be great to see you drive this again to see how it compares to what you've driven since. It is such a beautiful car in terms of look and sound - one of the peak car designs of all time. From what the owner says about it and the way you look when you drive it it seems like this truly is the essence of driving. Would be a great addition to the garage if you could get your hands on one.
The absolute meaning right here of what a scary car is. You really get the impression of what a supercar is right here. The engine, the power, the torque. Modern cars simply don't have this driver experience and Harry really does a great job of explaining it all. Amazing video. Thank you.
I have never felt the thrill of a car through a video until I watched Harry drive! It’s a Relevation (as Harry says) 😂
True
He said relevation twice bless him. I love Harry's videos.
He's not using it incorrectly though as he's using it in comparison to the Countach as it "it's improved over the Countach"- it's just a very old-fashioned word you don't really hear anymore.
What an event. And the steering is a relevation!
@@Beer_Dad1975 It's more than old fashioned - it's obsolete. I'd be interested to know which word Harry intended to use. I don't really care though, happy with either. What a machine - probably as near as I'll get to going for a drive in a Diablo. Cheers Harry.
That's the best bit of media on a Diablo I've ever seen. Thanks, Harry!
As someone who gets bored of super car videos, your channel is bloody brilliant. Thankyou
Yes, finally Harry is reviewing my all-time dream car! I've been a fan of this Lambo since my earliest childhood, I remember having like 20 different Diablo toy cars, from various Matchbox ones to my precious 1/18 Giallo Bburago model. It's amazing how this design, after all these years, still manages to mesmerize me. Such a timeless classic!!
Genuine Goosebumps the first time and every time you floor it! Travelling Without Moving Flashback.
The best Sunday evening entertainment there is! Thanks Harry!
My father has owned an early ‘93 2WD Diablo (albeit tastefully modified) for most of my life. As a child, I remember how he used to compare it to “driving a truck” because of the sheer weight of the steering and clutch.
Despite that, he always says he never tires of driving it. Pure 90s supercar drama and ceremony.
One of the most enjoyable harrys garage reviews. Really get to feel the car. What a machine. The engine sounds epic. So raw, muscular and reevy at the same time.
" I could obscure my vision even more- if I wanted". LMAO Well done, sir.
That was my favourite part of the video as well lol
Thanks Harry the Diablo is one of my favorite supercars of the 1990's. Loved how when you kicked the throttle a warning light turns on. God I love old Lambos.
19:11 this car could be real trouble in the wrong hands for sure it seems after what he said there. The way it's kind of bouncing and picking up all the road undulations like a thoroughbred 18:56 20:20 I totally believe intimidating is the reality at speed.
@@bradford_shaun_murray Richard Hammond lamented the loss of "Lamborghinis that try to kill you" when he tested a new one, I can only guess the Diablo was what he had in mind.

This is the exact sentiments I felt driving my father-in-law's Diablo.
It is a heavy steering, heavy pedalled, small cabined, noisy, torquey, somewhat terrifying, experience at first.
But, once you get a couple of miles under the wheels, it is the best driving experience I have yet found.

I see Harry upload a video, I watched it. Simple. Just like Harry.
When i was ~ 13, i was with my dad at a big gas station at a big 4 lane intersection. While filling up, i looked out at the traffic, there was this low, sleek shape, 4 headlights in the front, half the height of whatever was standing next to it. Then it took of with this bellowing howl, off like a flash, was out of sight, but that exhaust note rang out for some time. The car was a Lamborghini Espada. That V12 sound. still recall the moment when i look at this video. Harry is the man.
Another great vid, Harry. I cherish each and every one but this is extra special because Diablo is that poster car I had on my wall as a kid and it will remain my "dream car" forever.
