Diesel lovers, hate on me. The gas XD is a blessing. Looking to tow a 20-30ft airstream, and and the F150 falls short in PAYLOAD. The Extra payload of the XD (and particularly the gas XD) means you can throw 4 adults in the crew cab, generator in the truck bed, and have enough tongue weight capacity left over for the ~10-15% of the trailer. Most people overlook the weight of the family in the cab in regards to payload, the XD (gas) solves this problem. When pulling an airstream an F250 would do well, but the comfort of the F150 is missing in the F250. The gas XD seems to solve both of these problems with a smooth ride, and high payload. When traveling for recreation a smooth ride is appreciated, not looking for a stiff throw you around over every bump ride.
International Serenity 28
Hitch Weight (w/LP & w/o options, water & cargo) (lbs.) 950
Unit Base Weight (w/LP & w/o options, water & cargo) (lbs.) 5,923
Add your luggage, water, propane in the trailer and a family of five in the crew cab, generator in the bed, and the 2500lbs payload usage becomes apparent.
Taking the leap and trusting my ~$55-60k on a Nissan XD Platinum Reserve vs the F250, now that is going to take some convincing. I want a truck that will last 10 years of hard work. I feel uneasy in this aspect choosing the Nissan over the F250.
Titans are the most underrated truck on the market.
Love my 2021 Titan Pro 4X.
I bought the 2017 Titan XD Platinum Reserve w/ Cummins TD. I added a 6" Procomp lift and 35" tires at purchase. I added airbags aftermarket. It is my only vehicle. It is pure luxury and tows our 7800 lb. travel trailer like a dream. I'm in So. California, and even here, I get thumbs-up and many inquiries. Most people say, "Wow".
My brother and I are convinced that Nissan is insanely brilliant here. The "smaller" XD, with the Diesel is our dream truck, he has a Titan currently, my last full size truck was a Raptor (it was too wide for the trails/roads I use here in Arizona).
The big 3 are so caught up with enough torque to pull a train that has derailed, as well as, costs that are up near home prices territory.
We think once the public catches onto the XD, and their smaller Titan, they'll take a huge hit out of Ford/Dodge/GM. It might take a few years, and a lot of advertising, but toss in the EcoBoost nonsense (full disclosure I do like Fords but they lost me on that engine) the public will turn.
I use my truck for going out into the desert, to shoot and hunt, I tow nothing other than an occasional car/bike trailer but that is rare. We currently have a 2016 Tacoma TRD off-road, 2016 370z nismo and a 2011 GT500.
+Gil Vietor Thanks for the very thoughtful insight on this . . . Reality is that it's a tough market to crack because unlike the car world, Detroit never lost as step from the 70s through the end of the century. That said, I also agree that Nissan is onto something here - question is whether they can break the lock on this market - even just a small percentage moves the needle. That said, hats off on your collection there . . .
+MotoManTV Thanks, I wasn't trying to brag, I was more into showing I am no longer a brand purchaser.
Very nice this one. ....the nicest looking of all the bigger pickups imo. ....sure would love to own one.
I have a chevy suburban, and would consider this truck spring 2017. I live in Minnesota and I pull a 5,000 lb boat and a 8000 pound trailer. The diesel is the way to go for me and the Cummins is worth the extra 5K. I think Nissan is very smart especially being built and made in the USA.
David Puchtell hello did you purchase the XD.? I am looking for real world update thx
Did you end up buying?
Thanks for going in detail on the engine.
Loved this episode. I love driving from Franklin/Brentwood to Murfreesboro on the 840. Very scenic. I just brought a 2016 Nissan Max SR. Love it. I also own a 2008 GMC Sierra crew cab. I believe that Nissan found a niche with the XD. There are times that I wish I had a 2500 for heavy duty work on our property, but also my wife (5 ft 3inches) loves the full size of are Sierra for mall and farmers market runs. Would have bought one, but my local Nissan did not want to give me a deal.
currently drive a 2002 ford f150 and hvac repairman, i live in the south . i love the idea of the diesel powered titan xd its the perfect in between truck i can the fifth wheel and get half way decent fuel milage all around that's why my next truck will be a titan xd its the perfect size truck for me.
Love watching your episodes. I am a huge truck guy and not brand loyal in anyways. Most of us truck guys like the 1/2 tons because their easier to park, ride smoother, and are more affordable...that being said we've all been searching for a truck that pulls the car trailer or boat (8-10k lbs) but tows it very well. Point being, tundra was an excellent tow machine for a half ton but sucked gas horribly bad. Personally I've switched to the ecodiesel ram because I get the best of all worlds without spending 80 grand on a giant beast that I can't park anywhere. I would consider the Titan diesel as well but my needs are no longer pulling heavy heavy stuff. The ram also has a "auto" setting for the four wheel drive and coupled with coil rear suspension or bags it offers a superb ride here in the Midwest snow area. Titan xd has 6 speed as opposed to Rams 8. No "auto" 4x4
I have a lawn care business and also put a boat in and out of water with that I have a Ford f150 xlt 4x4 5.4 crew, 6.5 bed. I biting at the bit to try and test an XD diesel with a sunroof maybe and or a platinum XD. An 18 or 19 would be fun to take for a drive... I love trucks!
My father has has driven a chevy heavy half for over a decade. They share parts between the 2500 and the 1500 where they count, and can come with the larger engine. He got into them, because after buying chevy for over a decade through the 90's he came to realize that they could pull within their rated capacities which he was running somewhat safely under, but often weren't reliable over the long term. He uses a 1500 for commuting and hauling, to this day, and brings the old 1500HD out, which is the only truck he's never thought about trading, for towing, hauling, and bringing on trips that aren't planned out where he wants to be prepared. Its not had one issue, runs its specs reliably, feels better then a half ton, costed less then a 3/4 and he obviously doesn't need any more truck. EPA fuel economy is not a heavy consideration for a working truck, so there's no guarantee of improvement (quite the opposite usually) over older models without variable valve-trains that are bought and paid for so long as they have sufficient power, and driving dynamics which his does. Hi comp pistons are always welcome though.
Its perfect for him. The American made Nissan Titan XD Pro-4x with a gas engine would a logical trade in had he the need, although I would assume in that price range he would heavily consider a Power Wagon which is undoubtedly a wiser investment and arguably a better value and a more capable truck since he goes off road. Reliability is the main concern for a man who keeps his truck long term and needs to count on it.
im not crazy about the front end, but that blue paint is awsome and the interior is nice!
Nice review. I like the way the engine sounds and the interior is awesome. I prefer panoramic sunroof. Also, please wear safety shoes next time.
Definitely interested in the gas XD. I've done some research and was conflicted between the gas or diesel. I tow a 27' travel trailer and the torque of the diesel XD is appealing, but I only tow it 2-5 times a year. I started looking at the gas version of the XD and it seems to be able to do all that I would need it to do and be more user friendly than it's diesel counterpart.I currently drive an 07 GMC Sierra Classic CC 3500 SRW with the 8.1l and 6spd Allison transmission. It has more than enough grunt to pull my trailer through areas I like to camp in, but being a 3500 cost me more in DMV fees, the fuel mileage is a measly 12-12.5mpg on average and tires are $50-60 more than a lighter duty truck.I live in the Mojave Desert of California and use my truck mostly for trips that need to have stuff picked up. The towing that I need to do can easily be accomplished with the XD gas. I think Nissan has come up with a perfect tuck for us that need slightly more than a 1500 but not quite a 2500. BRAVO to them for thinking outside the box.
Nice interior.
Not really into Pick Ups M. they are cool & all, but they are not for me … that said, I wouldn’t mind owning an Escalade EXT. however, if I find an SRT Ram & I have the means …. Reasons be dammed lol.
Is it the same engine powering the Patrol, "Armada" & the QX80?
As always, excellent work M! Loved the factory tour.
I have a 2011 Titan SV as a daily driver and use it to tow a 6500LB travel trailer. I like this truck a lot, but I have concerns about the problem areas that have not been fully addressed (rear diffs, manifolds) for the 12 year run of the first generation models. I am considering switching to a Toyota Tundra for their demonstrated reliabilty, but the new gasser Titan is tempting. The problem is pricing. Out here (Vancouver BC Canada) a 2016 Tundra SR5 with tow package costs about $50,000. A 2016 Titan SV 5.6L costs over $60,000. (XD diesel is $70,000 plus).
I wish we had more in pick up trucks like an all electric tesla pickup truck and a hybrid already
I am getting the gas xd. I will use it for long travels/towing. currently I drive a prius c 😅
mynor trinidad hello did you purchase the XD? If so do you recommend it? Thx
Panoramic would be very nice as long as it opens
Looking for a truck that can haul a 2000-2200 lbs slide in camper but don't really want a full size 3/4 truck. XD Gasoline looks perfect with 2500 lbs payload. Diesel only 1700 lbs. And Nissan quality/reliability looks nice.
Did That plant build the KA24E engine?
I like it, i would likely prefer the 1500 though or something from the competition instead of the XD
Aluminum crankshafts, awesome & hilarious......
yeah, what's he talking about? . they used to be billet steel.
U need to review the Q60S red sport coupe
This brings up the question - does any manufacturer produce a real truck anymore? What I mean is a truck with a diesel engine (or a simple, low-tech V8 gasoline/petrol engine), that also has a manual transmission, that has hand-crank windows and a vinyl interior (for easy cleaning). Now, I don't mean to sound like a Neanderthal, because I still need some level of modern technology. For example, an HD radio with Sirius connectivity wouldn't hurt, Bluetooth as well. AC is a necessity, too. Beyond that, though, let's face it, what more can a person need in a truck? I mean, a person, who actually needs a truck and is going to use it as one, not a person who buys it as a status symbol or a grocery shopper, forever condemned to the asphalt streets of the city. I hate to say it, but it seems to me that the Europeans and the Asians have a better grip on this idea.
The only place you can get a real base fullsize pickup truck is in México.
interested xd gas for towing 26ft trailer & 17ft behind trailer
i have 2005 titan le at the moment.. love the truck but not my local dealership
17ft boat behind trailer
not really a truck guy... more a motorcycle and car guy... but I've been looking into trucks lately as a crossover between owning a home and the many many many reason a pickup truck would come in handy for, plus being able to haul our bikes state to state or even our dirt bikes will be a blessing.... I'm stuck between this titan and the dodge ram 1500. I guess either would be sufficient enough for me and my situation.... but I have a problem of wanting the best out of two even if it comes with more than I need... any thoughts...? and I would love the panoramic sun roof I would go crazy over...
The Nissan Titan XD is too much truck for that kind of lifestyle, but of course it feels great having an unstoppable truck that you never have to worry about. You'd be fine with a ram 1500 if you've gotten by without a truck for this long. A good dealer will let you test drive with a load if you have concerns. Your brakes and suspension are more important then acceleration, but of course I can't fathom your driving preferences and some guys feel they need THE POWER!!!! ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS, do not just consider a truck by the manufacturers rated capability as these are not factual nor do they account for your specific needs. Real world info and testing is the only way to go for a work vehicle. For the majority of people taking trails and exploring the wilderness smaller is generally better. I prefer a smaller truck for unloaded driving dynamics, but a larger one for city driving as I'm good at parking, and feel safer. Another thing, and people never consider this anymore, is being able to access your truck box without crawling into it. Its worthwhile trading the cargo capacity when you can reach over the box for me.
You can also get a Nissan Frontier with a sunroof. It would be cheaper, and will depreciate rapidly, but overall you will lose less money then a 50k Titan. They are "outdated" so Nissan has been working hard to create incentive through affordable options. Very reliable truck. Had its problems early in production but they've been smoothed out for going on 10 years now. I'd highly recommend looking into it. They are a blast and will be phased out soon. Historically reliably and better fit and just put together very well compared to offerings from the Big 3, but I'm not sure against the newer offerings.
You'd be paying about the same in fuel cost, but insurance may vary, and maintenance will be cheaper as your costs will be similar to a car with a midsize truck. A set of decent tires for those heavy trucks can easily run over $1000 and even more if you start over sizing. They take more fluids, more everything. It adds up especially if you check the diesel option but I gotta say I appreciate how a big truck drives. 15-16 inch wheels are cheapest and in my opinion look awesome with the meaty rubber. 17 inch is the next best thing for price, and probably gives you slightly quicker steering feel and looks big enough to be modern....You also have the most tire options in this size.
The new chevy pickups are based on longstanding, proven, reliable designs. You can look forward to rotting rear fenders in the future if you don''t sell it within 5 years. Great, affordable, reliable trucks and the new ones drive more like a car then any truck I've driven personally.
I'm sure the F-150 being lighter is competitive in that aspect as well but it won't outperform a chevy when used as a truck. I'm not sold on the turbo's in those yet but most folks are. Ford is a great company but they do the dumbest stuff everyonce and awhile. Chevy makes a great truck and is possibly the most reliable, but they historically cheap out on certain things that don't really affect getting the job done, like the body panels, gaskets, ignition switches and rattly interior panels...stuff like that. It gets on my nerves but if you are a chevy guy you understand and its not a big deal.
The most sensible purchase you could make, is probably a clean preowned Tacoma from the last generation, or if you want a space ship, the all new Tacoma.
Please can Nissan Send some to the Southern Tip Of Africa? Would Love one. Sadly Trucks of that size dont make it here. Stuck with the Frontier/Navara
An aluminum crankshaft? Never heard of that.
Are you sure about that billet aluminum for those crankshafts? Pretty sure those are forged from billets of steel. I've never seen anyone use an aluminum crankshaft and you wouldn't need to hot forge aluminum.
aluminum doesn't glow like that when hot I think you're right
Forged billet...sort of an oxymoron, don’t you think?
Yep, no one's using aluminum for cranks
Has anyone here drove the 2017 xd s ? I'm looking at one tomorrow and wanted to know if it was worth buying help!
sun roof? we don't need no stinking sun roof.
So how much is gas model vs the diesel?
5000$
Nissan doing is an incredible job here .
But i think most of its market are the conservative who build up a very long lasting loyalty that can last for 20-50 years and the most important is reliability because many truck consumers build their decision on what truck should they buy on a financial calculations , and they are not welcoming new tech all the time for example GMC and Chevrolet did not change their trucks much in 2014 model year because their customers don't like big changes .
This market is the hardest to break , take it from a consumer in the hottest city in the world "Kuwait" where our environment is unforgiving to all kind of cars.
on my 3rd year of ownership of a nissan patrol like the one you had a look at a while ago and putting 60k miles so far .
If that engine has an aluminum crankshaft it ain't gonna last. Don't you mean a forged steel crank!?
yeah , he's screwed up
needs a pan sunroof
Total miss by Nissan for not offering a sun roof in the platinum/SL levels...I really would like would but I'll wait for the 2017 and hopefully there will be one added...as for the use I think the truck between the 1500/2500 is good sell. I would use it for a camping trailer and hopefully won't be limited with the towing weight. I would like to see this Titan XD gas truck vs the Ram 2500 6.4 engine...
Yeah I remember now what the last generation F150 looked like, just not as ugly as the new Titan
panoramic sunroof is preferable!
nissan looks like it's starting to beat the big three
+Erick Ramirez or at the very least a viable option to consider....with all the recalls with the big three I am looking for change and I am no longer brand loyal....
lmn222002 this big rugged truck is way more luxurious than dodge chevy and ford
i drive 2014 F150 Fx2, live in Alabaster, Al. Once a week i pull a 1100 lb zero turn or 700 lb atv on tandem axle trailer. Overall i don't pull often and not more 3000lb. If i bought a camper or a boat i would definitely consider some truck between 1500 to 2500. But unfortunately i don't like Nissan's products at all. Plus they don't hold value and have problems with reliability. Particularly, the Titan's dashboard is ugly and looks outdated. I drive 30 miles a day and have seen only second Titan yesterday since they started selling the new version. I bet they don't sell much.
have you seens fords dash with that tiny screen
put a panoramic roof in it
Why does he have to move his hands so much?
Why not?
City slicker reviewing a truck.... hmmmm. How about stopping at that farm that impressed you and asking the farmer to test drive and review for a blind honest review from someone that knows a farm truck the way he needs?
I think Nissan cheapend this vehicle up which makes no sense. Half of the lights in this thing are LED and the other half are incandescent. Why wouldn't you make them all LED?
I would never, and I mean NEVER, buy a truck or any V8 with an aluminum crankshaft.
Can not be aluminum
Jesus people, it was a mistake.
oh, a 2009 F150, nice. also XD is a terrible trim package name, looks like an emoji.
You sound like my dad who bought one. XD is not a different trim package, it is actually a different truck with a different frame
I drive a 2003 dodge 2500 quadcab Cummins 4x4 longbed, WHY? cause i know the drivetrain will last me a million miles if I treat it right, and I know i can get 20 mpg driving 75mph+ on the interstate. The truck is very affordable to own, and any shade tree mechanic like myself can fix 90% of the issues these trucks have. I dont own a newer Truck because I like to spend my money on my family, my Truck is a tool for me to use, its purpose is to take my family where ever we chose to go, and get us back safely. I will not have a $700+ monthly payment on a vehicle that cant do anything better than my old 2003 can do. I will never understand HOW the truck market has gotten this out of hand. Base model trucks over 40 GRAND. ridiculous!! I see these reviews like this one talking about The "usable" power in town, What??? and telling me about the Stitching on the DASH. NISSAN like the others have Polished a turd, and doubled its price and served it up to the public with Smoke and mirror bullshit ads. And the Sad part is that crap will work, just like it has for the big 3. I realize i am in the Minority here, but do me a favor, consider this, Do a review against a new truck( any brand) and a 15yr old truck with the same options and put them through there paces. Then at the end judge these trucks and their TRUE worth to the MIddle class man that is your viewing audience. Thank you.
I had 3 cummins dodges before I bought my titan. Loved the cummins. The truck body was junk. made in mexico I think. High Diesel prices drove me to the titan with 9500GVW . it pull anything I need to pull in a 1/2 ton truck. Got 100K miles and the only repair was a new starter. Under the intake , I might add. satisfied.
cheap looking
+clovis myers Funny you say this by looking at videos and photos on the internet.
I want to like the new Titan, but I think it's just too damn ugly.
all look nearly the same to me.
But it's ugly.
