  • Nissan's latest Titan now comes in two forms. The regular Titan which is a 1/2 ton truck and new diesel Titan XD which should be thought of as a 5/8ths ton truck. This is the diesel tow vehicle that drives like a 3/4 ton but is priced like a top-end 1/2 ton.

    Great review! The XD is a really misunderstood truck; it’s almost unfair in a way to compare it with both a 1500 & 2500. Sure; there are gas 1/2 tons that will out accelerate and tow similar amounts, but the XD weighs nearly a ton more, and will offer a more stable experience at or near it’s capacity. If compared to a 2500, it’s got similar capabilities of big 3 diesels from 10 years ago. It’s an adequately powered truck that won’t match the power of a bigger diesel, but will ride smoother and provide a better experience when worked hard compared to a 1/2t.

    2017 gas XD sv 2x4 crew cab owner here. Absolutely love it. I get 20 - 21 mpg on the highway to and from work at 65 mph with a few aggressive passes around big rigs both ways. If I’m running late and drive over 80 mph, then I see 15 mpg, which seems to be the standard mpg on streets no matter how passively you drive (I t’s a big truck). The gas engine has a lot of power. There’s no doubt it can get up to speed when needed, but I do find myself using the manual shifter occasionally to guarantee necessary thrust because the transmission seems to always want to reach 7th gear - even at only 40 mph.

    Great review. Brand loyalty is for fools. Buy what you like. I drove one of these the other day, in the Pro4x model and was impressed. I too found the acceleration to be a bit of a drag but overall, it was a solid truck and if in the market picking between a ford with the ecoboost, the chev with the 6.2 or the ecodiesel, i'd prob pick this, cummins, great transmission and similar fuel economy to the larger v8's.

      it's still a Japanese truck, they make about 70% of the money in Japan. it's the same way with Toyota. the American economy only makes about 30% of profit. they have to make about 70% of profit, because there money has less value than American currency. they build there trucks designed for American roads. GM and Ford use alot of foreign parts, but we make about 70% in profit, because of the badge name but they still make about 30% because of foreign parts.

    Very comprehensive review (for once). It bothers me that you have a problem with the acceleration and fuel mileage. The curb weight and hp rating simply needs to be fed with fuel. A truck is a workhorse and should not be confused with a compact car. A 2000 lb payload puts this truck above and beyond.

    It seems like a solid truck, but I'm not sure Nissan has come up with a formula here that is particularly compelling. Other than price it seems you would be better off with a 3/4 ton offering from the competition. The dealers don't seem to be particularly sold on it either as you rarely see more than a couple of them on the lot even though it has been in production long enough that numbers should be quite a bit higher than that.

    The problem Nissan has is that you can buy a Ram 3/4 ton 6.7 Cummins for same price and the Ram is a much better riding truck, has larger nav screen, has nice LED lights, awesome gauge cluster and so on. Also the Ram gets better mileage and has a better resale value. So in saying that, a 5/8's truck is not needed.

      You must not have watched the video as he said the same equipment on a dodge was $7000 more.
      Here in west Michigan when I bought my xd it was $8300 more for the dodge.
      My trailer when loaded is 8200 lbs so no need to send extra money on something that pulls 17000 lbs.
      Also the $ 7000 we saved buys 2333 gal of fuel at $ 3 a gal.
      2333 gals times 15 mpg is 35000 mile worth of fuel. Thats 3+ years of driving for us.

    Alex has done a very, very diplomatic job in saying this Titan is neither here nor there. The fuel mileage is deplorable for a Diesel with a 10 mpg penalty over the Ram Diesel without a commensurate increase in power or capability. The mileage is not much better than a gas V8 with similar power. This is a half-baked effort from Nissan. The new Ford F-150 Diesel will put the final nail in Nissan's full size pickup truck coffin. As regards the Aisin transmission, Aisin is effectively a branch of the Toyota empire . With a Cummins engine and a Toyota transmission Nissan's inadequacy in pickup expertise is painfully obvious. Finally, any three ton pickup that can't carry a full sheet of plywood is a disgrace. PS the Jag on the trailer was a hilarious inside joke.

    • @kipamore
      @kipamore Před 8 lety

      Good points. Keep in mind too that you can buy a fuckload of gasoline for the $4000 price premium of the diesel over a Hemi or a SBC or a Coyote. Im too lazy to do the payback math, but its in the years Im sure. Not to mention the repair costs which are easily double on the diesel. And the fact that for a low volume oddball like this Cummins, you will probably be forced to go to the dealer for service. Whereas any corner shop can work on the gas engine.

      I'm glad Dodge or Ram decided not to pursue this engine after their bankruptcy, I was originally slated for the Ram 1500. Besides that I have looked at the Titan and I find it a very nice truck with lots of options but I think a lot of the problems lie with it is that it's history isn't known which will scare some people away from buying otherwise a nice truck.

      +MrMike25896 Tiny tiny numbers of people buy electrics/hybrids. Of those, well over half buy Priuses. • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  Před 8 lety +1

      +weirdshibainu The real trouble is range, especially when towing. A battery the size of the Model S (1,400 lbs) would not get you very far in a truck that was capable of towing 10,000 lbs well. Based on relative efficiency you'd be looking at well under 100 miles of range.

    • @kipamore
      @kipamore Před 8 lety

      +weirdshibainu The fact that a pickup truck has a flat bed doesnt really help in any useful way. The teslas battery IS the floorpan of the car. And you can make the battery any shape you want, more or less. Now that I think about it, a pickup is at a disadvantage because the beds are generally high up off the road, whereas a car can have a lower CG.

    • @TheTruthAboutCarsPage
      @TheTruthAboutCarsPage Před 8 lety

      +MrMike25896 The costs involved would be a killer. Adding $20,000-$40,000 on top of an expensive pickup truck for 100 miles of range or less when towing or hauling would be a tough sell. Look how poorly hybrid trucks sold.

  • @lonespartan31289

    its funny that they claim to be between a 1500 and a 2500 because the F150 can out tow and out haul this truck...obviously this will get better mpg while doing that. Even so, im not sure about the 'value' for this truck

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  Před 8 lety +6

      +LoneSpartan The F-150 is rated for about the same towing and higher payload capacities, but when it comes to "out towing" that's not as cut and dry. The F-150 gets pushed around a great deal more than the Titan XD when you tow more than 7,000 pounds and the Cummins diesel provides more torque, a stronger transmission and more importantly better cooling than the 3.5L twin-turbo V6 in the Ford. Now personally I'd be just fine with my 5,000-7,500 pound towing needs in a F-150 with the 2.7L TT V6 but that doesn't mean it is a superior tow vehicle to the Titan. The Titan has been designed in this regard like the F-250-/2500 trucks with heavier duty components, higher cooling abilities, etc.

    • @lonespartan31289
      @lonespartan31289 Před 8 lety

      +Nissan TitanWarrior - Strangely I read your comment as "tries to be the jackoff of all trades" and thought you were spot on...then my eyes focused properly....;-)

    Its a shame! These new trucks are sooo expensive and are built like shit! All of them.

    Why the hell would you buy a truck? With that fuel economy and the ride quality, if you aren't consistently towing large amounts of weight you are WASTING money

    I'm prepared to be harsh. What the hell is Nissan thinking, other than "it will cost more to idle the plant than it will to put out this half-asses effort". This truck seems to have nothing going for it. It looks like an F150....from 6 years ago. It brings nothing class leading to the table. It'd be a killer tow rig...if it was Taco sized. It'd be a killer off roader...if it weighed 2000 lbs less.
    In a word: cynical. Its a cynical effort to cash in on the few truck buyers who hate American brands.

    Not only are these trucks ugly, but they're practically useless. Just get an 09-14 F150, looks better and close to the same capability.

      I can’t say I would ever get an F150. Ford inflates their figures and everyone’s racist neighbor has one. I’d rather have something that is different than every other white guy on the road. The F150 has a bunch of fancy electronics and is more of a toy truck than a real truck.

    Basically a 3/4 ton truck from 10 years ago but with worse MPG and almost double the price. Pointless truck.
