  • Every now and then there's always that one device that brings some crazy features you really want to love and just can't, which means you'll end up forgetting they exist after a week, all the while realizing that the device is just fine without them. That's the story with the LG G8 ThinQ. There's just so much about this phone that's cool, and none of it has to do with the gimmicks. I'm Jaime Rivera with Pocketnow and this is our full review.

      The G8 can be had for $20 per month for 24 months on Verizon, and for what seems to be a cross between an S10e and an S10 it's insanely tempting but its dated front panel design and software are making me lean towards an S10e

  • @hoppysport2872
    @hoppysport2872 Před 5 lety +30

    Thank you for an excellent review...and not wasting time on the not-ready-for-primetime Air Motion ridiculousness. I bought the G8 for $619 on T-Mobile, then received another $310 off because I added a much-needed line. Total cost was $309. How is that not a great deal compared to the Galaxy s10?
    I put the G8 next to the s10 and the brightness was comparable. Will revisit that when I return to a T-Mobile store. The camera blows away my s8 Plus. The Quad DAC is exceptional. Like many, I consume a lot of audio and the difference between the G8 is night and day. I listen to a lot of podcasts, and the Quad DAC is so much better.
    I had never owned an LG phone before, just Samsung and iPhone. The G8 gives more than those two brands. Oh, there is a 2-Year warranty, allowing me to ditch my $8 T-Mobile warranty insurance. That $92 a year saved.

    • @hoppysport2872
      @hoppysport2872 Před 5 lety +4

      @@troytruong8246 The G8 is my first LG phone. Before this, I always tic-tocked between the iPhone and Samsung. What stands out is how Samsung and LG share similar software features...with LG being far richer.
      For what I care about--and I'm not a hard-core gamer--the LG is the true star. The Quad DAC is transformative. The haptic engine is so precise and focused. I type a lot and actually send dozens of emails a day for business, and I can do 100 words-per-minute using SwiftKey combined with the haptic engine.
      The camera setup is night and day compared to my previous Galaxy s8 Plus...and that was a great camera.
      The most negative and over-discussed feature is Air Motion. Who cares? It's future-tech and might perhaps be fully-realuzed with future updates. The facial recognition is spectacular and lightning-quick, as is the fingerprint reader.
      In a week with the G8, I keep discovering new things...and for the price I paid, it's the deal of the year. I bought it from T-Mobile for $619. I then added a much-needed line, and that brought an additional, immediate $310 off. Total cost was $309. I sold my mint condition Galaxy s8 Plus (it had just been replaced under warranty for fee by T-Mobile) to a friend for $350, complete with box and unopened accessories. So I basically traded the Galaxy s8 Plus for the G8.

    I actually like the G8 more than the S10. Had the Galaxy for about a month now and the G8 for a little over a week.. It's smoother, love that the fingerprint scanner is still there and in every low light situation I've tested, it performs better than my S10+ and iPhone Xs. It's not bad at all. It's biggest flaw is that it's LG and some things are just ugly.
    Air motion never works for me either when I try to show it off, but hand ID is much smoother for me. But I have all three biometric options set up--one of them will get it done. Lol.

    Love my g8 so far. Upgraded from a v20. There are some things im missing but overall the experience has been nice. Its crazy this even has to be pointed out buttttt; you still have knock code, tap to wake and to sleep, FP sensor, quality face unlock (that mirrors my surfacebook), and hand id. Every reviewer acts like hand id and hand motion are forced upon you when you use this phone. Obviously this is the furthest from the truth. I literally glance at my phone to see the time and it unlocks, it's crazy sensitive. I have only been able to use my fp a few times because the face unlock is that quick. I'd rather have more than one way to unlock then be forced to unlock in only one way. The speaker does have its moments though where it is too quiet but overall its a solid phone and very snappy at everything so far.

I switched from apple back to android after years and this phone blows my iphone out of the water in the speed AND camera dept. Only negetive I've had was all the settings - its getting almost overwhelming on android 9 but I managed. The sound hands down is #1 in the industry - that quad 32bit dac is freaking insane - like on par with my Asus STRIX Soar sound card in my gaming PC. Switched away from a V30 because it was too big for my hands and badly manufactured oleds fail at very low brightnesses. Now the g line is using OLED and the size keeps growing. I really hope a small LG flagship comes out soon, because a small phone with a good DAC apparently doesn't exist.

    I think this hand gesture is pretty good, but not for every moment use. people always commenting about it being bad but it's up to a certain situation. every reviewer always use it when they hold the phone. so they always think it's unnecessary to had this. but think about this, when your phone is at the table and you want to unlock or change the volume, the hand gesture is way to go. I don't really need to unlock the phone using the fingerprint reader that at the back of the phone and pick it up. Or pressing the button for volume. it's way easier to do it like that. or even when your finger is dirty (even thou you can do it using google assist). but it's a nice gimmick but not for every moment use. you just need to look at different point.

    I agree with this Review but you have to consider that price can be different from one region to another, there can be deals and price drops. I really wish LG would take care of its software. It has some things I like, for example, the camera manual mode and the audio controls for music, those are amazing. The rest is just ok or bad. I even like EMUI more with Nova Launcher than LG's UI with Nova. The gallery and files managment app are a mess, you have to press the trash button then you can select what you want to delete instead of long press to enable multiselection, for example. The autobrightness setting is weird, it stays at 11% brigthness when I am in a completely dark room and I have to manually ajust it to zero, why? Then when I'm in a not so dark room it goes down to zero, WTF. Maybe is just a bug but I have enconuter with more of those tiny bugs that I would like to. The face unlock in my G7 is trash, even when I've trianed many times it doesn't work properly. I'm totally fine with that, I can use the FPS, I prefer it but why can't LG get the basics right? Other example, if you choose to hide the notch, it only works in the LG's UI, if you use Nova Launcher it doesn't work at all and the same happens when you launch other apps, why? Ok, I can live with that kind of bugs, but I didn't have those kind of software issues with EMUI and I could just make up for the stetics with Nova. In LG's case, I still find software issues.

    I think air gestures and z camera are more of a proof of concept for other lg electronics like tv's .. Imagine sitting and doing everything by hand movements .. That's why lg is trying out something new and i praise lg for it .. Execution is very bad and needs more to be desired but that doesn't mean lg is restricting to do their z camera way only .. They are like a feature set which lg is providing so i'm more glad to take that .. Rather than like apple restricting users to use only face id and removing the finger print sensor ..
