LG G7 ThinQ Review: AI is just part of the story | Pocketnow

  • The smartphone world is kind of tough for companies like LG. Two years ago the company was one of the pioneers of the concept of dual cameras, which most phones have today. Last year the company pretty much brought us the first 18 x 9 aspect ratio, which most phones have today.. So being such a pioneer, why is it that LG doesn't have the popularity that it deserves? Maybe it’s the fact that all this innovation needed some of the iteration and refinement that we finally get to see today.. I'm Jaime Rivera with Pocketnow, and this is our review of the LG G7 ThinQ.

    Don't undersell the Quad DAC. It might take high impedance headphones to truly appreciate but it powered even my crappy backup headphones better than any phone I've ever used (and this is coming after using the HTC 10 - I use an LG V30: Same DAC). Also I can't go back to bluetooth in the car, the difference is noticeable and really good.

  • @ldfrazi
    @ldfrazi Před 6 lety +80

    I had the G6 and one thing I could never stand was the UI. I'm sorry it just straight up sucks. I like this phone but if I can get more RAM and almost stock Android from OnePlus for a cheaper price I'll go that route. LG needs a wow factor to stand out from other companies

    • @karandev9316
      @karandev9316 Před 6 lety +14

      lamar frazier uhmm. LG has better Cameras, speakers, a DAC, IP rating. Choosing OP6 just for "more RAM" is not a good decision (Seeing how you'll never use the 8GB of memory to its full capacity). I'd say wait for HTC U12+ or the Pixel 3 (for that sweet stock android.)

    • @pigletsquid7718
      @pigletsquid7718 Před 6 lety +6

      There is a 6gb ram version of the G7. "but, OnePlus has 8gb version"... Those extra 2gb will literally make fck all difference. The difference between 4gb and 6gb is already pretty negligible. I can't same I'm a huge fan of the default theme, but can't you just change that? O_o

    • @karandev9316
      @karandev9316 Před 6 lety +2

      Piglet Squid changing the theme will not give change its OS. Stock android is better because it provides bare minimum which you can tweak to your preference without sacrificing its smooth User experience. But I do agree with you, making a decision over "MoawRe" RAM is ridiculously hilarious.

    • @detechie
      @detechie Před 6 lety +2

      lamar frazier 6GB RAM is standard. 8 GB RAM is obviously overkill. LG's software is biggest let down. Why you should buy an LG phone? 2 reasons, that 32 bit Quad DAC & that Wide angle lens.
      Without wide angle lens, there is not much to say about LG's camera. It's good but not great like iPhone X, Pixel 2 or S9+. But it's obviously far better than OP6 camera.

    • @madslls384
      @madslls384 Před 6 lety +2

      lamar frazier agreed the UI alone is what's holding me back from this phone, plus not having 6 gb of RAM on US version is stupid

  • @judecarloninokotolentino4479

    I dont know why LG has lessen the FOV of the wide angled camera. 🙄
    if it is about distortion then you can use the main camera.
    or atleast include super wide angle option on the wide angle camera, like the front camera on the v20 which crops the wide angle to make it more natural FOV.

My biggest problem however, is the price is just far to steep for what it's providing. $750 dollars provides you with a multitude of much more impressive smart devices. I'm going to see how the price on this fluctuates in the future then maybe consider jumping on it.

    I think LG lost it's way and is confused about offerings. Also suffering from chinese competition, but mostly confused about what it should offer.
    I remember the G line being a reasonably good phone for a fair price not that long ago.
    G4 was one of it's biggest successes if I'm not mistaken, had a fairly good price and specs for the time, and all that. Huge success in emerging markets at least, if I'm getting the model right - not sure.
    For some reason, LG started ramping up the price in more recent generations, and chinese manufacturers started encroaching and getting ground.
    For at least the past couple of generations LG G series sounds like an upper middleground no one is asking for. It's priced at a premium, it doesn't have much to offer over the competition, and still has lower specs than the inevitable V series. The G6 at least had a weird tall screen that was the most memorable thing about it... this one seems to have nothing to differentiate itself.
    I like the idea of having a regular plus wide angle scheme for camera, but that doesn't count when stabilization and video is inferior.
    I commend LG for investing more in stuff like pro features for photo and video, plus audio which is something most other companies overlook, but it's always offerings with caveats. Like, you have all these extra manual controls on the V20 camera, but it seems auto mode is inferior to almost any other smartphone in the category.
    It has top of the line DACs for headphones, but the speakers are nothing to write home about. Almost all features feel that way... one step forwards, two backwards. Screen is gorgeous but it isn't OLED. There's some meek trend following that at most attends the basics. RAM is ok but other brands offer more. Android version is recent, but not the latest. They did something with AI, but not much. They did away with their second screen to follow the notch trend, so there's nothing special about it. The UI is fine for people who like it or are used to it, but for the most part it looks dated and offering nothing new.
    Last few enticing things about LG phones I remember all went away too. It was one of the last brands to offer a top of the line phone with removable battery. It was one of the few that used materials like leather and texturized backs. It was one of the last competitions to Samsung's Note line offering a stylus in one of it's phones. Now it's mostly meekly following trends, but not quite getting there. It's kinda sad.
    The death blow comes with the price. It wouldn't be a problem to offer a featureset like that with a modest price... 400 bucks, 500 bucks. But at close to 750, it makes zero sense. That's a price point that the market is expecting everything to be on par with the best, plus some very enticing extra feature. And LG is not only not offering any enticing extra feature, most of the features it's offering that follows the trend all have some problems attached to it.
    www.slashgear.com/t-mobile-lg-g7-thinq-price-is-unbelievable-21531385/
    I hope the brand manages to reverse this and go over this slump. But honestly, I don't think they are gonna sell any better than the previous couple of generations. And I'm not sure if V40 will have enough to fare better than V30 too... few rumours and speculation so far, but nothing out of the ordinary.

    Is the camera stabilization better on manual mode vs regular mode? The V20 and V30 have great cameras until I start walking. Stabilization is not good on both phones on either setting.

    I feel like One Plus 6 got announced after this but still took the internet by storm because of MARKETING and price point. LG always drops the price on their phones after a month of no sales. If OP6 was selling in carrier stores, it would seriously be over for LG.

    They even technically had the first notched phones in the LG V10 and LG V20 technically speaking, before Essential and Apple.
    They even had the first all touch phone the prada before the iPhone, and curved oled before samsung on a smartphone, and with their google phones, we got face id, great camera tech, not to mention wide angle and quaddac pro amp.
    But the big two just copy and rifine them and get all of the credit.

    lg has all the tools, they just need to appeal to consumers and find something to differentiate themselves again. the wide camera, manual camera and hi quality audio jack are good, but there lack of a second screen in the v series really pushed people away. Maybe they can beat everyone with superb battery life, a number of programmable buttons or a screen that beats samsung. They are so close yet so far.
