A Race Against Time At Eagles Nest Sinkhole | Judi Bedard Rescue Attempt
On September 11, 2005, Judy Bedard and her partner Rudy were diving in Eagles Nest Sinkhole enjoying the clear blue underwater paradise. The bright limestone walls stood out to them as they descended slowly together. Being experienced divers, they had a clear plan and route to follow.
The pair continued to descend until they reached 130 meters where the entrance room split in two directions. At this moment, a technical issue was noticed with Judi’s oxygen tank. Over the next 30 minutes, a race against time began. Creating one of the most intense but rewarding cave diving stories known. This is the story of Judy Bedard

There was obviously no safety plan. I'm sorry to say that, but it's true. I was a professional pilot for my career, and there are people that could care less about their safety briefing and the use of seatbelts, or liferafts, or anything else I thought pertinent for the safety of the flight. They were simply obstinate.

At first I thought, “climbers must have insane mental endurance to climb past corpses”. Then I realized they are literally walking in a dead man’s path. Willingly following the same trail that has killed people. That is not impressive. That’s absolutely crazy, like *actually.* Why can’t they stick to breathable, rescuable mountains? 5,000m mountains maybe? WAYYY less dangerous. The Grand Canyon has some amazing sights. Still horribly dangerous, but you wont suffocate and die. Mount Bona looks like it could be an adventure!

This is an update posted on Matt Eakin's GoFundMe page after the recovery attempt: July 18th, 2023by Danielle Bonnington, Organizer The following has been very difficult to write, hence my delay. Despite the most incredible efforts of the team in Pakistan, Matthew’s body was unable to be recovered and buried in February, despite our great hope and the incredible efforts of the team. The great mountain K2 has decided to keep Matthew. The avalanche and amount of snow that covered his body after his accident almost a year ago was too significant. It was simply impossible under the circumstances to find him. It was all so devastating for the team at K2 Base Camp, for our family, and for Matt’s closest friends. Safety was the highest priority at all times on the expedition, as it was for Matt on any expedition he was involved with. He would have wanted the team to be safe. I have complete faith and respect in the incredible skill and leadership of the team and its members, and that they all made the right decisions at the time. Each of the team members volunteered to undertake this expedition. That they offered this is a testament to Matt’s character and his relationships. We are just so humbled by their incredible selflessness. They didn’t all know each other (other than via Zoom) before meeting in Pakistan, and some didn’t even know Matt. He was known as a ‘master of connection’ and he connected them for this common goal. They will be forever linked to each other and to our family. The team held a beautiful ceremony at K2 Base Camp near the Gilkey Memorial, and placed a memorial plaque in an inspiring location, overlooking the Baltoro glacier and Broad Peak (which Matt had summitted in 2019). The plaque was rubbed with Australian soil, and sand from his beloved Bronte beach. It was also draped with prayer flags, an MDU shirt, and eucalyptus leaves from our garden. We remain forever grateful to Matt’s Wingmen, along with the incredibly dedicated local trekking team and porters, for all that they have done. We are particularly grateful and relieved that everyone in the team was able to return home safely to their own families. We also filled with gratitude to you all for your continued support, both financial and emotional. This expedition certainly could not have happened without you and your generosity. I have received touching messages from so many of you. Matt has connected us also. As we approach 12 months since Matt’s death, we are all moving through the many stages of our grieving and learning to live without him in our lives, whilst continuing to honour him and share our memories. We are hopeful that one day soon Matt will be uncovered and buried quickly and respectfully. Again, my apologies for not sending this message much sooner. With ongoing gratitude, Danielle and family

I could never leave my children and risk my life for a hobby. When you become a parent your life changes. I understand the sherpas and porters that are living on pennies a day looking for a better life for their children. Food and shelter cost money and you get the most money doing the most dangerous jobs. But I don't understand someone doing this for "fun" and leaving their spouse and children. It feels very selfish. I can appreciate the arguement that people knew who they were marrying when they got married but things should change when you have children under 18. That child isn't just relying on that parent for love and guidance but also financial support. FYI: I use to sell life insurance. Most life insurance companies won't cover you if you do extreme sports or life threatening hobbies. Such as flying, hang gliding or sky diving. Additionally if you did somehow get life insurance, most won't cover deaths like this.
