- In 1974, over 170 climbers were going to be attempting to climb Lenin Peak. This included an expedition of 8 female climbers...but they were underprepared, ill-equipped, and failed to follow instructions. All of these factors led to the most notorious woman-led expedition in mountaineering history....This is their story.

The contest of "being the first.." of anything, is always an invitation for disaster.. goals are skewed and decisions are clouded
Hell yeah. I was just looking for something to watch and ur video showed up like a gift.
How was your comment posted 10hr ago when the video only came out 31mins ago
my was 10 hour later
Music is tastefully done, allowing for non-disturbed or no stress watching. Thank you very much!
All I know about mountaineering is from watching videos on CZcams, but it seems as if once in the grip of altitude sickness most people die even if they make it to a camp. I don’t wish to appear insensitive, however I don’t see the nobility in dying just to stay with someone who is GOING to die. People who take on such dangerous pursuits have to take responsibility for the inherent risk that’s involved INCLUDING death. I wouldn’t want someone who could save themselves to die alongside of me out of a sense of obligation, and I think most people would feel the same way. When preparing for the climb it should be discussed how situations like this should be handled. The only person I’ve seen beat the odds was Beck Weathers, whose survival was MIRACULOUS, and he made it down on his own!
Beck's story is bananas. That dude had to be part Terminator or something. I totally agree btw. While there's that "I have a duty to my team. I made the bad decision that is killing them." I too would not want someone to risk their life trying to save me or even keep me company till the end. Save yourself. I knew what I was getting into and if I really thought the decision was a bad one at the time and didn't voice my opinion, it's also my fault. People blame the 40 some odd people who passed David Sharp on Everest, but he made bad decisions. Only two canisters of supplemental oxygen, waving off help more than once when he was mobile enough to be saved. The man essentially killed himself and now those people who did try to help, have to live with the knowledge that they "let" a man die when it isn't their fault. They can tell themselves he was his own worst enemy, but they're still going to live with that. Save yourself. My corpsecicle will be fine right where it is.
Gosh this is so tragic
Wow. That was definitely heartbreaking. Even with the Soviet female fighter pilots, they struggled with antiquated equipment. If they were provided the same equipment as their male counterparts, they likely would've had a better chance at survival. But again, hindsight is always 20/20.
The video unfortunately missed out on a crucial part maybe due to time, but Shatayevas team had the gear but it was completely blown away by the chaotic wind....so they had the necessary equipment which proper mountaineers use but they were completely swept away, leading to their tragedy.
@@makarklyuev1317 the video mentioned all that except the gear. Other teams had concerns about their gear and found it antiquated. However, getting caught up in the hurricane winds seemed to have done the most damage.
@@makarklyuev1317 tents werent' suitable for this weather, that's why they were blown away. I've read a book in russian about it from another mountaineer. Other groups were there and survived. And several groups noted inadequate equipment. Another factors may be: the path that was chosen, additional stop (possibly due to sickness), allegedly late communication about sick person (all radio messages written from memories), there are also theories that one woman could've died before the storm and morals were very low.
You the man bro!! Keep ‘em coming!!
It is a sad disaster. The weather is the one thing that can change.
At first it sounds like a case of get-there-itis, but on their terms only, which then developed into a case showing what can happen to mountaineers who absolutely refuses to leave anyone behind.
They had summit fever. As these videos showcased often, mostly with men, that fever can cause fatal hypothermia. Also, taking the optional rest day put them away from the men that otherwise could've rescued them.
@@johnrossford7927Get-there-itis and Summit fever is to me different words for the same thing. They got so focused on achieving their goal that blinders made them ignore everything except what they thought would take them to their goal. But as you said, in the end that also took them one day further away from the other persons on the mountain which maybe could've helped them down.
Thank you for the video I love them ❤
Great story I really like the way you told there story!
Respect that they left no one behind. Very sad
First off, I liked your video because I like hearing your take on these expeditions. Was wondering if you’ve ever watched Archie’s Archives and his story about this subject. You might find it interesting.
Failing to follow instructions is a guarantee of disaster for any project. And why were they underprepared, and without proper equipment? surely they must have been warned about the dangers of this high peak. Sounds like a careless group to me, who were asking for trouble - and they got it.
RIP,,,,,,,, LADIES......
YOU. DID. YOUR. BEST..... SUCH. COURAGE.... 💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥
I just knew there would be comments on the lines of 'women☕️'
As if there arent twice as many videos on here about incidentally men-only groups of hikers facing worse ends
Correct. It was all due to a bad cup of woman coffee. Good call!
THANK YOU!
As soon as I saw the title that they were a women-only group, I knew there was going to be a bunch of beer gut men leaving sexist comments. There's too many insecure men who feel like women having anything to themselves is somehow a threat to men. These women just wanted to have fun together and set a record.
Yep..that's true!
Yup. They kick the bucket the most.
Wicked intro music😂
got farther than i would...as soon as i got there and saw the mountain id say...im not going up there lol
They didn't die because they were women. They died because they were ill prepared in relation to the task at hand.
Yeah, that is called being a woman.
I don't think this is necessarily true, them being women led to them being stubborn about leaving when they had the chance.
They wanted to prove something to the men, that chip on their shoulder cost them their lives.
@@MirandaSinistra you could sense their stubbornness when they were given the reprimand for not calling sooner. I just wonder if things would have been different had they brought better equipment. Guess we'll never know 😐
Humans just love being labelled as so special😮
Amazing and brave!
Polite way of saying it :) Thanks
They made it to the summit, and if not for the terrible weather they would've been fine. Happens to the best of 'em.
It sounds bizarre as the narrator gives the husband of Elvira Shatayeva a .. feminine Slavic surname
Like many all men groups who also died from being unprepared. It is not about sex, it is about being prepared, and lucky. You can do everything right and still die.
Like your videos but the voice is irritating in that it is fast paced and never pauses, so my mind has a hard time absorbing the info.
Thank you so much for this video. I work as a wilderness caretaker in the Adirondacks and I love to see the way you covered women in the mountains 🙏🙏🙏. I am privileged to work in the woods in remote outposts and as a woman I am proud to do it. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
What does being a woman have to do with it?
@@RuminatingWizard if you have to ask you don’t know lolololol
I would’ve saved Elvira
8:10 "Many doubted the women's ability". Doubts confirmed!
Yeah it was the mid 1900s
No matter what ugly looking feminist say, we are the weaker sex.
@@JustTryingToCZcamseven today . The world is not Charlie's angels ....
@@JustTryingToCZcams - ... Mid 1900's ... And what does that imply . Women are weaker, less resilient, always desire a consensus and are too EMPATHIC to be top competitors in a man's world . Mid 1900's is my generation ... I am a 64 years old farmer and arborists and have never crossed paths with a female that can pull my job . I am married to a woman that is exceptional and can out work any woman you prob know ... And she knows not to compete toe to toe with any of our sons and male employees . These women died of idiocy .
Like many men’s 😂😂😂
See what happens when people step out of their lane?
What lane is that exactly?
How ironic thou, tried to show how independent and strong they are and then just died
Female Rightsicles 🥶
they just sit there watching everyone die and do nothing?
I hate to make anything about race and/or sex but some of the comments 😂😂 guys many more men lives unfortunately end in tragedy with these climbs calm dwn
The jokes write themselves 🤣
The real tragedy is that these self serving women put themselves before their children. You have a kid, the welfare of that son or daughter comes first.
Just stop it.People like you who criticize clibers for their huge agos ,havr the same agos, but unfulfilled..You simply dont have a gut to do something like that and "children" is not an obsticle..Its good that they have kids after them otherwise it will be sad,no continuetion.
I bet they washed their hair with the water they had left before freezing to death .
"One that is rarely given to women."
You mean one that is rarely earned by women.
All female team? Good idea.........wait!
Frozen beaver
Why were they all getting sick ? Food poisoning?
altitude sickness as well as severe hypothermia

Ok, gotcha. Thanks
There's a bunch of pandering rubbish in this video
Frozen feminists
Aren’t they all? 🤷
@@EnlightenedRogue24 Definitely cold hearted.
@EnlightenedRogue24 exactly what I came to say
😂😂😂😂😂
@@EnlightenedRogue24nope not if they think trans are women !!!!
If only they had a man with them.
They’d still died like others 🙄
Only if he wasnt in charge
why not pick a fun hobby though?
Same thing I said about make climbers 🙄
@@TriniLush7 male? yea it wasnt a dig at women...even if you make it back down itt doesnt sound very fun and it can cost like 40k$ to have a bad time lol
uh, ya....its about oxegen debt....men climb mountains easier than women..identified at birth😂🎉😂🎉😂
So that’s why a lot of men died? 🖕🏾
"... women's contribution to mountaineering, goes back centuries"? Silly sentence winner!
It's pretty well documented. Hell, one woman reached the top of Mount Ventoux and literally popped a bottle of champagne in the early 1800s.
I heard you climbed 🖕🏾
@@sapphicgeek24 those people was built different back then. They worked out more by traveling in horrible weather conditions at home. Now people are lazy and use vehicles everywhere. Because of that, our bodies are not ready for these horrible conditions now.
For those who keep making misogynistic comments about the women, you do realize the vast majority of the casualties in these videos are men, right? Cut them some slack. They made the same classic mistakes as we saw with the men, and it costed them. Understand it for what it was and let the sexist nonsense go.
Um, ok. Now go make me a sammich. 🥪 👌🙄
No one is going to sleep with you for saying this
They’re too busy glazing men to care 😂😂😂
You're right, many more men do die. Something these women would have known and should have prepared for. Instead they dug their heals in and died for nothing but stubbornness and their own egos.
Mountaineering is the one women’s sport Trans are not trying to take over. 😂
There are many, many points that can be raised about the Soviets being absolute PoS, but gender inequality is not one of them. Trying to apply some American standard to this just makes the entire video feel rather disingenuous.
Nah. If you study the Soviet female fighter pilots, they were some of the most lethal battalions in the air, but took heavy casualties because of their antiquated planes. As much as the Soviets touted equality, there was plenty of lingering sexism. This is just one of many examples.
It was more about forcing women into menial jobs and breaking up family systems.. so brave and equal.. derp..
@@johnrossford7927 If _you_ studied them you'd know they were bombers, not fighter pilots, and they flew those planes because they could fly incredibly slow and not stall so enemy planes couldn't follow them without stalling.
@@Jake-bt3fc those are still fighter pilots. And you actually didn't disprove anything I said, just play semantics. They had more antiquated 'bombers' and suffered higher casualty rates than their counterparts, which they compensated for in their lethality. Stop trying to excuse obvious sexism.
@@johnrossford7927 Fighter pilot means air to air. Bombers are fighting people on the ground.
You're obviously very ignorant on this topic if you think bombers are fighter pilots. Learn a thing or two before you open your mouth next time.
What planes did their male counterparts fly? Do you even know? Why would you give your best regiment the worst planes? Do you think the general was such a comically evil idiot he was trying to sabotage his best regiment to prove men are better and lose the war?
Didn’t have to die but were too foolish to wait and/or accept help bc of her staunch feminism.
99% of anything ever created or invented has been done by a man.
There is much work to do other than creation and invention. Creating something new or inventing something new is a very rare task, and invention or creation is usually the result of a lot of hard work, and requires intelligence and diligence.
Some women achieve certain things.... and that is awesome, but most women want to enjoy life, and for that reason women often do the chores of the world, at home and in the workplace. Of course some women act like princesses and primadonna's, who think they should be handed everything they want for free. Whatever the reality of a particular woman, statistically women rarely creating something novel, and most women usually want an easy life.
That statement only sticks of you are the best at something eg no matter the task/job there is a women out there that can do it faster better beat you or win
The chances of you dying on this mountain is much higher than some women out there
@@lukasbuzz- huh? 🤔
@@EnlightenedRogue24 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Kindly stfu please. You can’t speak on behalf of most women. I can’t even speak on behalf of most women and I am a woman.
It’s a hell of a lot more complicated than “most women want an easy life”. There’s a lot of societal bs to deal with. Yes some girls are like that but I think it’s the loud minority. Also, a man would like an easy life too if they could get it. Many men are too insecure to have their wife make more than they do because of our societal standards and that’s a large part of it. Men should not be forced to be the breadwinner while the wife stays home with the kids, being a househusband should be more acceptable if they want that but it’s really not yet.
I also definitely wouldn’t say 99% of inventions are from men. There are more and more discoveries of how women’s work was taken by men and they got all of the credit.
I know I sound like a crazy feminist but my feminism is actually being equal, not bashing straight white men for existing. Personally, I’m in college for my computer science degree and I plan to have a miserable but well paid job so my bf can do one he enjoys. My job will be from home because I don’t really want to be harassed at work (stem fields are really bad about that)
TLDR: society is messed up and causes stereotypes people are expected to fill
Women. Am I right? 😏
?? 🙄
Woman 4: Half (but it is really 75%) of us have died on this peak..
Woman 11: When do we see the flowers?
Men, am I right? 🖕🏾
More men die doing this you know. We are too fat and lazy to do these expeditions now.
