  • Russian Clumber Nadezhda Oleneva decided to climb Dhaulagiri in 2023, in honor of the 100 year anniversary of the Russian Mountaineering Federation. She was one of the greatest Russian climbers of our generation, trailblazing several new routes on walls and peaks throughout the world....but even small mistakes can have drastic consequences on an 8,000er....This is her story.

    RIP to her. And best wishes to her family and friends mourning her passing. Having said that...climbing without a sherpa or oxygen tanks, above 8k meters...is insanity. And it doesn't really matter that it's the 100th anniversary of Russian climbing, blah blah blah. I'll keep my oxygen tank, thank you.

      Too many comments that don’t apply. She was below 6500 meters at the time. Oxygen is not used at that altitude. Sherpas are not used when executing in alpine style over expedition style by a competent team.

      Dunno how you watch but he clearly says they agreed to get to camp 2 with own pace. 2ng thing is it doesn't matter if it's friend or not - everyone climbing highest mountains is aware mistakes leads to death as no one can help and carrie someone down there.

    I will never understand why people climb these mountains without supplemental oxygen.
    That's asking for brain damage.
    What if she became dizzy and lost her balance ? Could have been prevented with extra oxygen supply.

    Growing up I had many goals but one was to climb the most dangerous mountain.But paths change and I had to learn to skydive.(I love hights) Now I think of this.I have a feeling climbing would have been my last fate too.Prays go out to Nadezhda and her family.🙏🤍

      If they had been 'roped up together' they might all have died. Roping up together on a steep slope has cost countless lives of climbers. But you won't be taught that in clilmb school and countless more lives of climbers will be lost. @@at1970

      If she had an ax ready she most likely would have been able to arrest. Speed over easy terrain, they most likely would not have been roped together even if they were not separated by pace. Unless wind and avalanches were present danger through that area at that given time.
      One pole was found, maybe she did have an ax ready? But most of us are guessing not. She most likely would have arrested herself quickly

    These experienced high altitude climbers are very aware of the chance their next climb can be their last...even if they make no mistakes. They lost friends and sometimes body parts..there must be something in common in their psyche which make them seek this torture of the cold and danger..Anyways..is what they do really a sport..is there competition...does this kind of climbing qualify as a sport?

    The Russian 8,000m + teams used to carry Cyanide and they'd pop one and drop if they realized they had no way out.

    Has most of that footage actually been taken on Dhaulagiri ? And of the route they were on? I understand not necessarily there team. Some of that film looks generic, climbing footage from maybe other routes or mountains to give examples of? Either way. Just interested in more information of there route.
    Footage of the helicopter, was the exact mission looking for her?

    Why is the news all over the place on her? One news channel says she was crushed by falling ice. Another says she fell 500m down a crevasse.
    (That's more likely, but still very inaccurate reporting.)
    The title of this video is WAAAY off about she "fell above 6500 m". She didn't fall out of an airplane.
    She may have been at an altitude of 6500m - at the time she fell. More accurate.

      its not a tragedy that we need to know but its actually very interesting to watch how human psyche has evolved into a comedic rationalization about conquering fears, freedom or even a mystical theme by going into places that humans are not allowed like for example... walking at extreme heights were you can't even breathe...lol... makes me laugh, but anyway...this guy is doing a public service.

    Everyone!!!! Stop with comments about oxygen and Sherpa s. She was below 6500 meters. No oxygen yes or needed.
    She was with a team executing the route in alpine style over expedition style. No Sherpa are used by the team.
    I’m sure she did have an ax, she was on easier terrain and made the decision manage her risk based on her skills with it not in hand Maybe?
    We do not know. Can only assume with her skill level if she was hold it she would have arrested. Especially at her skills level. She could have been blown off trekking path by wind gusts. We don’t know any more details than they found only one pole!

    6:47 "It was Nadia's hiking pole". You don't use a 'hiking pole' on a steep snow slope. In fact...hiking poles are a nuisance and should not be used anywhere.

    Excuse me sir , but Nadia did not need a sherpa guide ! You just chronicled her assents of big walls . Most sherpa dont have the technical skill to climb them . Climbing alone on big mountains has inherent dangers . And even the greats slip and fall ie; Taker and Boeard , Alex Lowe , Anatoly Bokarev ( excuse the spelling ) She died doing what she loved . A toast 🥂

      Woah!!!!! Way out of line ! She’s climbed great Granite big walls and mixed technical rock and ice routes in mountain terrain. Technical difficulties of that route on that 8000 meter peak are way below her skills!
      Because of altitude most routes used on any 8000 meter mountain are only 4 th class. She had achieved proficiency at high level 5th class routes

      You could make this argument for the first pioneers that climbed a mountain no one has ever climbed before. At this point, if a mountain already has a route and multiple expeditions climbing it every year, then it's already well discovered and every climb is purely egotistical. There's no new routes to be discovered, only records to be beaten.

    Climb was to commemorate Russian sports which has lost all credibility due to Putin's insistence on cheating. Heartbreaking thar her fellow Russian climbers would have left her behind during the climb but why am I not surprised given the lack of integrity Russian athletes have consistently demonstrated. She deserved better teammates.

      This was a Russian propaganda mission. I personally much more admire Reinhold Messner and his stance on nationality and mountaineering: "II didn't do it for South Tyrol, I didn't do it for Germany, I didn't do it for Austria. I did it for myself."

      Only males in Russia are subject to conscription and then only for one year. There are roughly four times as many males ages 15-64 in Russia than there are in Ukraine of that age.

    Scare yourself every day. Live outside of your comfort zone often. Push yourself hard. Or live a safe boring life where you never fail. Big mountains are risky - she new tje risks. You will never understand why she climbed if you live a beige life.

      Just because someone doesn't climb inaccessible mountains and choose to endure extreme conditions where one mistake is death, doesn't mean they have beige life. I used to climb when I was younger. There's more to life than extreme sports, ya know?

      Well If you are first, which I doubt, you can give a name for the route you made. Sounds good enough for me. Some of my friends did it, I did not. Mostly I'm on saving side of mountain climbing - you know, save smbd on call. Almost forgot - they meet me as a mountain god. Which I somehow was for them. Heat, food, safety, life again. My pleasure too. Not to mention hours of tense climbing in bad weather with full 35kg sack of safety gear. And never sure if you're on time.

    The mispronunciation of some names is really frustrating. You've got a big audience, and I really don't feel like mispronouncing "pilot Dior" when taking about the "peeloh door" spelt phonetically to help everyone here. It's kinda disrespectful to all these people who have dedicated their life in the pursuit of this lifestyle in which you derive income from their tradgedy.

    I made it to the top of here btw ! Have a picture of myself at top ! I mean sure I just added my face on some guy my size and learned the basic talk about gear and studied the info ! I have a issue however I am in love with a women that thinks I really did it and I have no idea how to handle this 🤷‍♂ I forgot to tell her ! I was lying about it and my African adventures ! I am just a gamer nerd good with software ! Any ideas would be great ! I am not a bad man btw I took over 100k I would have spent attempting to climb this with tickets gear all that jazz and go to support groups and give people in need $ 🤷‍♂ to me that is greatness not spending large amounts of $ to die climbing !
