    I am on my final year as a male student nurse on placement . I am thinking of quitting the course. My mental health has suffered during these years I guess there is still bias towards male nurses or maybe just when you are male East Asian student nurse. They think just because you're being a nice Eastern Asian student you are stupid. People treat you differently and less than students from other nationalities.

      Hello friend. This is so sad to read that you are experiencing this. What I would advise anyone, is to not do something that is making you so unhappy. Life is far too delicate and short. However, you've made it to final year, so clearly you are determined and capable to work through such obstacles which demonstrates that you are not 'stupid or less than others'. You're doing amazingly well to work through such a difficult course, while experiencing such negative things. Have you spoken to staff at the university and in the hospital about your experiences? Regardless of if you decide to leave the course or not, I would urge you to discuss what you are feeling with the people who are responsible for this. I made a video on how to have important conversations that may help you to formulate how you may want to discuss this with this. You have raised very important points of your experiences and we need to learn from them and support you. Please, before you make your final decision, talk to people that need to listen. I'm here for you and rooting for you, whatever you decide and if I can help, please do just shout! Ben

      Hello! Yes they absolutely should discuss this with their university. From what you’ve said that sounds unacceptable. In these situations, it is too easy to give up, but if the student is able to professionally challenge the educator and explain how they are making them feel, the impact they are having on them, and express a way forward, that is the most beneficial way to stay professional and in control. Please pass on my best wishes to the student… Ben

      Hello! :) Thanks so much for reaching out, and I am really pleased to know this helped you somewhat. I am afraid not, I have never worked in private hospitals before, other than working in our private healthcare ward in our hospital. Not much was different really, other than the food was better and staff were a little more available as the patient to nurse ratio was lower so we had a little more time. I suppose the important thing to remember is healthcare is healthcare, no matter the surroundings or environment, the fundamentals will remain; you may just have a different experience in time available to provide care, and perhaps the amount of staff around you. I wish you all the best of luck and do come back and update us on how it went! :) Ben

    Really need some advice! I completed my first year and the beginning of second year but I had to drop out due to mental health reasons. I have now applied for a new university closer to me to study Nursing again, however they said my entry requirements were too low meaning that I would have to do a foundation year. I know I'm more than capable to do the degree as I have done a year already. But can I really go 4 years until I get my degree? I am 22 almost 23, I just feel like my time is running out it probably sounds silly to those who are just getting started at an older age. But I do regret leaving its just the thought of being 27 when I qualify as well as the financial side of it. Any advice pleaseee

    • @TheLondonNurse
      @TheLondonNurse Před rokem

      Hello Saoirse! Thanks so much for reaching out about this. Firstly, good on you for taking the time you needed and deserved for your mental health! What a great advocate you are. Well done you!! And it is great to see you are coming back to healthcare 🥰 No one thinks you sound silly; you are being practical, and you have your own personal situation. The benefit to being older when you qualify will stand you in good stead for having more life experience, so that is always very beneficial (nothing can buy that!)... So ok, if this is the case, that you will take 4 years to do your training and financially would struggle, have you thought about the apprentice route? It is called 'Registered Nurse Degree Apprenticeship' and it is a 4 year pathway...benefit: you get paid! You will also be based in a hospital and so get exposed to so much clinical activity that being 27 and worked for the last 4 years in a hospital... everyone will want you! 🤗 Check it out at the bottom of the page here: www.healthcareers.nhs.uk/explore-roles/nursing/how-become-nurse Very happy to chat more if you need to! I’m a first year nursing student and this has really helped me with one of my assignments, bizarrely one of my ideas to develop was to learn about the most common surgeries ( hip replacements ) and the different types but I was unsure how i would evidence this your poster is a great idea , and will also help improve my skills too, also the admission paperwork and admitting a patient. Was really easy to understand 👍. Thank you

    Thanks for the videos for real, myself being a foreigner and not being totally familiarised with British culture, it helps to understand how hospital settings works here and how we students should be carried throughout our placement. Bless you 👍🏾
