  • In nursing, we are used to busy times in the clinical environment, so how do you get through quiet times on placement as a student nurse? There is so much you can do to spend your time when things are calmer on the wards, and this is important so you don't get bored!
When the ward is quiet, or 'calmer' (as we don't use the word quiet on the ward because we don't want to jinx it) the first thing to be made aware of is not to become complacent, as you will forget things. You may only have one set of observations to complete, along with some medications to give and because your brain is not engaged, it is really likely that you will forget to do these.
You can use your available time on placement as a nursing student to spend time with the families you are looking after to hear about their journey through healthcare. Plan it in with the family, sit down with them, and hear all about their perspective. You can learn so much about healthcare, and learn about what is needed from you in your nursing role to provide patients and service users with the holistic care they deserve; through this, I urge you to reflect and start to build your insight. You might have an assignment due that needs you to look a bit closer at the lived experiences of our service users too.
So I hope this video helps you with some advice on what you can do to get through placement, and how you can get through those quieter times when you are a student nurse in placement.
