- In this video, I have 10 tips and hints to help you handle common difficult situations you may find as a student nurse on placement. This video was a request from a viewer, so if you have a suggestion do leave me a comment on this video, and I will be more than happy to see what I can do to help!
As a first-year student, it can be difficult to know what sorts of situations may crop up that are potentially difficult or challenging. The common difficulties in practice I have come across are;
- doing anything for the first time, because you don't know what to do,
- juggling completing assignments whilst on placement,
- being scared of doing the wrong thing, or making a mistake during carying out clinical skills as a student,
- when the shift doesn't go as planned, and you have to reorganise the shift,
- what to do when a patient or family member refuses care,
- how to say 'no' politely to someone who asks you to do something when you already have tasks to do
- how to handle your first clinical emergency as a student nurse

Do you have any advice for a student working with an educator that is very abrupt that feels like bullying? The placement is 7 weeks and the feedback from educator is negative and wearing. Should the student contact the uni?😢
Hello! Yes they absolutely should discuss this with their university. From what you’ve said that sounds unacceptable.
In these situations, it is too easy to give up, but if the student is able to professionally challenge the educator and explain how they are making them feel, the impact they are having on them, and express a way forward, that is the most beneficial way to stay professional and in control.
