  • Worried about what will be expected of you in placement? Starting your first clinical placement as a student nurse is both nerve-wracking and exciting! In this video, we will discuss how you can learn the most on placement and how you can overcome some of those nerves.
You will start your day off with a clinical handover from the nurse in charge of the previous shift. Nursing handovers can be filled with medical jargon and this can be off-putting, but you can use handovers as a learning opportunity but highlighting any parts you don't understand to then go and learn all about whatever it is. Once you take handover, you will get allocated to a nurse for the shift, and you will plan your shift together. Use a shift planner to do this, and highlight any potential learning opportunities throughout the day. There is so much going on in the clinical environment to learn from, and by listening in handover you will begin to pick up the exciting nursing duties taking place on your shift.
The aim of this video is to relax you into your first-year student nursing placements so you can begin to understand how many opportunities to learn in practice there are.

My course as a student nurse (Child) starts in 2 weeks and I’m so worried. Watching these videos has made me excited for placements but it just the travel. My university is an hour and 15 minutes away from home on a bus. I’m not completely sure which trusts, schools, hospices etc. I will be working in but if the travel takes up to 2 hours, I don’t know how I’ll manage getting in on time 😭

Hello Sam. I am so happy to read that my video has spurred on some excitement! It is a really exciting time, so please don't be worrying about travel for placement until you actually know it is something to be concerned about. The universities have a process for mapping placements for students based on their postcode, and each university slightly differs from how much time they deem acceptable, but it is usually up to 1.5 hours each way as a time frame. However, once you have your placement, you can always go and talk it through with your Personal Tutor - universities are there to help! :) If I can help at all, just comment and let me know!

Yay, this video has gotten me excited about being in placements!! I am a 1st year about to begin student nurse (Adult) and was 13 years ago a student midwife but didnt complete the then diploma... I have therefore experience of being a student on placement but not as a adult nurse. I'm super interested in everything from diabetes to stroke to cancer care but I love just being there for people and helping make someone feel better or smile or just be some small help somehow is priceless. Thank you loads for sharing these tips Xx

First-year student RN here! clinical placement starts in 2 months at a private hospital! do you have any tips or suggestions for going into private health care? this video defiantly helped. Thank you! also subscribed, amazing :)

    • @TheLondonNurse

Hello! :) Thanks so much for reaching out, and I am really pleased to know this helped you somewhat.
I am afraid not, I have never worked in private hospitals before, other than working in our private healthcare ward in our hospital. Not much was different really, other than the food was better and staff were a little more available as the patient to nurse ratio was lower so we had a little more time.
I suppose the important thing to remember is healthcare is healthcare, no matter the surroundings or environment, the fundamentals will remain; you may just have a different experience in time available to provide care, and perhaps the amount of staff around you.
I wish you all the best of luck and do come back and update us on how it went! :)

Hello, please I want to ask this question
My assessor is so tormenting so I have decided not to work with her and I have beg another sister to help me signed my placement document. I just want to ask if this is going to affect me negatively and secondly at there end of my placement how are they going to sign me off. Is my university going to send out any documents for them to sign me off or are my going to leave just like that
    Thank you

    • @TheLondonNurse
      @TheLondonNurse  Před 2 lety

      Hello Lilian,
Thanks so much for reaching out about this. I hope you are ok - it sounds like a tough situation to be going through. To really answer your question thoroughly, I would need to sit and have a proper chat with you and see what has been going on, what led to this situation, and how you've been managing it since. However, from the bits you have told me, it seems that you've been through conversations with staff (and hopefully you've had the university get involved to support you too?) have resulted in you changing your assessor, and so if everything is going smoothly now, there should be no "negative" repercussions; by this I am assuming you mean fail the placement? In situations like this, the only time it leads to a fair fail is when the student is unable to reflect on a situation and take steps to learn from a mistake, or whatever the situation was. Even if you feel you were not in the 'wrong', we can all learn from every situation we are in. I always, still to this day, want to make sure that whatever is going on in my day, that I put my patients first and they feel well looked after and carer for, and that I get to the end of my day treating my colleagues with respect and kindness (even if this is not reciprocated sometimes). Unfortunately, as a student, you are the main show on the stage and people are watching and assessing you...so pull out your A Game and be your best for your patients and team! ;)
Every university is slightly different in their processes of signing students off at the end of placement, but usually this is all completed within your practice learning document, and maybe an addition document called a placement passport, or ongoing achievement record. No additional paperwork is usually sent through from the university to the placement. There are lots of other students so you can imagine how much extra time that would take for the nurses and university staff involved :)
I really hope this has helped a little, and I wish you all the very best for your future placements, and career!
      Ben
