  • Stepping up into the second year as a nursing student can be daunting, especially thanks to the horror stories that you might have heard of, as well as the pressure we put on ourselves naturally. This video aims to introduce you to the reasons why second year is often seen as the hardest 'make or break' year, and provide you with some tips and tricks to overcome these issues - making second year easier and more enjoyable!
First thing; the horror stories are not true - I've been there, and believe me, you will make your own opinions on nursing in second year but it won't be as bad as you might have heard. However, there are reasons why students find the second year tough, and I am here to give you tips and tricks to survive second year as a student nurse.
Pressure might be coming from either the academic work in second year or the clinical expectations of you as a second year student. There is certainly an increase in university work as each year passes, and the pass mark increases with this too. The easy way around this is to ask for help and look at the marking criteria for each module - don't complete an assignment blind! Get organised with your studies and ensure to priorities your deadlines correctly. Stepping into clinical placement as a second year student can be scary but celebrate that you have completed your first year, and also let that be a reminder for you that you therefore already have experience and so you are in a stronger position than you were as a first year student! Reflect on your placements in the first year through reading your first year assessment document and pick up on points that you know you need to improve on, as well as remember the really great bits and hold them with you.
The step-up in clinical skills is inevitable in nursing, the more senior you become, the more complex the care provision. Shadow those people who carry out these skills every day and you will soon get your head around them yourself. The last point is around teaching other people. Through trying to teach something, you will have to understand it more in-depth, and therefore your knowledge base will increase! This process will also help you highlight the areas you are not so familiar with too. Plus, an added bonus; if you succeed and the person learns what you taught - that will make you feel amazing!

Hi Ben, My son is in a nursing (RN) program that is 2 yrs. He said, " they throw a lot of stuff at them everyday", a lot of studying plus he is working part time at a nursing home. His final grade in the first yr. was a 78%. Is there anything I can buy for him that would help him through his second year this fall? Thank you!
