I'm a Tynesider, a singer and guitarist with two main areas of music making. I’m interested in the long tradition of our local Geordie dialect songs and perform this repertoire under the pseudonym - ‘The Blaydon Aces’ or under my own name. As a jazz guitarist and singer, I’m a devotee of the ‘Great American Songbook’.
My style could be described as intimate, understated and natural. I've organised Blaydon Jazz Club since 1984.

Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway journey - 26th June 2024.
The railway's locomotive 'Whillan Beck' hauls the first train of the day from Ravenglass, up the valley, to Dalegarth. It is then turned and prepared for the return trip. This lovely narrow gauge railway is situated in the south west of England's Lake District National Park and is an absolute delight.

I love this song and have worked on playing it for years. I made this informal recording just this afternoon using my mobile. It was composed by Philippe Gerard with French lyrics by Angele Vannier in 1950. Johnny Mercer then wrote the English lyrics that I've used here. I remember first hearing the song sung by a fine local singer Anne DeVere then again on a great album by Sheila Jordan 'Portr...

Tommy Whittle - one of the greats in the lineage of UK tenor sax players. He was such a lovely person and made it so easy for the other musicians. He played marvellously on each of his three visits. Recorded at Blaydon House Sports & Social Club. With Billy Harper (piano), Mick Shoulder (bass), Billy Shield (drums), Roly Veitch (guitar).

Composed by Joe Wilson 1841 - 1875. He was the most prolific of the Geordie songwriters. These old songs give insight into our social history, our dialect and our humour in such a nice way and that is why I'm interested in them. From my album 'Geordie Roots' released in 2003.

On 17th December came the sad news that Anne had passed away. She was married to our great local jazz pianist Billy Harper. They retired to Brittany in 2005. Anne was a lovely, sweet person who was a superb professional jazz singer, a master interpreter of the Great American Songbook repertoire. Here she is singing the blues based 'Black Coffee' at Blaydon Jazz Club accompanied by Billy (piano)...

On this evening our pianist Bill Harper recorded the trio using a Sony Walkman recorder. This song was composed in 1935 by Arthur Johnston & Sam Coslow. Our intro/ending owes a lot to a great version by the late Dave Frishberg, on hi...

Super film - Like !
Thank you.
This is really good footage it gives a great insight into great sunny days of the past. A lot of families from Pomeroy settled there and Elsie Daly used to bring the horses over to sell. I'm not sure did they sell them over the the course of the festival or just in general. Does any one have a video of the races?
Hello Sean. Thanks for your comment. That's interesting about Pomeroy, I never knew that. Somewhere along the way I've seen a very short movie clip of the actual races, only a few seconds of very grainy cine. I've just been searching for it on CZcams to no avail. I think it must be a very small part of some longer video. If I find it I'll let you know. Best wishes. Roly.
That must have been loads of fun. Beautiful train and countryside.
We love the place and often go there. This time we were lucky to have lovely weather.
quite beautiful, thankyou for sharing
Thank you. I'm glad you liked my version. It's such a lovely song.
Many thanks,Roly. Not your usual Epi.Broadway.Sounds really good.
Thanks Trevor. It's a nice instrument and I've been playing it quite a bit at home lately.
I'm always drawn first to the music, as it seems to me that if that's no good I can't then focus on the lyric, but I do appreciate the words, too. The lyricists of the Golden Age were true craftspeople! Mercer was of course one of the best, a master of the bucolic. I read that Lester Young liked to know the words, where applicable, to the songs he played, as he felt it helped him to better interpret the song, and this of course is true, particularly in playing a ballad as an instrumental. Your appreciation of this poignant standard is so apparent -- beautiful treatment!
Thank you very much. It's such a lovely song. I've read that about Lester Young.
It's nice to hear this 20 plus year recording. I was very likely in the audience at the Nine Pins that night!
Thanks very much Alan, those Ninepins sessions were very enjoyable. It ran for about two years. There are four more songs uploaded from that same recording if you've not already heard them. Roly.
There was never a better time than when I was walking Max up the Summerhill - those were the days
I've good memories of times spent there too. Best wishes. Roly
got some photos of underground there
Hello. If you've not already done so you may wish to contact Val Scully about your photos. She has just published a lovely book about Blaydon Burn (The Wheel of Time) and is always looking for new material. You can make contact via her website. I'm sure she would be very interested. www.valscully.co.uk/
My Canadian wife never knew this song was from my native land
Hope she enjoyed this version. Best wishes Roly
Beautiful track
Thank you. Glad you liked it. Best wishes. Roly.
Lovely version of a great standard. Really great that you are uploading these rare tracks of one of the UK's top tenor saxophonists.
Thanks Colin. A lovely guy and he played great for us.
I sound so posh even though im a true geordie but this changes that
Once a Geordie always a Geordie. Best wishes. Roly.
Very nice that. Thanks ( a blaydon lad in Australia)
Cheers. I've happy memories of those days.
That was beautiful, lyrical playing, and a lovely tone, from Mr Whittle. This clearly was a mutually inspiring session.
Yes, Tommy played great on all three visits to our club. Happy memories of those times.
Many thanks.Great.
Cheers Trevor. Happy memories.
Happy memories
Me too. Such a shame the old town wasn't kept and just renovated.
Av, still got me Geordie accent, nae body is ganna tell me te speak proppa ,if yi divvint like it bugga off.🤣
Aa quite agree hinny.
What a cute tune this is and how charmingly you interpret it -- marvelous guitar work and vocal. It's so true that these songs from now going on a couple of centuries ago provide a vivid glimpse of their times -- and they deserve to be remembered.
Thank you. Yes a nice song typical of Joe Wilson. He wrote a lot of material (and a book with the quaint title 'songs and drolleries') and composed what is still one of the great local favourites 'Keep Your Feet Still Geordie Hinny'.
Just gorgeous, thank you 🙏🏻
Wow, thanks for such a nice comment. Roly.
@@BlaydonAces merely stating a fact. Brilliant! You know it! You’ve reminded me to listen again.
My dad sings this!! 🥰
Hi Carla. It's a great song and was very popular in its day.
Many thanks Roly.I think I now qualify to be in the aad hat brigade.
Me too, Trevor.
A very fun song, with a timeless theme! Your playing and vocal are wonderful.
Thanks very much. I appreciate your taking an interest in this stuff. I enjoy trying to do something with these old songs.
This takes me back to my days at school in Wallsend. Very nice performance.
Thanks Colin.
No fatties no phones happy people
Cheers Roly.
Thank you for sharing this with us!
Thanks, glad you liked it. It's a favourite song of mine.
Listening to this, I feel as if I'm going back in time -- enchanting performance!
Thank you. Yes an old one indeed, they say the words were probably written in the 1700s and the pipe tune was already around. What I like about these songs is that they capture old dialect words in a nice way, words that sometimes are disappearing from usage. A good example here is hyem for home.
Tommy Whittle was such a beautiful player so melodic but great lines. Excellent post.
Thanks Colin. Agreed, he was a true gentleman and he played so beautifully.
beautiful rendition listen to it most days
Thanks very much. Glad you like it.
Nice tenor sax playing. Thanks.
Thanks Trevor. He played great on each of the three occasions he came here to play. A true gentleman and easy to work with. Happy memories.
A really lovely treatment of one of my favourites! The tempo is perfect, encouraging some beautiful melodic musings from all involved.
Thank you. We all had a great time on these gigs with Tommy. He was a true gentleman, so easy to work with and played great on all three occasions he came here. Good memories.
Durham pride!
Great, Tommy Whittle blowing up a storm, with a good rhythm section. Good post.
Thanks. Tommy was on great form.
Totally awesome. The video and the tune perfect. Thanks
Wow thanks. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Love this is it your own song sir ?
Thank you. Yes my own song. It was the title track of an album I made in 2012.
Superb rendition, with marvelous work from all involved. The enthusiastic response at the end is entirely warranted!
Thank you. I was looking through a collection of CDs and found this recording and had completely forgotten about it. When I played the CD I was surprised at the recording quality (I think it was probably with Billy Harper's Sony Walkman with those minidiscs). Happy Days.
That's some beautiful tenor on an immensely swinging treatment of this jazz staple!
Yes some great playing. He came up to Blaydon three times. Such a sweet, lovely person, a gentleman. And he could play so beautifully.
A legend and excellent playing. Swinging clips of him.
All the very best.Many thanks.
All the best Trevor.
Many thanks.
The title seems a most fitting message as we begin a new year. This treatment is really lovely. All the best in 2024.
Thank you. All the best to you too.

I'm very sorry for your loss of your friend and musical associate. She made a magnificent job of this famous number and the accompaniment from you and the band is most simpatico.
Thank you. Agreed she sang this so beautifully.
What a lovely gentle voice you have.
Thanks for the nice comment Andy. Best wishes. Roly.
My unckill
I've always loved this tune. I don't recall having heard a lovelier treatment.
Wow thank you. Around that time I played the song a lot, in different settings. It was always well received. I first heard it on a great album by the late Dave Frishberg 'Getting Some Fun Out of Life'. Our intro/ending owes a lot to that version.
When I win Euromillions I intend to extend the current narrowgauge line from Slaggyford all the way to Haltwhistle once again.
Here's wishing you a massive win. Best wishes. Roly.
A really lovely take on this standard. I don't find the 4/4 rhythm at all obtrusive. Great that somebody caught this session!
Thanks very much. I'm pleased you feel that re the guitar level. I think '4 to the bar' rhythm, specifically on the electric guitar, is one of those things that particularly needs to be handled with discretion.
Swinging and one of dads favourite piano players in the North East of England.
Thanks. Your dad had good taste.
