  • For a two year period around 2001/2002 this trio held a very enjoyable weekly Tuesday residency at The Nine Pins pub/restaurant at Saltwell, Gateshead on Tyneside. On this evening our pianist Bill Harper recorded the trio using a Sony Walkman recorder. This song was composed in 1946 by Walter Gross & Jack Lawrence and has long been a favourite of jazz musicians.
    Billy Harper - piano
    Pete Stuart - bass
    Roly Veitch - guitar

It's nice to hear this 20 plus year recording. I was very likely in the audience at the Nine Pins that night!

Thanks very much Alan, those Ninepins sessions were very enjoyable. It ran for about two years. There are four more songs uploaded from that same recording if you've not already heard them. Roly.

A really lovely take on this standard. I don't find the 4/4 rhythm at all obtrusive. Great that somebody caught this session!

Thanks very much. I'm pleased you feel that re the guitar level. I think '4 to the bar' rhythm, specifically on the electric guitar, is one of those things that particularly needs to be handled with discretion.
