- Beamish - The Living Museum of the North is often referred to as Beamish Open Air Museum. Situated between Stanley and Chester-le-Street, County Durham, it was created in 1970 reaching its Golden Jubilee in 2020. Since its launch it has grown and grown with many wonderful features including an early 1900s town, a 1950s town, a mine with pit cottages, chapel, etc., several types of farm and much more. Each year there are several special events such as this Steam Gala Weekend, a fantastic celebration of a bygone era. We are so fortunate to have this world class museum on our doorstep.
I'll say you are fortunate! -- looks like grand fun. Things zip along at a much brisker pace today, but it seems that the world, for all the modern technological improvements, lacks the visual charm of earlier decades in recent history.
We are fortunate indeed. The place is brilliant and one of these special events they put on, on a nice day, is such a great day out. Many of the staff and helpers wear period clothes too which adds to the atmosphere. The engineers who invented and developed these beautiful machines were amazing.
