  • This is one of several songs I like that I recorded at home during covid lockdowns using my mobile phone. It was composed by Sammy Cahn and Saul Chaplin back in 1939 and has remained popular with jazz musicians over the years.

I was really tickled to see this title, as the song is a favourite of mine -- I play it myself, though instrumentally and in C#. Your take here is just beautiful, both guitaristically and vocally. I really like your lines in the instrumental half-chorus. ... I was thinking that the lyric was the perfect pep talk for lockdown, when many were too distressed, perhaps, to count their blessings.

Thanks very much. Yes, a lovely song and I agree about the lyrics. I do tend to be attracted to songs which raise the spirits (eg. Look For the Silver Lining) and also songs with a 'looking back to good times/memories' type of sentiment. I'm intrigued you play it in C#, any particular reason to choose that key?

@@BlaydonAces I'm pretty sure that Billie Holiday's version (w/ Lester Young, Harry Edison, Joe Sullivan, etc.) was the first of many I've heard -- I just went with that. When I have the original sheet music, I tend to stick with what the composer used, unless it poses a particular challenge for solo guitar.

@@Trombonology Yes you are right. I've just had a listen to it. I didn't know that. I've heard various versions over the years but when I got a Dave Frishberg album with it I thought I'd try to learn it and Eb suited my voice range so I just figured out my own version. Listening to Billie now I realise my chords are a bit suspect as there should, I think, be a Fm7/Bb7/Gm7/Gbo/Fm7/Bb7 line in it. Never mind, it is what it is.

Somehow the CZcams algorithm thinks the last song I listened to equates to this one. I tend to agree. The last CZcams song was from the young and lovely jazz trumpet player/vocalist Alba Armengou. She is from Barcelona. The title is ''Susurros del Viento (Live Session)''. It is an original.

I just listened to Alba's song. It's lovely. Natural and lyrical which I like. Best wishes.

@@BlaydonAces Must have been the natural and lyrical part that CZcams picked up on. Look forward to your next tune,

@@DWilliams-ce8nb Thanks very much. I do believe in music that is natural and without all the enhancements that can be done these days. There is something simple and honest about just player(s) with instrument and nothing more. Some of my songs are jazz related but others are local songs in our dialect. Hope you find them interesting.
