    B&C wasn't "ruined". It's the vocal minority of purists who spent 2 years desperately trying to shape perception & sabotaging a good show for not making their sports team come off as flawless heroes & the other team as irredeemable disney villains. Yet to see a single casual reactor who was not moved. Without the book baggage this would be considered brilliant. Like Daemon mentions how Aemond is a great fighter & smirks when asked what happens if they can't find Aemond. It was obv he knew it was an impossible mission. It seems like a lot of fans can't even catch a simple subtext unless it's dumbed down & bluntly spoonfed. Some of the best parts of this ep were the political intrigue, underscoring logistics of war, the economics of blockade. Everyone paranoid & trying to sway the king. Otto & Alicent on one side but not quite together as Alicent keeps being undermined by the men in her life. Larys on the other side. Aemond & Criston on another side. These subtle political machinations are things D&D can't even dream of doing. The "farewell to peace" parallel with Rhaenyra at the funeral & Alicent at the Sept was another poignant moment. As for B&C, HOTD just plays these moments differently to GOT. Less about shock, more about creeping unease. Part of watching GoT was about watching other people reacting in horror, surprise, etc. With HOTD I don't feel the pull to watch people shouting at the screen because it would only feel forced. HOTD had so many moments in S1 where it could have gone for a sharp stab a la GoT but instead made sure to play things out slowly. It's less interested in displays of brutality & more interested in the impact on the bigger picture. GoT (& Breaking Bad) was about dramatic moments. Hotd (& Better Call Saul) is more about everything around those moments & plays them out in a way that feels slower, less brutal & more bleak & dread. GoT had so many moments where it stabbed, even if you saw the knife coming. HOTD is more interested in digging its nails & slowly pulling a wound open. All these "bring back D&D" posts just makes me know that a lot of so-called purists didn't hate GoT's cheap, gawdy, shock value spectacle writing, what they hated was their self-insert (Dany, Jon or Stannis) not sitting the throne. I LOVED the restraint on B&C. This was peak bleak, dread soaked gothic horror. The creeping horror of the haunting soundtrack with the cutting & sawing noises. The "emotional impact" the MCU brain wanted was heavy-handed head chopping gratuitous violence. But unsettling silent terror will always be more disturbing than gory theatrics & bright Bridgerton colors that some fans complain about! The book's B&C is an overly sadistic creative writing exercise of cartoon villains (makes sense considering it's made by fictional 'historians'). The extended psychological torment of Helaena strains credibility as B&C had no personal vendetta against her & were risking their own skin playing games in the Red Keep during a war. The show exchanges gore for dread, presents it as a straightforward hit, with the grim realism underscoring the urgency & perilous stakes B&C was in. The banality of evil instead of a Machiavellian plot makes it scarier. It's easy to write a woman screaming & throwing up. But the brutally real pain, terror & despair Phia managed using only her eyes is more impactful. Helaena's freeze frame reaction was on point with her cassandra character & it was devastating. The total silence surrounding b&c & its aftermath made it even more jarring. Ofc Helaena called Jaehaerys “the boy”as she was traumatized & mimicking the speech of b&c. Her offering the necklace was brilliantly upsetting & endearing cause it shows she was too sheltered to realize what b&c wanted. But then you can pinpoint the exact moment when the switch goes off. It's like she has this moment of realization about what she prolly already foresaw. A look of quiet panic & resignation sets in. You can clearly see her dissociating. she didn't even realize that she got down the stairs. The first place her feet takes her is her mother's room for comfort. To wake her up from a nightmare which was alas too real.

    What exactly is Aemon still angry about currently? I figured he'd be a bit smug now that he has his revenge for his eye and then some. i can only see general loathing for Rhaenrya's other children, but that's not enough to convince me he's this angry about any of that. Is he insane like Criston or what? anyone care to (try to) explain? Please stipulate book version &/or show version reasoning in your explanation. Thanx.

  • @hector-nu6gl
    @hector-nu6gl Před 21 dnem

    Something you missed. Damons words to cheese for the case what happens when they are unable to find Aemond are obvious. They are the title of the episode 'a son for a son'. Blood also repeats that fact later to Cheese after he holds a knife to helana's throat. ' A son for a son he said. Does she look like a f* son to you?' So it's clear that Damon mentioned Jaeherys as the backup plan. People like to give Damon the benefit of the doubt, but that's here not possible. They only killed Jeaherys because Damon explicitly told them so.

  • @hector-nu6gl
    @hector-nu6gl Před 21 dnem

    Helena doesn't know what her own words are supposed to mean. Her prophecies are so vague like Kassandras from the Illias. It's really only possible to understand the meaning of them after something has happened but they are too unclear and unspecific to act beforehand. If anything her words lead to more opportunities for ratcatchers to work without supervision inside the redkeep.

  • @havok6280
    @havok6280 Před 21 dnem

    When Daemon confronts Rhaenys, he says he wants to kill Aemond. A son for a son. Later, Blood says Daemon used the same phrase. While Daemon's exact instructions are ambiguous, it is fair to assume Jahaerys was plan B. I much prefer the book version. Not the additional psychological torture, but the location of the murder. It makes more sense for the murder to occur in the Tower of the Hand where the security wouldn't be as tight.

    Disagree that Aegon was eager to get it over with with the small folk. He reminded me of Dany wanting to learn how to rule. Even though he wasn't the named heir, Viserys should have prepared him to rule. Rhaenyra could have easily died in childbirth. There is a reason you have an heir and a spare. Fortunately Aemond took initiative to prepare himself to rule.

    • @hector-nu6gl
      @hector-nu6gl Před 21 dnem

      Viserys failed to prepare his children to rule not only Aegon but also Rheynera. Rheynera didn't understand she couldn't sleep with other men because that would undermine her entire claim to the throne. Aegon and Rheynera act on their own impulses without considering the consequences of their actions. That's a repeating theme in the show.

    • @havok6280

      @@hector-nu6glRhaenrya understood. She just didn't care. That's why she said to Alicent, "To question my virtue is an act of treason." She just feels entitled to do as she wishes. Note that Viserys had Rhaenrya as his cup bearer at his small council. That was to prepare her to rule. Aegon tried the same thing with Jahaerys in this episode. Also Note that on his death bed that he called Rhaenrya his only child. That's how he treated his children with Alicent, an after thought.

  • @havok6280
    @havok6280 Před 21 dnem

    There is a good reason we don't see the Tyrells. Lord Lyonel was an infant when the Dance of the Dragons broke out in 129 AC. During his minority, Lyonel's mother, castellan, and steward ruled the Reach in his name as his regents. At the outbreak of the war, Lyonel's mother was judged likely to align the Reach with their "overmighty" bannermen, House Hightower, and the greens in support of Aegon II Targaryen.

  • @havok6280
    @havok6280 Před 21 dnem

    Disagree that the affair between Alicent and Cole adds depth. Keeping in mind that this is a departure from the book, it ssems like another adaptation choice that makes the Greens look worse. Cole is guilty of his share of crimes in the book but breaking his vow of chastity isn't one of them. Further, not having Alicent witness Jahaerys's murder completely changes the dynamics.

    • @manvirshergill1739
      @manvirshergill1739 Před 21 dnem

      it's understandable why Alicent is doing Criston, look at how her life has been since she was a teen, forced to marry a much older man, forced to make heirs while doing her duty, making sacrifices... but now becuase she's slowly losing her power over Aegon, she's latching on to Cole for control but at the same time fulfilling her needs and certain desires that she never fulfilled unlike Rhaenrya but again it makes her feel shameful, and sinful... yes she is being hypocritical but she's definitely not without her own complexities. I actually prefer Show Alicent to book Alicent just because of the route they are going with the character and the fact that Olivia Cooke's performance is so good to watch. Cole broke his vow of Chastity in the first season anyway and in Septon Eustace's account (fire and blood)

    • @havok6280
      @havok6280 Před 21 dnem

      @@manvirshergill1739I didn't saw I didn't understand Alicent sleeping with Cole. My problem is that it is part of a larger pattern. Alicent sleeping with Cole makes her a hypocrite. The show seems to want the audience to side with the Blacks. They consistently make changes that slant the narrative against the Greens. I would prefer a more nuanced story. The entire add campaign for second two was about picking a side. But the show seems to have made picking team Green untenable.

    • @manvirshergill1739
      @manvirshergill1739 Před 21 dnem

      @@havok6280 everyone in the show is a hypocrite one way or another... no one is perfect.

    • @havok6280
      @havok6280 Před 21 dnem

      @@manvirshergill1739how is Corlys a hypocrite? What about Rhaenys? Or Jace or Aemond? Or even Daemon? The only characters on the show who exhibit hypocracy are Alicent, Rhaenrya, Cole and maybe Otto. Regardless, the showrunners made a choice regarding Alicent and Cole. It's a departure from the source material. I'd be fine with it if these departures weren't always designed to make the Greens look bad and the Blacks look good. Example: Laenor is very much dead in the book. But if would be hard to like Rhaenrya and Daemon if they ordered his murder. So the show let him live. Another example: The is no evidence in the book that Cole was a homophobe. Yet the show has him kill a gay guy and laugh when Alicent made a crack about Laenor. Yes, Cole kills Joffrey in the book, but the circumstances are very different.

  • @manvirshergill1739
    @manvirshergill1739 Před 21 dnem

    Honestly I have a feeling Tom Glynn-Carney is going to be the MVP of the season, his performance as Aegon II in the first episode is already top-notch. Everyone thought he was going to be Joffrey 2.0 but he's not, their are layers to his character. I really loved the petitions scene in the throne room you could tell he wants to be liked by the smallfolk but still doesn't know how to be "king" because he was never regarded as the "heir" or trained by Viserys but still he was trying. Every scene of Aegon II in the episode was really interesting. You could tell the showrunners and writers really want to explore this character more and Tom looks like he's having fun playing him. Can't wait to see his reaction when he finds out Jaehaerys is dead, bring on episode 2.

    The chapter's main theme is severity of punishment and lack of proof. The guy in the village is willing to stake people for their crimes. Just mere suspicion of crime will one day be cause for a mutilitation. Geralt rejects this idea but then begins to suspect Cahir's betrayal and they get into a fight breeding an athmosphere of fear and mistrust that has a negative effect on the group. When Geralt thinks Ciri might be dead he talks about getting revenge so horrifying people will be scared to even talk about it. Geralt ultimately rejects this line of thinking by apologising to Cahir. Having sense whipped into him Geralt realises Cahir probably isn't the traitor, there is no traitor. He was going off on an innocent man. He doesn't fully reject violence and punishment and revenge. Like the Governor of the town rejecting this stuff now doesn't mean he won't become something worse down the road. It's a nice little story about paranoia and the dangers of premature punishment.

    Healthy discussion about Witcher is always good. I'd really like to have a one-one-discussion with Adrej one day about everything, in a civilazed manner ofc but I think that is in the same scale as having a talk with J.R.R. Tolkien or Hitler. Hot take, but the more you know about different kind of people, how they think, the more interesting they are. What they REALLY think, how they REALLY feel, you know. What inspired them in the beginning.

      No you don't want to talk with him, he is one of the examples of why "You should never meet your heroes.".
