Great video! I haven't thought of Triss that way, and I'm glad I do now!

    Great video!
I have come at the Witcher the wrong way perhaps, and it has affected my reading of the books (which I haven't finished reading yet) and my opinions of the characters.
My first real exposure to The Witcher was through the Witcher Adventure Game, which my best friend introduced me to one time when we were in the same state and town at the same time. It was fun to play (and to talk smack with my best friend and his fiancee while they were taking their turns), but the ideas and concepts within it really intrigued me. It absolutely gave me an interest in and a decent start to the world.
Then, unfortunately, the next time my best friend and I were in the same place for a holiday he had me binge watch the first season of the TV show, which I found to be a horrible choppy mess with the actual interesting characters such as Geralt made minor characters in the story while characters who were awful people were the 'main characters'. Yen and the rest of the Lodge were made out to be horrible, despicable, selfish people, which made me dislike them severely. I only found out later upon reading the books how the story was actually set up before being mangled for TV, and yet I still find myself hating Yen.
Reading the books changed the perception I had in many ways, and it gave me an insight to and an appreciation for the characters. They are all flawed, but that's just part of being human/humanish. Triss does some things that . . . require a lot of forgiveness to get past, but that's part of the nature of her character. By its very nature the world of the Witcher is very messed up and has a lot of awful corruptions that are pretty much just the order of the day. Which is also part of what makes it such a good and compelling story in my opinion. Triss experienced severe trauma, committed rash and unreasonable acts, but ends up growing and changing for the better through what I've read and been told, which makes for a good character arc.

Given how much you enjoy the romance between Geralt and Yennifer, would you do a chapter by chapter review with the A Court of Thorns and Roses romantasy series? Haven’t read the ACOTAR series myself, but loved listening to your chapter reviews as I read through the witcher series for the first time.

Healthy discussion about Witcher is always good. I'd really like to have a one-one-discussion with Adrej one day about everything, in a civilazed manner ofc but I think that is in the same scale as having a talk with J.R.R. Tolkien or Hitler. Hot take, but the more you know about different kind of people, how they think, the more interesting they are. What they REALLY think, how they REALLY feel, you know. What inspired them in the beginning.

I started to read the series in 2009. That was a long time ago. And I didnt read them like 5 or 6 times... That level of insanity I left for the Song of Ice and Fire series. So some things kind of escape me.
I do find that Sapkowski's story is pretty irregular in quality... There are whole bunch of chapters that feel like unnecesary filler, sprinkled with masterpieces, specially regarding the portrayal of main characters: The chapters of Ciri's training by Yennefer, Geralt's flashbacks about his lost mother, Ciri's fight in the Ice against her Nemesis... I think the major sin in Fantasy writing is creating idealised stereotypes for our power fantasies, and Sapkowski was careful enough to ground his characters very well, making them more relatable, not necesarily "likeable", hence your example of Triss is so apropriate.
Most of Sapkowski's short stories are so good and tight, very funny, yet also haunting, and even romantic. I feel he couldnt reproduce the same in novel form with cosistency. IDKW.
Also this video was incredibly sweet indeed. You earned a cookie. 🍪 🙃

In regards to the books, if a relationship is unhealthy, can it be true love? T vs Y isn't an issue in the books because Triss isn't a real character. Triss by W3 has learned from her past mistakes and become a better person. And still wants Geralt's love, while not expecting it. Yennefer however, stays the same and wants to live in the past. All while expecting & even demanding Geralt practically obey her wants. Everyone that hates Triss wants to bring it back to seducing Geralt during his amnesia (how many people have made poor decisions because of their affection for someone? Plenty.), saying Geralt and Yennefer are soulmates. But they conveniently forget that Geralt & Yennefer's relationship is completely artificial. Created by Geralt's wish. (I read it as him being a bit fascinated by someone not being immediately disgusted by him, far from true love.) Otherwise, they would have had a moment together and then never saw each other again. Basically, without Geralt's wish artificially bringing them back together repeatedly, they would have had a one night stand.

"how many people have made poor decisions because of their affection for someone? Plenty"
I don't really think that works when the poor decision in question involves stealing your supposed best friend's man because he lost his memory, while also specifically doing it for selfish reasons that DID NOT PERTAIN TO "affection" but personal gain that was outside of that.
Also he wished for their fates to be tied together so that she wouldn't die to the Djinn. Fates tied together does NOT equal lovers. One could say his Fate and Dandelion's are tied together.
She began the relationship with him BECAUSE of him willing to make such a decision for her. It didn't just "bring them back together repeatedly", they started a relationship because of it.
Even a google to the wiki of this would inform you it wasn't like in the show (which butchers the books), and only shows you didn't read them lol.

I never had a problem with Triss. For me, Geralt and Yennefer are meant to be together. But for Triss, she is probably as in love with Geralt as Geralt is in love with Yennefer. Just doesn't work out for her.

And Triss does have a great ending in the books. But agree, still team Yen. I'm still a but confused why the game writers went the path they did with her. I think it may have been a character rights issue at the time? They couldn't use Yen yet in Witcher 1 and 2? Idk

    • @MagyarBuszke
      @MagyarBuszke Před 7 měsíci

They were not confident enough to bring in another huge character, and deal with the relationships. They chose the amnesia path and that couldn't have worked with either Ciri nor Yen.

One interesting interpretation of Triss' use of magic with Geralt that I came across was that the way she went about it wasn't exactly directly influencing Geralt's mind and taking his agency, but something along the lines of enhancing her physical appearance and sex appeal -- making herself much more desirable -- which would at least absolve her of the label of straight up rapist, and is something basically every sorceress does. This would explain why no big deal is made about her use of magic and the focus is more on how she dishonestly took advantage of the situation and betrayed her friend Yen (however, it might also just be that Geralt never really was able to properly perceive what happened and Yen just never got enough information to suspect Triss actually raped him, so we don't get to see it being thrown in her face or made the topic of discussion -- after all, we also don't see Mistle's initial abuse of Ciri made into a big thing either, and that one was clearly sexual abuse of a vulnerable victim).
In any case, even if the aforementioned interpretation was definitely true, Triss still would've been a POS for taking advantage of Geralt in that sorry state that he was and backstabbing Yen. But yeah, I wouldn't argue for a second that she's a nice character to read about and that she had a pretty cool arc of development. I will, though, just for the record, say that she has no place beside my boy Geralt -- Yen is his only and true love and whoever chooses Triss in the third game is absolutely crazy!! Hahahaha.

Concidering they remain friends and i think Geralt even asks her to take care of Ciri once after that It would seem unreasonble that she did something so terrible, becouse Geralt would probably be mad at her?

@@TheParez Took long enough for anyone to comment on that little jab at the end haha. Nah, I'm not really (at least not consciously) implying anything more than that Yen is definitely Geralt's true love in the main canon (apparently even the canon of the games, as we can see in the official comic Curse of Crows) and is my invariable choice every time.
At the end of the day, anyone is free to go for Triss for whatever reason, I don't care that much to argue their subjective reasons or offer extensive reasons to not do it nowadays.
