Really wondered this chapter what was causing Auberon to not be able to ‘perform.’ Was it his age, they’ve talked about how elves after a certain age can’t/struggle to have kids; was it her scar, or was it that she’s human? Perhaps Auberon is bigoted to humans. They had no problem with genocide and enslavement of humans. It’s pretty extreme to OD on drugs just to perform.

Right? Yeah it was never made clear what exactly his problem was. I always wondered too

I'm fairly certain its because she is a human. There's a paragraph where he makes her feel really bad about herself. Where she mentions she is a gold nugget in a pile of compost. But he compares her to something else and basically says she will never be an elf.

Perhaps it's not because she looked nothing like Lara, but rather because she looked too much like her. That is to say, when Auberon looked at Ciri he saw his daughter -- might be what his death scene is hinting at (especially considering the parallel between this and another scene from a later chapter).
