Swansea Town v Preston NE - 1964 FA Cup semi final (Villa Park)
Having overcome Bill Shankly's Liverpool at Anfield in the quarter finals Swansea Town (as they then were) and the 30,000 supporters who made their way to Villa Park on 14th March had very high hopes of beating fellow second division team Preston North End and becoming the first Welsh team since Cardiff City in 1927 to make it to a FA Cup final (the swans had beaten preston 5-1 in the league earlier in the season). Unfortunately Villa Park was deluged with rain in the hours leading up to kick off, and during the match itself, turning the pitch into a swamp which certainly suited the Swans more direct footballing opponents. Despite the atrocious conditions Trevor Morris' side, sporting a tangerine strip specifically made for the game, started well and were unlucky to have a perfectly good goal chalked off for offside before the Republic of Ireland international Jim McLaughlin put them ahead before half time. The second half was to be a different matter however as with the atrocious conditions worsening Swansea conceded a penalty before a freak goal from Preston's Singleton from over 30 yards out and which took a massive deflection on the way in confirmed It was not to be the swans day.
The Swansea Town team was : Noel Dwyer, Brian Hughes, Roy Evans, Herbie Williams, Bryan Purcell, Mike Johnson, Jimmy McLaughlin, Keith Todd, Eddie Thomas, Derek Draper, Barrie Jones.
Attendance : 68,000

During their short tour of Europe in Autumn 1974 the All Blacks squeezed in this hastily arranged match with Wales. The match was played in midweek and was not a official international, despite both sides fielding full strength teams. So no caps were awarded and Wales were billed as a 'Welsh XV'. All Blacks captain Ian Kirkpatrick scored the game's only try as New Zealand ran out 12 -3 winners.

Penalty Try!
Worst refereeing decision ever
Cottey ran out Wells by some distance but really 220 was not quite enough and the game was taken away from Glamorgan. Never mind it was still a golden decade for Glamorgan cricket
Collis King dropped an easyish catch and had little impact with the bat unfortunately but 177 was never enough.
The game these days is very much dependent on huge forwards. That’s the difference these days. Those South Africans are giants.
Masson missed pen v Peru in finals.what goes around comes around.
What a delight to see JPR at 21:30, showing what he was all about - legendary. R.I.P.
RIP Leighton
Leighton James was on fire this day. He was everywhere doing everything, either flank, setting up goals, tackling Barnes and Coppell at the back. An immense performance from a quality player. Spare a thought for Larry Lloyd, who attracts criticism for his performance here. Truth is, he was left exposed by absent full backs, and was left facing small, speedy and skilful forwards on his own. RIP to both of them, both legends of the game. But this was Leighton's day, he was a quality footballer and a joy to watch in full flow.
JPRs last match against England.
Dusty Hare....no second chances there eh !!!!!!
Geoff Wheel rest his arm on Aidan’s shoulder and he flies out of the line out like he’s been pole axed, hilarious!😂😂
Wales were well and truly robbed there. Joe Jordan's hand wins the bent penalty.
Indeed they were. Be nice if Joe Jordan owned up to it instead still trying to pretend it wasn't his hand
Didn’t it occur to them in those days, to play with a white ball ?
Why doesn't the home championship return (British House)?
A lot's been said about this supposedly being a home game for Wales, but the Scots outnumbered them on the night. That should never have been. I don't know why the Welsh didn't show up in much greater numbers. I think Terry Yorath, as man of the match, said later he was disappointed by this.
Disastrous decision by FAW to put tickets on general sale - Scottish supporters snapped 80 % of them up.
John Bevan tends to get a little overlooked when people mention Welsh wingers from the 70s. It's nearly always Gerald Davies or jj williams but Bevan was brilliant.
Average pack weights Wales 15st 3lbs and France 14st 13lbs. How times have changed.
Haden felt dizzy, fainted, and fell out off lineout. Entirely innocent of cheating.
Jpr 'used all his 14 stones' for the try... How times have changed, sadly 🤔
Certainly for the worse Simon. Now the game is all about power and size - then skill and flair won games
Isnt Malcolm Nash the bowler who gave up 6 sixes to Sobers?
He was indeed Terrance.
Wales had 75 percent of ball .. home ground.... 5 natìons champs.... big lead.... so should have won easily 😂
Claims for hand ball on Jordan. Even Jordan did not appeal. Pathetic decision by the referee. That is what happens when you have 40,000 away fans appealing for a hand ball for a game Wales should have home advantage. Well done Welsh FA, not.
And an argument from over 40 years ago for the criticised VAR
Watched this game with my dad as a 13 year old Wales fan. If this vital WCQ had been played in Wales as a home game for Wales which it was at say Wrexham's ground, Wales would have won game and qualified for the World cup. But no the Welsh FA wanted the money and played at Anfield Liverpool, England, which basically became a home game for the scots with them having about 80% of the ground attendance. Big shame and poor move by the Welsh FA.
You're absolutely right in what you say (tho think there was work being done on racecourse at time which limited capacity to 15,000). Whatever it was a disastrous decision by FAW to take the game outside Wales - and a even worse decision to put tickets on general sale.
@@thewelshsportnostalgiachan4301 I watched every Wales game at Racecourse Wrexham in 70's and guess what, they virtually always won at Wrexham. Beating England 5-1 in one game and European Champions Czechoslovakia 3-0. Wales were formidable at Wrexham. Hence the Wales v Scotland game should have been played at Wrexham. There was no restricted crowd limit at Wrexham at time of Scotland game. The ground capacity was at least 25,000. I should know I went to watch Wrexham games there every week. Dreadful decision by FAW and hence they lost out on WC qualification.
Must have been big puff of wind to blow that man out of lineout
wales at its best .
Really enjoyed this
Gareth Davies with a drop goal from first phase in the red zone. How the game has changed.
Wow.. I was at that game as a 17 yo and can vividly remember McKechnie kicking the penalty.. brilliant. The All Blacks played Monmouthshire on that tour.. and to hear the late great Bill McLaren’s voice again has made my day…👌👌👌👌
When men played rugby with their brains switched on.
It's almost like rugby 😂😂😂😂
very messy scrums
I was there with the London counties 19 group team , in the stand behind the England posts (1st half) , who drew with Carmarthenshire schools 19 all the day before. England were stuffed . Someone tried to pick my pocket as we left but as I was skint he didn't get anything - the only positive from that abyssmal afternoon!
So nice to see scrums not having to set and re set (repeat loop 5 times), no box kicking and to me the game flowed far better than constant stoppages you see nowadays! It would be great if, as a one off, a Rugby match were played under the rules around in the early 80's. You've got to bear in mind the 'Steve Thomson' scenario with tackling, scrums etc - so probably very unlikely.
Well! The Welsh almost decended into rough-house . . . almost. But what great refereeing!
JPR always there with the 'bone-shattering tackle' in the nick of time
who was the replacement scrum half for Wales ?
Ball in play had to be way higher than today ?
Magnificent! Thank-you: two highlights, immaculate referreing. Secondly free running props in both sides!
Cameras facing the old Trinity Road Stand,...it's a pity they could not have panned out a little to improve the view of the game. @ 8-27....notice the white paper swan,...seems there were a lot of them and their fans also wore white paper hats. Crowd given as 63,000 or 68,000 although the terraces looked sparsely populated on this patchy film.
England's 2nd try was a forward pass.
JJ Williams scored that try!!!
When Clive Currie had his jaw broken, he had already caught the ball and taken the mark Thus it should not have been play on, that result in the Welsh getting a penalty and 3 points
Just another poor decision from a poor referee.
The late great Barry John sealing a famous win at HQ. We will never ever forget you or JPR. Thank you for all the great memories and priviledged as we are able to re live those over and over again. 🏴🏴
