  • All 90 minutes of Wales' crucial European Championship qualifying encounter with Yugoslavia in December 1983. Mike England's team went into the game knowing a win at a packed ninian park would seal a place in the 1984 finals in France. And with just over 10 minutes to go Wales looked to be heading to the finals courtesy of an early second half Robbie James goal. But a late deflected effort past Neville Southall meant the game ended 1-1 and left Wales sweating on Yugoslavia's final game with Bulgaria. And typical of the terrible luck Wales always seemed to endure in qualifying campaigns in those days the Yugoslav's scored an injury time winner against bulgaria to top the group and reach the finals in France at Wales' expense. The commentary comes from a yugoslav broadcaster.

Wales robbed of a clear penalty near the end when Ian Rush was pulled back in the area. Referee judged him to have committed an offence but guarantee nine out of ten refs would have pointed to the spot.

@@thewelshsportnostalgiachan4301 That was in the middle of a spell where we went over 50 games without being awarded a penalty - Brian Flynn scored one in Iceland in 1980 and the next one we were given was at home to Finland in 1988, scored by Dean Saunders. Not to worry though, we would probably have missed it anyway knowing our luck in crucial qualifiers back then!
