  • Extended highlights of Wales' nailbiting world cup qualifying game with Scotland at Ninian Park in September 1985. The teams went into their final group match locked on 6 points but with Scotland having the better goal difference. Wales knew they needed to win to at least secure second place in the group and a world cup play off with Australia. And after an early Mark Hughes goal Wales looked to have done enough until conceding a very unfortunate penalty with 9 minutes remaining which saw the game end in a 1-1 draw. Spain's subsequent 2-1 victory over Iceland meant yet another qualifying near miss for Wales under Mike England, as the team missed out on the play off with Australia on goal difference. The game would also be marred by tragedy when Scotland manager the legendary Jock Stein passed away from a heart attack moments after the match ended. The japanese commentary leaves something to be desired but this appears to be the most extensive surviving footage of the game in existence

This match also went out live in New Zealand and Australia given that the UEFA/Oceania play off match was always going to be Wales or Scotland v New Zealand or Australia
