  • The summer of 1993 saw Glamorgan enjoy one of the most successful season in their history and they were in pursuit of a improbable treble before this nat west cup semi final with Sussex at Hove. An army of supporters from Wales saw the Welsh county struggle to score runs on the notoriously slow flat wicket at hove but when they reduced the home team to 114 for 6 - in pursuit of 221 runs - a first lords final since 1977 beckoned for Glamorgan. But an unbeaten century for home captain Alan Wells dashed cricketing legend Viv Richards' hopes of ending his first class career with a lords final.
And the welsh side's bitter disappointment was compounded when television replays showed Wells should have been given out with his team still 64 runs short of the winning total.Thankfully Glamorgan and Viv Richards would recover from this setback and end their season on a high by defeating kent at canterbury to secure that season's sunday league title

I was one of many hundreds of Glamorgan fans who came down from Wales on a charter train to watch that game. Still can’t believe we lost. The Wells run out early in the Sussex innings was key. Looked out from where we were sitting. From memory, that was the year that third umpires were brought in for line decisions, but for whatever reason, they weren’t at Hove that day. Having said that, I’m sure Glamorgan would still have found a way to lose even if that decision had been given in our favour!

Great commentary by ray illingworth shame he was only used as a summariser for years

I remember being so disappointed that Glamorgan lost but they won the Sunday League later on.

Bill Athey was the difference with a solid 17 from 86 balls, that was quick for him, I remember watching the final, Warwickshire won in the dark, Asif Din got a ton, chasing 320

Glamorgan were notorious for getting into the latter stages of the one day competitions in the 90s and totally fluffing their lines. I always felt the biggest downfall was the obsession with batting first and trying to defend totals. It always put pressure on the bowlers as they always seemed to fall well short of a challenging total.

Cottey ran out Wells by some distance but really 220 was not quite enough and the game was taken away from Glamorgan. Never mind it was still a golden decade for Glamorgan cricket
