1978 WCQ Wales 0 - 2 Scotland. Anfield, October 1977.

- Nine minutes of highlights of Wales' crucial world cup qualifier against Scotland at Anfield in 1977 - the most extensive footage of this famous encounter available online. And it's a match which has lived long in the minds of many Wales supporters, if sadly for the wrong reasons.
Having crushed the european champions Czechoslovakia 3-0 at Wrexham a few months earlier Wales knew a one goal victory over Scotland would virtually guarantee them top place in the 3 team group and qualification for the following year's world cup finals in Argentina.
Earmarked as a home game for Wales the Welsh FA - with their eyes on gate receipts - made the rash decision to stage the game at Liverpool's Anfield ground with its 51,000 capacity rather than Wrexham's Racecourse and its capacity of 15,000. So when the Welsh team, led by captain Terry Yorath, walked out at Anfield on Wednesday October 12th they were confronted by an estimated 44,000 raucous Scots with Wales 7000 supporters in small pockets dotted around the stadium. To all intents and purposes it was a home game for Scotland.
Undeterred by Scotland's massive numeric advantage among the fans Mike Smith's team battled gamely and created some good chances, Peter Sayer and John Toshack both went agonisingly close to scoring, and Wales were arguably the better tean until the 78th minute when French referee Robert Wurtz mistakenly penalised Wales defender Dave Jones for handball in the Wales penalty area - replays clearly showing Scotland's Joe Jordan in fact handled the ball (to his credit commentator Idwal Robling pointed this out at the time).
Don Masson's penalty - and a Kenny Dalglish second when Wales were desperately searching for an equaliser - saw the Scots qualify for Argentina at Wales' expense, meaning Wales once again missed out on a major finals in heartbreaking fashion.
Amazing to look back and see such great players on both sides.
I was there that night. Feels like only yesterday. Ah the memories
Never experienced an atmosphere like it before or since Robert - such a shame that footage of the full match doesnt seem to exist.
Big Joe got away with 1 there but Kenny's goal was a peach my living memory from this game was Roughie's save from Toshack
And they thought they were going to win the World Cup after that until Cubillas of Peru sorted that out
Imagine what Peru would have done to that Wales team 🥶
After a really good two years (1976-77), it was downhill here for Scotland. For me as a Scotsman, the alarm bells were ringing after a poor 1978, even before we got to Argentina.
Great upload cheers 🏴 we deserved the win by looking at those highlights. Wales no mugs though by any means
I was at that game, in the Kop. We got a bus up from South Wales and on arrival were greeted in Liverpool by thousands of Scots. Thinking it was a home game for us, we proudly taunted them by waving our tickets. They waved tickets back. The Kop was three quarters Scottish. It was deafening. Piss filled flagons were occasionally chucked in amongst us as we approached half time. Not a nice feeling, and a desperately disappointing game.
Living in Liverpool and my Welsh influence in my family, given my sir name the Scottish background ... as an Englishman I did not know who to support! Even though the match was played at Liverpool's ground Anfield the B.B.C. (England) did not show it live ... most of us in Liverpool could re-tune into B.B.C. Wales as they showed it live but where I lived we were in a Valley (Childwall Valley) so we couldn't get a good picture ... we had the two local radio stations but I just waited for the result ... whoever won, I felt sorry for the loosers!
That's really interesting to hear David, cheers for this
@@thewelshsportnostalgiachan4301 No problem
I remember at work the next day many fellow Scots said the best team lost. In all honesty there was very little between the sides.
Remember it as a kid but watching it back can't believe the chances Scotland missed should have been finished by HT ,
Joe Jordan still hated in Wales to this day.
I don't blame them.
I'm sure he loses plenty of sleep over it.
Why Jordan? It was the ref's decision and mistake. Blame him, not Jordan.
@@SMSJSC Er, it was a bad mistake by the referee but it was Jordan who cheated! Perhaps you should tell that to the millions of England fans who (somewhat justifiably!) still hate Diego Maradona.
@@paulwilliams8389 On the Maradona handball - I still say that either the referee or one of his two linesmen should have spotted that. They didn't, or chose to ignore it. Again, Maradona is (was, RIP) a Latin American. That sort of thing is acceptable to them. Any way to get an edge is all part of the game.

I wasn't even born yet but I have watched this game loads now. The Welsh a little unlucky. Scotland had a great team back then.
Yes Wales went toe to toe with a very good scotland team in this game - could have won but for a brilliant save by alan rough.
@@thewelshsportnostalgiachan4301 I'm Scottish but I appreciate my celtic brothers and sisters. Respect. Its a shame we both might meet again to reach the world Cup once again. The Welsh and the Scots both have great teams at the moment.
Was a bit of a group of death really - 3 good teams in it. Scotland, who had reached the previous finals, European Champions Czechoslovakia and Wales who had reached the quarter-finals of the last Euros.
Monumentally stupid decision by the Welsh FA to play this at Anfield.
The Welsh fa get fuck all right, all tossers
Dalglish home ground!
@@Fiat-kl6lt Ha! And where did John Toshack play his club football? Prenton Park? Dalglish had only been with Liverpool a couple of months in October 77, whereas Toshack had been an Anfield legend for seven years by then. Great game! You wuz robbed with the penalty, but overall, the result was the right one.
Wy were they even allowed to stage it at Anfield? Just stating the obvious but that's in another country. This was an international match.
Another point - if the Welsh FA were concerned about low gate receipts from Wrexham, couldn't they have staged the game at Cardiff Arms Park? That would have been a much more obvious choice if they wanted numeric superiority.
I still recall this game from childhood, lucky pen but Kenny's header fantastic.
And a wonder save from alan rough

Watched this game with my dad as a 13 year old Wales fan. If this vital WCQ had been played in Wales as a home game for Wales which it was at say Wrexham's ground, Wales would have won game and qualified for the World cup. But no the Welsh FA wanted the money and played at Anfield Liverpool, England, which basically became a home game for the scots with them having about 80% of the ground attendance. Big shame and poor move by the Welsh FA.
You're absolutely right in what you say (tho think there was work being done on racecourse at time which limited capacity to 15,000). Whatever it was a disastrous decision by FAW to take the game outside Wales - and a even worse decision to put tickets on general sale.
@@thewelshsportnostalgiachan4301 I watched every Wales game at Racecourse Wrexham in 70's and guess what, they virtually always won at Wrexham. Beating England 5-1 in one game and European Champions Czechoslovakia 3-0. Wales were formidable at Wrexham. Hence the Wales v Scotland game should have been played at Wrexham. There was no restricted crowd limit at Wrexham at time of Scotland game. The ground capacity was at least 25,000. I should know I went to watch Wrexham games there every week. Dreadful decision by FAW and hence they lost out on WC qualification.
Toshack was brilliant in this game, not surprised on his home ground Wales so unlucky

Correct outcome as Scotland were a great team and full of talent.Should have wen't further in Argentina had Ally McLeod played certain top players on our bench!
Yes Scotland had a very good side David and should have done better in Argentina. But on the night Wales matched them every step of the way and were very unlucky to lose. It's just a shame the beeb seems to have wiped the match from the archives and only brief highlights like this remain.

I didn’t realise Scotland were denied a stone wall penalty in the first half before Joe Jordan won the stone walker in the second half. All levels out in the end. Wales would have struggled against Iran and Peru anyway, and Archie Gemmell plays for Scotland, so did them a favour
The foul on Dalgleish looked a pen for sure, so we did get lucky there....but very unlucky with toshack's shot getting tipped on to the bar and the officials not spotting Joe Jordan handling the ball. Think a draw would have been a fairer result on the night
@@thewelshsportnostalgiachan4301 You forgto Don Massons corner - and 2 clearences off the line. Scotland were too much for Wales then, both as a team and on paper. The weakest link was the goalie - safe to say the worst goalie Scotland have had - normally other way about.

But there's not one player on the park, or any other, who would have rushed up to the referee to inform him politely that he'd got it wrong if they were given a dubious penalty. Not one! A lot's been said about this supposedly being a home game for Wales, but the Scots outnumbered them on the night. That should never have been. I don't know why the Welsh didn't show up in much greater numbers. I think Terry Yorath, as man of the match, said later he was disappointed by this.
Disastrous decision by FAW to put tickets on general sale - Scottish supporters snapped 80 % of them up.

What was the attendance for this game?
about 52, 000 Gregor - and 46000 of those were from scotland in what was supposed to be a home game for wales.
The 'official' attendance was given as 50,850 but it looked like there were several thousand more than that. I've never seen a more packed ground.

Scotland were a far superior side. They simply had better players.
The colour blind ref who saw a red arm go up when it was obviously a blue arm was Scotland's best player that night!
Hand of god
The REAL hand of GOD. Sorry Welsh people.
We forgive you John lol (mind you i dont think many people have forgiven joe jordan yet). That said if it had been one of our players who'd got away with one in the scottish penalty area im sure we would have done the same.
Welsh outnumbered
Why did the "rash" decision to play this game at Anfield cause there to be more Scottish fans than Welsh? It was still a home game so Wales should have had most of the allocation, and Liverpool is closer to most of Wales than most of Scotland, surely?
The Welsh players and manager wanted the game played at the Racecourse, Wrexham where Wales had beaten European Champions Czechoslovakia 3-0 in the previous qualifier but the Welsh FA in their infinite wisdom opted for Anfield.
@@paulwilliams8389 The question still remains - Anfield is closer to most of Wales than most of Scotland, so why did the decision to play at Anfield result in Scottish supporters outnumbering Welsh?
@@chris1232123 Because the blinkered money grabbers at the welsh fa put tickets on general release and on a first come first served basis - instead of tickets first going to all its member clubs in Wales. Scotland supporters soon got wind of this and snapped tickets up by the handful.
@@thewelshsportnostalgiachan4301 ahh right ok, that makes sense now. Thanks for the explanation 👍🏻
Jordan's handball was no better or worse than Maradona's in the WC. They were both deliberate cheats.
Claims for hand ball on Jordan. Even Jordan did not appeal. Pathetic decision by the referee. That is what happens when you have 40,000 away fans appealing for a hand ball for a game Wales should have home advantage. Well done Welsh FA, not.
And an argument from over 40 years ago for the criticised VAR
Tavy@ it was jordans hand the ball hit. How could the referee get that 1 wrong. You could easily see hes dark blue arm up in the air then it hits the ball. You could see it from 50 yards away in a heavy swarming packed crowd. So how could the referee and linesman not see that from roughly 13 yards away, more or less. It is one off footballs biggest injustices in football to this day. The referee shouldnt have awarded that penalty, it was a world cup qualifier ffs. And am scottish! But i couldnt believe he gave that penalty. I remember george best saying he had been sent of at least 10 times in his career and booked at least 30 times. And every one was for shouting at referees Becouse they were so bad. He threw mud at a referee against scotland becouse he wasnt getting any protection or even a free kick. He knocked the ball out of a referees hand after a game in wich man city beat utd with a last minute penalty that was clearly a dive by franny lee. And loads more becouse they were just useless. Best said i would score goals and do all sorts of tricks to entertain the crowd and the referees would disallow them becouse they didnt know if it was allowed. They didnt even know the rules of the game. And iam standing thincking and this is meant to be proffesional football. It was embarresing to say the least.
Agree with every fucking word mate. I was there and could see 100 fucking yards away jordan goofy prick blue sleeve hand up in the air, as for Bestie he had zero protection from shit refs week in week out , but still dazzled lightened up games
Sound common sense should have told the referee that it unlikely to be a Welsh hand. Surely Wales defender David Jones would have tried to punch the ball away from danger if he had been the one handling it rather than flicking it on into the danger area!
Joe Jordan disgrace to football never forgive him for blatant handball
looking at it closely yes it deff looked deliberate. game is corrupt... they favour scotland vs england. we're talking about fifa here.
I get that. I still haven't forgiven ref John McLean for denying Bathgate a penalty in the 1948 Scottish Junior Cup semifinal.
The Jordan handball. Joe did handle it but I suspect the referee was 'evening things up' having made a mistake in the first half by not awarding Scotland a penalty when Dai Davies tripped up Kenny Dalglish. Myopic Welsh fans conveniently forget they had earlier 'got away' with one. Don Masson should have had the chance to put us in front an hour before that Jordan/Jones incident.
Does not make it right though.
It was still a dreadful decision by the referee. And what is even more incredible is that Robert Wurtz was selected as a referee for the finals in Argentina the following, which is remarkable when you see some of the lesser mistakes that referees have been struck off the international list for in recent times.
@@paulwilliams8389 There were a lot of bad referees at that time and it reached a nadir in the finals in Argentina. In fact the FIFA Technical Report stated that, 'referees were so bad, that knowing their normal standards, one would only ask why?'
Thanks for this, even though 43 years on the injustice still upsets me !
And Bob Wilson's reaction was dreadful.

When the Scots do its colourful.
Wales now have a chance for revenge against Scotland in the 2022 WC play-off final!
How did Alan Rough play above, for example Bobby Clark of Aberdeen and every other Scotsman who has fancied a game in goal. He is soley to blame or Scotlands exit in Argentina that Summer. Latex gloves were avalible had been for years. Did he use them? No. Whilst the two free kicks by Peru were ok a decent keeper would have saved them. Not only his hair was a joke but his goalkeeping not much better.
Apparently good in the dressing room nice bloke etc so put him in the squad by all means. Hey Ally McLeod knew Scottish football as manager at Ayr and Aberdeen he must of known someone better.
A fairer assessment would be that McLeod's tactical judgement and team selection were to blame. Rough was not up to the highest international standards which was not surprising as he was a part time player and of course this was known to the manager so you should blame him. He was a good shot stopper and he did actually save Scotland from a bigger defeat against Peru, but his positioning was shown up in Argentina particularly from long range and narrow angles.
@@gunternetzer9621 A fair and reasoned argument. I suppose at International level its not always about picking the best player but the best person for that team.
Scotland were outclassed. Look at the first Peru goal. How many Peru players were in the 18 yard box.
@@thevillaaston7811 I don’t think so. I think they were complacent that they would turn up and win and if Don Masson had converted the penalty they probably would have.
They underestimated Peru and Iran because Ally MacLeod’s style was to dismiss the opposition. Might have worked in the 1976 League Cup Final but not at a World Cup!
So I kind of agree but I say underestimated and lazy rather than outclassed. Although Peru had some great players. Is that fair?

Each to their own opinion.
In my time, England have reached 11 finals tournaments. The won the first, that was it. They have achieved virtually nothing in the remaining 10. They are a quarter final side, where they meet a top eight side and go out. Weaknesses in England sides are ruthlessly exploited by opponents.
Scotland in 1978? Daglish, Jordan, Souness, Robertson and a couple of others wwre not too bad. But they were alongside Kennedy, Rough, Forsyth and so on.
It was never going to happen for them. Rep, Cubillas, and others were light years ahead of Scotland. If you look closely, even the Iranians had a better touch on the ball than the Scots.
Scoring chances like the Masson penalty have to be put away. What happend? His kick lacked power and was at a ideal height for the keeper to save. Even if Masson had scored, how were Scotland going to stop Cubillas?
Even off the field it was shambles. Can you imagine the Germans or the Dutch ending up in a hotel like the one that Scotland were in? Or not double checking the medicines the players were using?
If you look at it dispassionately, a win, a draw and and a defeat was not bad.
What could Scotland have done differently? Who can say? Pick as many players from the English First Division as possible. Sticking someone in front of the back four to break up some of the opposition attacks might have ben a start.
Its not very fashionable now, but put a UK team together. In 78, the keepers would have been Shilton and Jennings, Keegan. Brooking, Robson, and few others would all have been available.
