  • A Wales team facing a first ever 5 nations whitewash faced an unbeaten England side going for a first title in 9 years on a soaking wet March day in Cardiff. Few gave Paul Thorburn's struggling Wales team a chance before kick off against an England side led by Will Carling and featuring the likes of Rob Andrew, Rory Underwood, Brian Moore and Wade Dooley. That Wales upset the form book, extending England's long losing run in Cardiff to 26 years in the process, owed much to the fact they adapted to the atrocious weather conditions much better than England. Wales scrum half Robert Jones gave an outstanding exhibition of positional kicking throughout the games, keeping England penned in their own 25 for much of the second half, and he was ably supported throughout by his half back partner on the day Paul Turner. And it was Turner's high kick into the England 22 early in the second half that resulted in the only try of the game from Wales centre Mike Hall.
Wales perhaps enjoyed some good fortune in that match - referee Kerry Fitzgerald's view of the try was obstructed as television replays showed Mike Hall didnt properly ground the ball. Wales were nevertheless deserved winners on the day. Apologies for the video quality of this upload.

I'd forgotten about Morris and his rolled down socks. Played for Orrell as I remember.

Another win for Wales. I didn’t know that Wales have won more championships including shared championships.

Yes lol (not sure if it would be awarded by a TMO these days)

But if I recall correctly, the Welsh flanker David Bryant grounded the ball a moment later... but wasn't caught on camera.@@thewelshsportnostalgiachan4301

Afraid not Tom. Was hard just to track this footage down, seems to be all that's left of the game (sadly the beeb were still wiping tapes well into the 80s - and even into the early 90s).

I guess that match was a stay of execution as Wales extended their Cardiff jinx on England for another 2 yrs
