Dorestadraid 2023: Sail and oar boats on Friesian Lakes
Once every year a group of sail and oar boats gather in the Netherlands. From wednesday evening till Sunday we make day trips, and sleep and eat on the mothership. More and more this becomes an International affair. We attract boats from France, Switzerland, and even the United Kingdom.
This year the weather was particularly hot. So there was lots of swimming, low wind sailing, and a last day of hard paddling and rowing under a very hot sun. After a wonderful four days, can we meet again soon?

High winds were expected, but I was in between the islands, and the winds were from the back. So no problem. Until I took a wrong route, the old route of yesterday was still on my watch, and I followed it too far back. I had to do a bigger crossing.

      You need a path to portage, tarmac. With the trolley it's no bother to roll, but going uphill is killing ;) Yes the Sweden portage was hard, but the road wasn't good, uphill, and I didn't know where to get back into the water.

    • @Canoesailor
      @Canoesailor Před 2 měsíci

      Thanks. I built the 4mm version since I'm not a very experienced builder. I got the panels pre cut from Switzerland, so I was sure to make the correct boat. Axel has a 4mm version too. At 3mm the planks can get wobbly, and the weight saving is not that big.

    • @mourlyvold64
      @mourlyvold64 Před 2 měsíci

      @@Canoesailor Thanks for the advise. Wobbly no good 🤪 I read an article by Michael Storer advising against scaling down the dimensions of wood too much, and instead focusing on lighter application of the glass layers for weight saving. Makes sense in many ways . Houdoe.

    • @bootsbaugarage
      @bootsbaugarage Před 22 dny

      @@mourlyvold64, that advice of Michael Storer is not what I have found out in systematic studies. In any proper glass-ply-glass composite of 6 mm strength or less, the comparatively soft plywood is the "spacer" between the glass, while the hard glass is providing breaking strength. An ARTEMIS sailing canoe from 3 mm ply together with the laminate schedule I provide will have a hull which is more than strong enough for competitive use. 3 mm ply will result in a 23 kg boat instead of 25 - 27 kg, which is a big difference to hoist onto the roof rack. You will notice, however, that 3 mm ply planks tend to bend in all directions during stitching, which gives a "wobbly" feel. Stitching must be done more carefully or the boat will have some kinks which the designer had not in mind.

      Grin, thanks for the feedback! I hate hearing myself back, as many do, I think I may use the ai voice for narrative, but keep live voice as myself

      @@Canoesailor The thing about the AI voices (where the tech is currently at, anyway) they kinda drone on as if listening to a school lecture one is bored by. I for one usually immediately tune-out when presented with them in videos of say political/historical docu-subject matter. Much more compelling (to me, anyway)to hear an individual's personalized first hand account. But I can understand and respect your differentiating between the two. Keep up the good work!

    Hi Koos Great walk through of your Artemis canoe. And after all your hard work tweaking it, I hope you don't mind us copying it when we build ours 👍. Ps, missed your accent though 🤣

      They are tapered profiles of windsurf mast, doubled up below. Diameter on the bottom is 60 mm. There's a video coming where I describe the whole boat, including mast and boom
