- Rene is happy to launch his homebuilt Viola 14, sailing canoe. I admit, I'm slightly jealous!

Thst is a beautiful craft
Great Video!
Great boat and video!
Many thanks!
I have bought plans for Viola 14, but do have concerns about her stability.
Quite stable in my experience, wider than Artemis
Great Video and wishing you much happiness in future sailing adventures with her! Question: What is her maximum weight capacity (crew + gear in the boat)? I can't find that information anywhere. I'm very tempted by the Viola, but at 187cm height and 120Kg weight I don't know if practical. At least my build is great for hiking! my height is all in the torso, from the waist up. :)
Hi Tom, you'll need the big sail! I wouldn't know that, maybe ask in the Storer boat group on Facebook?
Bow deck may be much useful
Some add a spray deck
The Viola has a good track record in rough events even with the open bow - even when bigger boats are heading for shore (in actual events a Viola was entered in. The idea is to strip all the weight out of the boat to make it portable. And hull dynamics as the boat picks up speed keep the bow out of the water.
The reality of sailing the boat is that spray and water come aboard at a slow rate over the front of the side deck and a self bailer can easily keep pace without adding much weight.
The problem with weight is that a person's capacity to move a boat is not a smooth curve. 60 to 65lbs for built Violas is still manageable for one person to move around, get on the car roof etc. But 70 to 75lbs is a real problem. Same for two person boats. Two people can lift a Laser/ILCA dinghy fine at 130lbs (~60kg) and maybe another 10lbs/5kg is OK, but add another 10lb/5kg and it becomes very difficult for two people to move around easily.
@@MikStorer may be not a deck but a bow tent. It may be much useful at no weight
@@MikStorer you say it best Mik!
@@andriyvasilenko64, it is not useful really. I built the prototype and have sailed her in many events and circumstances since 2016. The boat does not take on any water over the bow. Recently I sailed on a very large lake (Lago di Bolsena - largest vulcanic lake in Europe) where with any wind there is very quickly a very steep short chop (2-3 ft). No tendency at all to nosedive surfing down the waves or tacking up against them.
Like explained by Michael Storer Boat Plans above, any spray is blown over the side tanks (so aft of the mast). No foredeck or spray cover will prevent this from happening, the boat is simply very low and therefore wet.
Install a self-bailer and it will take care of any water coming over.
