MONDAY - POINTE DU HOC, COLLEVILLE -SUR-MER, PORT EN BESSIN AND MORE...!
MONDAY AND A WONDERFUL FIRST DAY OUT IN NORMANDY...
Knowing our preference for quiet, smaller roads I chose a route out to Point du Hoc that all should enjoy - along largely deserted rural roads, save for a few cyclists - and through some Normandy villages that look like they haven't changed in years.
When we arrived at Point du Hoc I was very put out to find that matters WOKE and "Health and Safety" had encroached on this historic site. There were people who had travelled far further than us so see where the US Rangers had scaled the cliffs to take the big guns....but no...we were not permitted to see the cliffs or the most important gun emplacement on the pointe itself. Very annoying.
Then on to the American War cemetery in Colleville - always an emotionally moving location but more disappointment. The graves, where people could walk and find their loved ones or for the others of us to look and be shocked at the age of these boys, had all been roped off. No flowers or flags on the graves that I had seen on previous visits. WHY??
Then on to Port en Bessin - we wanted to sit in a cafe and have a sandwich of icecream but....NO...only coffee, tea or beer available !! What the hell is going on?
Finally to the gun battery at Longues sur Mer - well preserved with guns in place.
In the evening we went to a restaurant called "La Manufacture", just around the corner from the hotel...some of us enjoyed a nightcap and review of the day when we got back to the hotel!
A good day - very busy!

Yes indeed Paul...
Lovely video - Thankyou Rob. I’ve been a couple of times to Normandy, it is such a humbling place. Waking around the British and Commonwealth cemetery I found really tough, reading the individual and personal inscriptions to fallen sons and fathers from their families. Definite tear in my eye. Keep up the good work and looking forward to seeing the next video in the series.
Thanks Ian - trying to publish on a Monday and Friday - 3 more to come!
Very enjoyable video Rob, a nice reminder when I was on my Normandy trip. The hell of D-day now all quiet and back to normal after the slaughter of 80 years ago. I have no problem with the music or voice overs when your sound equipment fails. Looking forward to the next one Rob. 😊👍🏍 NJ

Very moving footage Rob. I've done a similar trip. The ages on the headstones of the fallen is most upsetting. Thanks to them, I've achieved three times their age 😔
@@dougbates1770 it’s a very moving place to visit
Done the many fields and also part Belgium graves. I am 66 and my grandad a 2nd WW vet used to talk to me a lot about war when I was I think 10 yrs oldish but I have never forgotten his stark warnings about man and it’s “ leaders” sacrificing young lives for money 1st and freedom 2nd. It makes toy feel very strange and affected seeing this. When life treats me badly I go to the arboretum in Lichfield, it soon sobers me up. I think the shocking thing is the sheer numbers and at 66 their ages and what I was doing at that age, a life deprived of. Love the channel and vlogs
You words ring very true...never been to Lichfield....must go sometime.
Rob, you are not professional vlogger for people to demand better or different. You do what you can, experiment over time and will be fine. You are right about the safety culture, it's getting absurd.
It surely is Stefan !!
👍
Lovely video rob I can understand the frustration of not getting to the cliffs. But a very somber place. What those men sacrificed we can’t thank them enough.

Sadly, WOKE-ness and 'OH&S' are increasingly the cause of yet further restriction, as is 'Security.' There are some 9,387 US servicemen interred at Colleville. The German Military Cemetery at La Cambe contains 21,245 dead and there are more than 80,000 German dead interred in Normandy, something that we tend to forget. We should also remember that more than 14,000 French civilians died due to Operation Overlord. Sadly, these and countless millions of other lives have been sacrificed due to the ego of politicians. Over the years, I've attended many services of remembrance at a US cemetery in Philippines, Clark Veterans Cemetery, where 8,600 are interred. Due to military committments I have not been able to attend ceremonies in the Manila American Cemetery, where 17,206 are buried. The government-funded American Battlefield Monuments Commission do an excellent job, as does the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. The German War Graves Commission, on the other hand, is a voluntary organisation that does not receive government funding. Lest We Forget.
How’s the xsr holding up Rob? Thinking about buying one. Do you recommend? Im a larger chap like yourself, does it struggle at all?
Absolutely no prob with the XSR and all I can say is it is bound to struggle less than any other 125 because it has the full 15HP - 6th gear is like an overdrive. I was leading larger capacity bikes that were not keeping up with me.....! My one criticism is that the pegs could be slightly lower but you get used to it!
Running stop signs is eventually going to cost you 135 euros.
When?

Great video rob. I wouldn’t have the confidence to travel to France on my bike. But take my hat off to you all.

The Bocage looks quite handy for a change of clothes and there is a toilet around every corner🤣We laugh at people snoring but it's no joke for the listener..My wife and I have separate bedrooms. Was it easy to cope with the right side riding, Rob ? The vintage scooter riders are something ese, they adore their scooters, despite not been perfect at all. Very interesting upgrades on the blue Meteor. Mudflap, handguards, screen extender, sump guard and nice luggage .. Ready to conquer France or the world. Nice vintage military machinery everywhere. I am a bit a sucker for vintage machinery of all kinds.
RHS riding is not a problem - its something we all have to do if we want to leave the UK. Yes Mike made a good job of his Meteor.

Good onya, guys - great to see you still have the spirit of adventure! Re sickness, in fighter aircraft (and airsickness comes on far faster than seasickness due to movement being three dimensional) we tended towards an empty stomach.
