Tuckenhay and the stunning Bow Creek - EP3

  • The little hamlet of Tuckenhay lies, literally "tucked" into the folded hills around Bow Creek, an inlet on the River Dart in Devon.
Besides being a stunningly beautiful location, Tuckenhay has a lot more significance to me. My Great Grandfather took over the pub in the 1890s and my Grandfather, Edwin Willing, was born in the pub in 1895.
My Great grandfather also worked a double shift at Tuckenhay Paper Mill (making paper for bank notes across the “Empire” primarily India) and was also a wheelwright by trade so he was not short of a penny or two.
I am always conscious of my granddad being brought up in this idyllic environment and then one day in 1914 being plucked out of the valley, dumped on Salisbury Plain for six weeks training then a few months later finding himself in what is present day Pakistani, policing the Empire! Over the next few years he made his way through Palestine where his brigade were attacked by Turks on horseback wealding swords…something I value having learned first hand. Finally he made his way to the Western Front via Alexandria and Marseille. And after the war, he was retuned to Tuckenhay as quickly as he left, but, presumably, as a very different man.
After my great grandfather died, his daughter, my Aunt Daisy and her husband took over the pub and after her husband died, Daisy ran it alone until 1965. During this time we would regularly visit as my grandfather Edwin would often help his sister.
At some point after Daisy left, The Maltsters was owned and run by TV celebrity chef, Keith Floyd but we know what did with the profits, sadly.
Today it is still a prosperous little pub with a nice menu - their Sunday Lunch is the best I have ever had and I am an expert in Sunday lunches!!
One other thing, the cottage, “Hill Quay” was a hovel when I was a kid. My granddad’s brother lived there , kept pigs and the toilet arrangements were somewhat agricultural!! His son, my uncle Chris Willing took the house over and he won some money - about £20,000 I think in a football pools syndicate - a lot of money in the 1970s!! He extended the cottage, re-roofed it and bought the adjoining woodland turning it into something like you see today. An absolutely stunning little property on the opposite side of the river to the pub between the Maltsters and the Watermans Arms.

Taking us on a musical tour, as well, Rob? Smetana, I think? Very nice that you have that family continuity and connection to such a lovely part of the country. Thank you for taking us on vacation with you. Re your grandfather and his experiences, having been there, I can attest that war does change a man.

Once again Rob, great photography with your drone. We're you aware you flew under a wire across Bow Creek just after the lovely house your uncle used to own? About 5min 30sec in from the video start. The wire was highlighted by a small yellow sign top right if picture. Skillful flying I guess.

Yes I saw it and deliberately fly at a height where I should not encounter wires but if all else fails, the drone is festooned with sensors and will avoid!!

Wow! Thank you so much Rob. Family memories or what! Seeing Hill Quay and Uncle Perce's and Aunty Ruth's cottage, later Chris and Margaret's and the Maltsters. Our families are really connected. I worked on Tuckenhay Quay at the winery next to the pub, Pepe's winery washing bottles and we supplied cider apples to Manning's. What a place to grow up. And thanks for Bow Bridge. I spotted the farm.👍

@@anthonyphipps3574 Tony - assume this is you? thanks very much for your comment and yes are families are unusually connected by one twin joining the Willings and isn't there a connection with the Harvey family too? I'd love Margaret to be able to see this - we speak on the phone from time to time....she is amazing. Glad you liked the video - I am not saying our experiences are parallel because you we maybe there more than me but as a kid I loved it. Also remember Brenda the butcher and Vi Shillabeare?
