  • Dartmouth although it has become increasingly popular with tourists has remained largely unspoilt. Bayards Cove, where the Pilgrim Fathers put to sea is much as it has always been. Inevitably shops open and close but with its iconic Britannia Royal Navel College, the town, in my opinion, is not so different to how it was in the 1950s and 60s when I was a lad messing around in boats!

Very nice, Rob, and it's good that the place has retained it's charm. So many places have been changed in the name of 'development' and generally to their detriment. For me, Dartmouth's waterfront rather reminds me of Constitution Dock, Hobart, though sadly that too hasn't been left unmolested.

Checked out Constitution Dock, Hobart - maybe in 400 years it will be considered "quaint" !!

@@RobLittleuk Got to keep in mind that compared to UK, Hobart, like all Oz cities is quite new, even if in the Oz context it's quite old, having been established in 1804. Re Constitution Dock, I was referring more to the general area, though Hunter Street, around the Drunken Admiral and the Salamanca Market in Salamanca Place have a certain charm. The Shot Tower at Taroona - about 20 minutes south of Hobart - is worth a short visit if you're ever in the area.

@@RobLittleuk Would be nice if you were, Rob. For me to get there, it's a 4,200 km drive and includes an 11-hour ferry trip from Geelong to Devonport, or a 5-hour direct flight. When one thinks that LHR-DXB is a 7-hour flight, it puts the size of this place into perspective!

It seems tobe a nice place to grow up!❤ Not so big, but big enough to have moust of shops you need I guess. I have never thrived in towns. Lived in Trondheim 1 year, an Bergen 3 years. And 10 years in Molde. The rest out on the country, beeing a farmer. Now retired and have fun by making CZcams videos.

@@RobLittleuk It's mutch easier for you to drive your car in Norway than for me in UK, as it is not so mutch traffik here. And there are not roundabouts just after an roundabout, buildt in so to speak. And Norwegins will not push on to you when they see your licencplate. The traffic also are mutch slower. Take a loock at : Life is too short, when they were here. However if you go to a cafe or a restaurant, it's expensive. The reason for that is that there are not many who eats at those places, so to manahe paying the cook, the rent, electricity and so one. Well it has to be the guests that pays for it. However buying food in the shops is no more expensive than other countryes. I really hope you and your wife will come here as there is so mutch nice nature to see. Not so mutch really old buildings as they were buildt of wood.
