what I don't understand is why she didn't just TALK TO HER HUSBAND ABOUT IT. Like it gets me legitimately mad when I'm reading stuff about supposed "couples/spouses" and they don't have even the most BASIC of communication. You guys are supposed to be married. MARRIED. Just go to your husband and say "hey, my parents keep harassing me about baptising our child and I'm starting to get worn down and distressed about it, can we talk about our options going forward" AND BAM. LITERALLY. The problem could've been SOLVED then and there. The husband may have agreed to it if he was involved, he might've said "okay, if this is stressing you out and they're not gonna stop, we'll just get it over with". OR he might've supported her and helped her through it.
I seriously don't understand the mentality of going behind your spouses back over this instead of just TALKING about it. What was the point of marrying if you're still gonna act like kids skirting around the topic?? Even I don't act this way WITH MY FRIENDS. If I have an issue with my friend, or if I'm worried, or if something is going on or what have you, I talk to them about it. I open a line of dialogue because relationships require open and honest communication to move forward.
This was obviously a huge boundary for OP that she just blatantly ploughed through like an idiot. If she had just TALKED to him, none of this would've been a problem! I understand that abusive parents can weigh you down and stress you out and until you're ready to just give in, but the whole point of a HUSBAND is to be able to confide in him about her feelings. if she was really stressed, she would've had to actively hide it from him. it just boggles my mind.
Why can't people act like adults when in an adult relationship? communication is the most basic of basics. it's ridiculous how many issues could be solved if people just talked about things, and it's even MORE ridiculous how many issues get caused and blown out of proportion because they DON'T talk about things!

@@lillyvonshtup7314 exactly. For things like this, why is a mediator necessary? Especially before the complete betrayal from the wife, when she was just dealing with harassment and not planning to go behind her husband's back. But even partially afterwards. Maybe if she hadn't gone straight to gaslighting and had come forward right away, MAYBE things could've been salvages even with the huge breach in trust. But she didn't.
Honestly, if you can't talk about easily resolved issues without someone there to guide the discussion, then bloody hell WHY get married in the first place? The OP put trust in his wife and she would basically rather ruin that rather than have an open and honest discussion. It truly baffles me.
Again, I completely understand that the wife may be in the FOG or stuck in a cycle of abuse, but if she's not going to open up to someone she's supposed to commit her heart to for the rest of her life BEFORE it gets bad, then why choose councilling after she's already dug her grave?
Councilling should be for couples that are struggling to work through serious issues. This could've been literally NOTHING. The only reason it escalated is because the wife, for some reason, chose to do something stupid behind her husband's back. If she had been upfront from the start and said that she just wanted to end the stupid feud and get a baptism, I guarantee you that even if the OP disagreed, he probably would've been more forgiving of her thought process. The issue is the betrayal and the actions. If he had known she was weighed down by this, he could've helped her. The whole point of being someone's partner is to support them.
Like you said, if she can't do the bare minimum and have a chat with her husband one-on-one, why should he give her the floor to do so with a councillor?
This could've been a non-issue, a small fight maybe, that could've been resolved with trust, respect and compromise. Instead, the wife CHOSE to continuously deceive OP and blow everything out of proportion. Absolutely ludicrous.
I know that issues like that are bound to happen in a relationship. Maybe someone bottles up their emotions and snaps, creating a huge argument. Maybe words fail sometimes. Maybe even after the conversation there isn't any closure. Humans aren't perfect and every relationship is bound to have hiccups. But as long as it's talked over in the end and worked through thoroughly, then fine. The MIL was pressuring the mom to baptize the son WITHOUT telling OP. The way the MIL framed the baptism as “we saved his soul” she was most likely saying stuff like “Such a sweet kid, too bad he’s going to hell”. Also in Catholicism, the parents assign Godparents to assist the child in their religious journey; talk about scripture and faith and the sacraments. If OP had NO say in this that means MIL and FIL are probably the Godparents. This can be incredibly toxic since OP is a Lutheran and can have different interpretations that go against Catholicism and MiL could just say “well OP is going to hell since he’s not Catholic” and the kid would believe her as it’s his grandmother AND Godmother. This is the first step in a process that shoves OP out of his kids religious journey! Some faiths don’t baptize kids until the kid can decide for themselves if they want to continue their faith on their own (5 ish) but if they OP was expecting to do that MiL and wife took that choice from the son! That second story: Okay, so the grandparents go against their wishes to not have their son baptized and OP is the a**hole for being pissed and laying ground rules? I don't get it. Also, as a Catholic, the parents and godparents (2 people who the parents decide will help the raise their child in the Catholic faith. It's usually the parents siblings, but can be friends or other family members) need to be present for the ceremony. All parties are supposed to vow that they will raise the child in the Catholic faith. The parents/legal guardians must be present and they must consent because of the whole "raising them in the Catholic faith" part of it. It's a lifelong commitment in the church's eyes so everyone needs to be on board. While yes it is just water and words and as the parents they could choose to look at it that way, the point is, the mother went against his wishes. And wife being in on it? Are you kidding me? As parents it's your job to be on the same page when it comes to raising your children. Yes your mother could be nagging you to baptize your kid, but it's your job to put her in her place and say "no. hubby and I agreed this is what we are doing. he is our child and we will raise him how we see fit. you don't have to like it, but you have to accept it."

Words cannot express how horrified and enraged I am at the father and his new wife in the first story.
When I was a child, I had scoliosis and had to wear a back brace for over three years. My parents, of course, went to many doctors and professionals to determine what my condition was and how I should be treated. After careful consideration it was determined that curve in my spine was significant enough to warrant a brace in the hopes that it would deter the need for surgery. All of my braces, I had three, were cast by professionals to the specifics of my body, created with the correct materials. I was eight when I first started wearing them and to sum it up, wearing the braces were not fun or comfortable, sometimes painful, and often prevented me from being as active as other kids (sit-ups were not possible). However, I often had checkups to assure that I was okay and to see if the brace was helping me. What I'm saying is that even having a normal back brace is not easy, but my doctors knew what they were doing. It was a hard process, but it was for my own health and wellbeing.
The father and stepmother in this story? They disgust me. I can't imagine how cruel, cold, uncaring, and uniformed a parent would have to be to do this to their own child. As far as we know they have no medical experience, no medical evidence to show that their child is in need of a brace, and they did NOT have the proper medical materials. WHY, why then would you put your child in so much unnecessary pain and danger? Even a legit back brace is painful! I can't imagine how much excruciating pain the daughter must have gone through. And there is irreversible damage to this poor kid's mobility. This sickens me.

First story: I'm also the type of laugh when I hear something shocking. Plus honestly, this situation is so absurd that you can't help but laugh even though it's not the least bit funny. Like imagine the neighbor waking up in the middle of the night seeing an 8 year old wearing that, having to explain to their fellow officers what happened then being forced to cut it off with tools. It seems like a tasteless joke that a sick person would tell. And yeah, I hope both OPs daughter and the ex and his wife's infant will never have see them again. Besides child abuse, isn't torture a life sentence verdict?

It’s an old story. MIL couldn’t keep her trap shut because a fanatical believer. She felt what she did was just and the ends justified the means. What’s really bad is the wife is too. Or just too much of a follower. I lean to believer because there really isn’t that much difference between a Lutheran and a Catholic. I say this as someone raised Catholic. The arguments between denominations frankly crack me up. It happens in all faiths unfortunately. Even atheists fight amongst themselves on who’s the true one. It’s human nature. This could have been avoided if both partners attended both churches and had their son baptized in each church. Of course MIL would have tried to stop that. At that point you say “you want him baptized or not?” At least OP would have found out sooner his wife, deep down, wants their son raised in her denomination and not his. I’m guessing that’s the real reason they don’t go to a church. If it isn’t Catholic then I’m just not going. It’s a shame really that a marriage is broken by this. They were both raised as Jesus as Lord and Savior.

This aunt HATED her. She hated that she was fat, that she was a tomboy, and that she slouched. So this aunt would take the chains they used for the dogs, and she chained my foster sister to a kitchen chair for HOURS. I remember reading a story somewhere about a nurse who baptised, what everyone assumed to be, a dying baby so that the baby "wouldn't go to hell". The parents were Jewish, and the baby survived, and later down the line what that nurse did to the child came back to ruin the family's lives as the child was removed from their parents, despite the fact the parents were Jewish and the child had been raised Jewish, because they were baptised as a baby they were taken away.
What the grandparents did in that story is horrible and the fact the wife bucked under her mother's pressure and conspired to get it done is just..... "it's just some water" except it's not. It's never "just" this or "just" that, it has meaning, and it has consequences. The grandparents are not to be trusted and the wife certainly isn't. Divorce really does seem the way to go unfortunately, unless they can get councilling and cut the grandparents off entirely but I think the wife loves her parents too much and caves in to their demands too easily to even take the risk of staying with her. She could just as easily go behind OP's back again to let the grandparents see the kid. It's such a clusterf*ck

I would have gone to jail for beating the crap out of the ex husband and his wife after my child had to escape from their home to find help because she was being tortured. If the courts give them a slap on the wrist again, there is something seriously wrong with the court system.
2nd story: OP: we need to get into counseling because you are suspiciously okay with what your parents did.
OP's wife: * cries * No fair, you can't make decisions about our son on your own, it's just a little water!
OP: You were in on this, I can't forgive or trust you.
OP's wife: I admit it, but I'm sorry! You weren't supposed to find out. I'm a lying liar who lies, but let's do counseling, therapy, whatever you want!
3rd story: Doesn't matter if Brother was telling the truth or the GF, the common denominator is they both conspired to lie about a pregnancy so that OP would feel sympathy for them and allow them to live with her and be an unwilling hostage to their toxic relationship. They are both AHs and so is OP's mom for basically calling OP ignorant because she's never had a baby. You don't need to have had a baby to have common sense.
