Thanks so much for posting this up! I had the EXACT same issue in my '14 S5, and this video helped me find it!!
This is one of the best audi engines and very powerful, it can deliver over 450hp. With minor modifications.
What type of modifications?
@@fameshakur9355 ecu tune, dual pulley, upgraded heat exchanger, ported blower, upgraded down pipes, bigger throttle body, and intake will get you 450+, stage 1 by itself can get you 430hp on 93
@@fameshakur9355 just a stage 1 tune alone, without bolt ons will make around 430hp. These engines are crazy!
@@franzeroque1999 didn’t see your comment lol, literally same thing I’m saying 😅
@@partoosaucy1268 that’s insane
Great experience, and knowledge share bro.✊🏾
How fatal is it if one of the top guides is missing a small piece? I.e, would you bother to replace the chain and the guides if you saw that broken guide when doing upper timing chain cover reseal?
Damn ! I know bro ,,, good find
Any upgrades you would recommend while getting this repair done?
I bought a 2010 A6 for cheap that make a constant ticking that sounds like a timing chain. The car sat for 8 months before I bought it. I did an oil change and that seemed to make it a bit quieter. Took the timing covers off and noticed the guides have a little play in them but not broken. I'm going to replace upper tensioners + guides and hope that fixes the problem.
Make a video on how to replace the upper tensioners..
Worrying to see this video, I found it after searching, yesterday on first start up after a 150 mile drive I had a loud ticking noise from the same location which was changing with engine speed. Shut off for 1-2 minutes and started engine again, sound was gone.... for now.... But I had to drive another 250 miles! Love my 2010 B8 S4, is there any preventative maintenance to help longevity, or a fix like replacing the guides with non-plastic materials?
Did this motor just constantly have a knocking sound? My 2010 A6 makes some sort of tapping sound at idle. It gets quiet when you bring the rpm to over 1500, gets louder when the revs come back down to 1000. It also gets quieter when the car is in D or R. I replaced cam chain tensioners and it didn't fix my issue. I posted a video on my channel
Brother help me out, how can I switch the upper driver's side timing guide, is it easy the brown one you point to. I have a 2013 audi q7 and my knocking noise comes from the top. Sounds like a guide. Is it a part that just snaps out.
There's a recall on the top tensioners...Apparently..
BMW V8 engines have this weakness... timing chain guides wear out in less than 160k kms. At least you can get to it without having to carry out an engine removal!
How much ML km??
I'm convinced there's no problem Serge can't fix lol
Hi can you watch a video of a knocking noise I have on my a6 and tell me if this engine was making the same noise?
HOW MANY MILIES NEED CHANGE TIMING CHAIN ???
These engines are amazing when they are running properly but they are notoriously prone to engine failure. Very fast and very easy to tune however certain parts ware out quick and you can easily can easily blow your engine using cheap oil or not changing oil on time.
@Bob Saget They get very noisy early on tensioner and timing chain ware that's not good for an engine. That is pretty much engine failure when a timing chain goes early. A timing chain is supposed to last the entire life of the car. And then you require over $6000 worth of service that doesn't speak reliability to me I have a Lexus SC430 I barely have to maintain that car.
This vid makes me appreciate my 1.8t. yikes. I passed up a killer deal($600) on a a6 with a 4.2 and a clapped timing chain. It ran and had full compression I just didn't wanna deal with it.
Wow.
Why plastic why???? my S4 makes that noise on start up
Thanks for the video and at the end of the video you have a very deep and profound question why so many plastic parts? I ask myself the same questions sometimes no seriously this is a stupid design a timing chain set between the engine and transmission I guess they were so confident that it would last forever or at least until the warranty is out I personally like better a timing belt system it’s way more reliable better yet a gear set like the Touareg V10 TDI or à Cummins 6BT
Well I’m sure from their previous experience with 4.2 s4 engines (where timing chain is very similar to this) they new exactly how long it will last....
EDGEMOTORS yes, they design these cars and motors to outlive the initial owner’s interest in the car, then anyone who buys a ten year old 100k+ mile Audi has a maintenance nightmare on their hands.
Hey that small torque wrench you always use what brand is that??
I don’t remember:) it’s an assembly wrench....
Sucks to see this, but I love my 3.0T.
Can the upper chain tensioners been done on this engine in a Audi S4 B8 just like you done it in your other video on the 3.2
Allot harder, but yes....
It may be faster to pull the engine though...
Hi, where is your shop located I Have a 2009 A8L and I’ve heard that sound some times at start up or knock a little some times not always at idle.
We are in west haverstraw ny
Is it possible to replace the driver's side tensioner on the vehicle with the 3.0T engine in the car. I have a Q5.
I'm doing the tensioner on my old 3.2 A6 (following your video... thanks!).
I heard the combi valve gets in the way. I don't see any videos out there of replacing the tensioner in vehicle. When it's time do it, I hope you've done a video of it... your videos rock.
Don’t just do one. It’s the easy way to hell!
Audi loves using plastic parts instead of metal for some stupid reason. Even the entire oils filter housing is plastic and warps and cracks over time. I had all the plastic parts that Audi and VW used.
what the hell. audi are you seeing this.
So did it run fine but just sounded like knocking?
Yes it ran absolutely fine, no codes, just the noise
Its confirmed, All Audi V6/V8 motors with timing chains are garbage. 2.0t are similar with the chains in the front making them the best of the worst, this is a common enough issue im surprised its still ongoing. Im pretty sure the 2018 3.0t turbo motors will have the same issues.
2013 and audi engines *still* having problems with timing chain tensioners and guides! How could they not have managed to fix the issues which must have lasted a full decade before this engine was made? Ps I bet that stuck piece of guide plastic would have worn down in time and the noise would have gone away, but with so many guides failing it would just be a matter of time until then thing let go
Maybe... but that was only discovered when the timing cover was off.... and it could of been something allot worst than that:)
Designed to fail. Can't beat German engineering. Thanks for sharing.
Have you ever had a timing chain guide fail after only about 60K?
I’ve seen things like that... was it previously replaced? Was it original or aftermarket?
Going through this today 65k on the odo
Showroom condition car
What a shame
Can I just bring my car to you? Haha
Sure, address is in description...
Good strong motor yes a pile and I mean a pile of really dumb engineering here one of them cars they say runs great till it don’t lol I bought a 09 A6 3.0t Quattro dealing with multiple issues right after Audi dealer replaces timing not even the creators can repair them
My exact f ing question. Why put so much plastic in a 35k car. Plastic waterpump housing also
Cheap plastic, costly repair
This is a bad design engine. I worked on German cars for 40 years and can say Audi makes pure junk. They only make the car good for 4-6 years. After that it can cost big money to fix. Plus when you work on these engines you have to disassemble all the plastic hoses very carefully, best to warm up everything with a hair dryer. I would say without a doubt, excluding the V8 4 cylinder BMW engines are the longest lasting.
The inline 6 cylinder never really has these problems.
