Chain rattle 3.0T

  • Since last week I've been hearing an intermittent chain rattle. Sounds like a chain slapping. Start for a couple of seconds and then stops for a few. Only happens with a cold start and is completely gone after driving a few hundred meters or when the engine is a bit warm.
    Upper timing chain tensioner? I've been reading loads on this topic but any experience or opinions on what this is and how to deal with it would be appreciated. Thanks
    Somehow it's louder on video than IRL.
    **** UPDATE ****
    The noise didn't sit right with me hence I decided to replace the timing chain including all tensioners. Good thing that I did: pieces of plastic from both upper timing chain tensioners were broken and that's what causing this 'chain slapping' / sound. The TSB re. the 2-3 sec. time rattle on start-up is complete BS as this doesn't occur when the 3.0T is straight from the factory or timing chain and tensioners have been replaced. Click below link on how the engine should sound:

    Thanks for posting this, a lot of videos are only the first X seconds at cold start - a B8.5 I was looking to buy was making this same sound on a warm idle, primary from the right bank. Sounds exactly the same and saved me a big headache.

    I would recommend cleaning the vvt solenoid and replacing the upper tensioners since you don’t have to drop the engine for that. I’m in the middle of doing mine and I had to drop the engine to do all the chains and tensioners (my chains weren’t stretched at 155,000km). There is a TSB on the upper tensioners

      Decided to a complete replacement, it's purring like a kitten on cold start-up now: no rattle at all (also not the 'within tolerance' 2-3 sec chain rattle)...: czcams.com/video/XvqWfTW9t4M/video.html

      @@Connordgray I've heard many times that you can change them in car. It's basically the same procedure as the old 3.2 v6. Only difference is you have to remove the combi valves behind the timing chain cover, which is a total pita. You basically have to use a mirror to see what you're doing. And having small hands definitely helps lol

    Thank you very much for posting this video, and even better for updating it with the solution that worked for you!
    I have been searching to find a video that replicates the sound I hear from my 3.0T and found nothing until this video, its the exact same! I also wasn't sure if it would mean a complete timing chain replacement, but I feel better knowing that this has worked for you and hopefully it will work for me.
    Thank you, thank you!

    I bought a 2010 a6 that made a tapping/rattling noise. I had assumed it was upper chain tensioners. I replaced those and after rebuilding the car still makes the tapping. After seeing this video it doesn't seem to be the same noise. I posted a vid on my channel if you'd like to listen and offer ideas? It gets quieter above 2000rpm, and when you put the car in gear. When you bring the revs back down in N, it gets louder towards 1000rpm but gets a little quieter at idle

    • @S.Alighieri
      @S.Alighieri  Před 3 lety

      @Kenyon: listened to your vid but does sound somewhat different from the sound that my engine was making. I'm no expert but yours does sound similar to a rod or lifter knock given that it varies with the RPM.

    Hey I would like to know which of the timing chain guides were broken, I have exactly the same noise on cold startups 2 min or so and it follows the speed of the engine . If I’m correct i think the chain is slapping on the aluminium part thats supposed to hold the upper guide in. Please Let me know

    • @S.Alighieri
      @S.Alighieri  Před rokem +1

      It was one of the upper timing chain guides. You're correct if it is broken the chain will slap against the aluminum part.

      Will inspect it by s VAG specialist this week. As my tensioners hold pressure on startup, and the chain doesn’t rattle. The only problem is the slapping chain at cold. Once the engine is warm, after a minute or so no more noise. I might upload a video with the updates

    Wenn der Motor läuft klingt es bei mir etwa so wie im zweiten Video, also ohne das rattern, aber dieses klirrende Geräusch beim Start bei Sekunde 3 hab ich auch jedes Mal, weißt du woran das lag? Hab 60000km drauf und hab das schon seit dem Kauf ab ca 35000km.

    • @S.Alighieri
      @S.Alighieri  Před rokem +1

      Also, wenn es aufhört bei 3 Sekunden dann ist das 'normal', der Öldruck muss sich erst afbauen und das kann bis 3 Sekunden dauern. Dazu und beim normalen Gebrauch sollte man die Kette eigentlich nicht hören bei 35.000km bis 60.000km. Eher bei >120.000km.

      On cold start / with cold engine there was (and still is) quite some white smoke visible from mine. Once the engine is warm there is hardly any smoke. I don't think that is related to the timing chain issue however. Has to do more with the volume of the engine and condensation, I believe.
