    Utmost respect to you guys. Great to see how you take part an engine, find the faults, and put it back better than new from factory. Awesome. True skill and patience. A real set of mechanics rather than just putting it on diagnostics and saying to the customer “we’ve found no faults”. True representation of the craft of mechanic

    Which tensioner was really out of order, the camshaft chain tensioners?

    How many miles on this car? I have two of these engines: One in a 2012 Q7 with 149k miles and one in a 2010 S4 with only 56k miles. The Q7 has had a terrible timing chain tensioner rattle for a while and just recently threw codes P0018. I swapped cam position sensors but the problem stayed with bank 2. I am hoping only the upper chain tensioners are needed to replaced to fix this. Both have carbon build up in the secondary air passage ways, but the code for that on the S4 is very intermittent only on very cold days, so I am postponing. But I am worried that the Q7 will need this full timing chain rebuild and its also leaking oil somewhere in the rear. I do a lot of my own repairs (I've pulled the SC before and did the front coolant crossover pipe and water pump and replaced a turbo on another car for example), but pulling the engine at home looks very intimidating - but if I do pull it or pay someone to pull engine at least cleaning the ports will be much easier. Great videos - thanks so much for making these!

      @@VAGTechnic Thanks for the reply! For the S4 when its due for a clutch or timing chain (which ever comes first), I think I will pull the engine and do the timing chain, clutch and clean the secondary air ports and intakes all at the same time. This should be a large time savings or money (if I outsource it) savings compared to doing each of those at separate times.

    First of all I would like to say that you do a good job and make good quality videos. In many videos you say "this is one of the cleanest" I get that because the owner is watching. But judging by the overall condition of the S4 and the wear and tear inside and out, it is in very poor condition. Then you say "he spent quite a bit of money" but that's on the wrong mechanic, parts and bits, plastics and stickers... Even your quality of work replacing the chain doesn't bring this engine/car up to par because of the poor history. I am not a mechanic but this is one of the reasons I do the straight forward maintenance myself as there are a few bunglers in between. I replaced the pcv valve on my SQ5 myself a few months ago, but if it looked like the S4, I would screw it back together and quickly trade the car in. Even after you replacing the chain on the S4 after initial start up when idling it still sounds bad due to the overall poor condition of the internals. In another answer here you indicate that it has run 80k miles but it looks more like a 200k miles poorly maintained car. Many of those dudes buy such a car and do the cosmetics and tuning first when they should first go for a good solid foundation. Nevertheless, keep up the good work and look forward to your videos.

    • @VAGTechnic
      @VAGTechnic  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi,
      1st of all thank you for watching ! Well I can only judge the look of it by local standards. Unfortunately the U.K. don't have high standards when it comes to cars. They've been painted , people are changing engines for wrong ones and making funny exterior tune that I personally see as well as pieces of plastic as well mounted self tappers . BUT ! It can still be worse :D .... We have S5 4.2 in now and the video will come out soon, so you can see what a car can look like when it's bad ... This S4 that you just saw was really clean inside and out.... So that was a fact compared to what we had here. But UK cars are nowhere near Germany lets say when it comes to CLEAN tune...

      Not just that, the B8 trans has even more costly issues with the mechatronic unit.

      Most of these cars you are seeing are heavily modified. I wouldn't expect to be replacing a timing chain on this engine when it's bone stock. Gearboxes look at 2013 onwards and again if all services to schedule then no need to expect crazy expensive "services" like this one, or like mechatronic fails etc

    • @ville85
      @ville85 Před 2 lety

      @@RandomShart chain tensioners and guides will go bad also on bone stock engines, mostly because of cheap design and Long life oil changes (=short life for the engine). 99,9% of newer cars with timing chain will have issues with chain sooner or later.

    Timing chain on the back of the engine 😂. Some of them German engineers are sadists

    Seriously, what's the problem with German cars? I would be very upset if my expensive car needed $10,000.00 worth of work. This might as well have a timing belt. What good is a chain if you have to replace it?!?!?!?!?!? That car has 350,000 miles on it right? Audi and BMW cars seem disposable. Just drive it for 150,000 miles and when it breaks down, call a tow truck to take it to the junk yard for its body panels.

  • @aeroflopper

      If only it were that easy. The timing chains are on the back side of the engine, against the transmission!
