  • WHAT VALVE LIFTER NOISE SOUNDS LIKE. WHAT CAUSES VALVE LIFTERS NOISE
    If you have valve lifters noise and you are trying to figure out why you have valve lifter noise and what causes it we will show you all that. We took this engine apart and we want to show you what valve lifters look like, and why valve lifters can be noise. There are 2 major kinds of valve lifters. Some valve lifters are hydraulic and self adjustable, the other kind is manual valve lifters. In this video we will demonstrated how they work and what causes valve lifter noise and how to fix it. Most of the times valve lifters will not be easy to remove and replace. In this video we will explain what components will need to be removed to get to the valve lifters.

    As veteran mechanic on noisy valve trains....Before you tearing your engine apart to do this..Make sure you have plenty of oil pressure.Low oil pressure will make valve train rattle.If your not sure if enough pressure then add 1 quart of auto trans fluid to your oil and drive the car for couple days to see if the problems goes away..If it dont then change the oil and put 1 grade thicker oil in it and still add 1 quart of auto trans fluid.Then drive for a couple days agian...Sometimes the oil pump and or lifters get a varnish in them and they stick and dont function properly making extra noise due to lack of oil flow.The auto trans fluid has additives in it that wash the varnish away from the parts.

    Thanks for sharing. I didn't understand fully why the noise was happening. Is it because the valve lifter was worn out, meaning the thickness of the metal is worn down which creates space for the tapping sound? I just could not see from the video how to tell if the valve lifter is the main or only source of the tapping. Comparing a new valve lifter to a worn out one that needs to be replaced would have been more helpful.

    thanks so much , please help, how can I distinguish the knocking of worn out conrod bearings and the knocking of the valve lifters?

    • @rizaldyzulfiqarrachmad5964
      @rizaldyzulfiqarrachmad5964 Před 2 lety +1

      Spun conrod bearing may sounds like a random rattle because it will make a noise every time the conrod spinning, the noise have no certain intervals as it bangs around the rod and eventually worn out the cylinders too. Valve noise tends to have more certain interval.

    I love this video because I think it might've just helped me diagnose engine issues with my 2005 Honda Odyssey EX-L...yep, that's a model with the dreaded VCM engine. I do have a question, though, that the video doesn't address. Would it be possible for the ECU to throw codes for multiple/random misfires if the valve lifters are bad? I'm getting P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305, P0306....I know a lot of Google search results will show that this means it needs a valve adjustment. I've taken my van to 2 Honda dealerships and 2 independent shops that specialize in imports (1 specifically Hondas) and nobody can diagnose it. It passed all the voltage/compression, etc tests twice! It has a rough idle, but otherwise has PLENTY of power! I have a drivetrain warranty on my van, so I'm praying this will be the key in getting it properly diagnosed so it can finally be fixed. It has brand new Honda plugs and coils, my son and I cleaned the mass airflow sensor, removed the EGR valve to clean it, test it, check ports and replace the gasket. I'm getting ready to replace the PCV valve this weekend and drain and fill the transmission fluid again. The torque converter is noisy, but it shifts fine. 🤷‍♀️ If anyone in the state of Virginia sees this and wants to get a look at it, I'll happily drive it to you!

      Can you confirm the correct OEM oil weight is currently being used? For example modern engines use fully synthetic oil at a very specific viscosity (5W-15 etc etc) and if mixed with or replaced with a thicker (5W-20) or thinner oil (0W-30) can produce noisy engine components.

    • @gibsonlespaul2
      @gibsonlespaul2 Před 4 lety +3

      6 misfire codes for each cylinder? No.
      Normally when a valve is too loose or too tight, The knock sensor will detect this and tell the ECU to lean out the air/fuel mixture before catastrophic detonation and heat soak occurs.
      Check your plugs & coil packs individually, The condition of the plugs will tell you a LOT about how good or bad each cylinder is running.
      You say your Torque Converter is noisy? Are you SURE it's the Torque Converter and not the Flexplate/Flywheel maybe being cracked or warped and causing noise/shake at idle?
      A cracked flywheel could most definitely throw off the Crankshaft Position Sensor, which would cause it to idle a bit rough and cause all 6 misfire codes because it can't keep up with the flexplate when it's shaking.
      If the sensor can't smoothly get the signal exactly when the flexplate's button passes it; The the PCM cannot tell the coil packs when they should be advancing/retarded the spark of the ignition's timing in correlation to engine RPM's and you get those 6 misfire codes with a bit of a shaky idle.

    I know this is an old post but if you happen to see this, I recently started hearing a noise similar to this but only when I am accelerating. After about 15 minutes of driving it goes away. If I left off the accelerator it goes away. Should I be looking at a lifter? We just had the moter rebuilt, frsh clean oil. everything was fine for a month now this noise. Oil levels are all good. look clean. Im wondering if something dirty got dropped into the block or valve covers. Also just put new injectors in.

      exactly my frustration.
      on hearing my car engine, ive had recommendations from a professional mechanic saying 'nothing wrong', a veteran private car trader saying 'get rid of it' to a old car guy saying 'worn tappets' (my car is over 150k) which led me to this vid.
      opposite to all of this, ive heard advice online that my specific engine just has loud injectors.
      im trying to learn, who do i learn from correctly? 💀
      Edit:
      I just saw another comment that reminded me.
      Someone else said loose belt tensioner or worn belt. lmfao

      @@ruutjormun2262start with adjusting valves or replacing/cleaning lifters if ur car has them, if that doesn’t work, then keep looking lol, if it’s a grind/whine it’s probably something rotating could be a bearing water pump etc, a ticking is something moving back and forth, so could be valves, valve guides lifters, maybe rocker arm assembly. I’ve had one car fixed completely and sounds perfect with 180k after taking apart and cleaning lifters, but my other car (a Honda🤦‍♂️) ticks persistently even after valve adjustment, since it has no lifters, but some people just say some engines are noisy, so it’s hard to know
