I think Harely loved the idea of someone loving her more than she did the actual person. So instances of affection got her more hooked I think.
At least that’s how I see it a bit? Good theory though! It does make a lot of sense I think.
And Joker definitely knows he's hitting a nerve with Harley. She gives a reaction when he says something like "daddy must be so proud," so right off the bat he picked up that she had daddy issues. It's easy to manipulate someone when they take your bait though.
I like you used the clip where the Joker said "You only loved me when I was famous." Which I totally thought was true. And being abused by her dad then the Joker, no wonder she had issues.
Yeah, and I mean I barely touched on Harley's dad, but he did try to kill her to collect the million dollar bounty on her head - but not before he used her to cancel his mob debts. When THAT'S your daddy, no wonder The Joker looks like a dream boat.

It baffles and disturbs me that abusive relationships like Joker and Harley get romanticized
They're real. I've been in them, and it is very easy to not realize what's happening.
It def is romanticized to an extent. But I believe it's more that people can relate with psychologically damaging relationship. Hell I have been Harley myself. Sadly alot of people are in broken minded relationships. I believe that is why this "couple" is so popular

She’s very clearly emotionally attached to him, but he’s manipulative and abusive
Many abusors will grow trust with their victims, then manipulate them into a situation where they’ve built the relationship so much that the victims simply cannot fathom not being with the aggressor, and don’t have enough self-esteem and self-control over their lives to recognize the manipulation
Narcissist are also extremely skilled at being abusive and manipulative to the point where you think it's your own fault and his abuse is something you earned for buying the wrong milk or whatever. It's more like a gas lighting than a Stockholm syndrome for most people in these types of relationships.
Huh I always saw Harley's attraction to the Joker as infatuation but I like this take too.
I think that definitely works for some versions of Harley, but this show is a lot more complex than most people give it credit for.

I worry about getting into a relationship , because I didn’t have very good examples of love growing up. I don’t know what love is, and I’d rather be lonely than in a toxic abusive relationship. Love the hair btw.
Your plight is understandable but if you want a good example of someone living under abuse then watch Avatar the Last Air Bender. Word of advice: trying to find real love sounds better than living and possibly dying alone. You try and you might fail but you learn and do better the next time. That’s what makes worth living. That’s what I personally believe.
I didn’t have good ones growing up either and honestly had a couple of toxic relationships: but also it made me learn very important lessons and made me better at noticing signs of toxicity but also of healthiness
Being 30-something myself, I'll tell you that your mindset if valid Aghostbyanyothername. You can easily give up a lot to be in a healthy relationship, and toxic ones seem like they're getting more and more common. At the end of the day, being married is like giving someone legal permission to fart on you all the time, and it gets old... tiring... exhausting really. And you will never find happiness in someone else, so loving yourself is the best thing you can ever learn to do.
I wanna believe they BOTH love each other, but at the same time I think true love is something villains just can't manifest. Love is a combination of empathy, loyalty, sharing, and multiple other good characteristics that contradict evil. Lack of love for others is also why most villains became villains in the first place.
Shoot... I'm wondering if I can manifest love now! That's some pretty high standards. 💕

I thought the show mad it clear he was in love with Harley, even in the season 1 finale he refused to kill her because in his words it would weigh on his conscience. And Harley loved joker or was atleast unhealthily attached to him. Even though you said you wouldn’t be taking things from the comics this story is extremely similar to the mad love comics, Joker finally acknowledges he loves Harley but can’t bring himself to kill her so instead he tries to come up with ways of getting rid of her.
This was super insightful, and resonates so deeply with me and past relationships. Also,this actually makes me want to watch this series. But,seriously girl, I want you to be my hair stylist! Your hair is always on point.

Oh my gosh I've been sucked into so many bad relationships, and a lot of the same ones over and over again because I got convinced I was the problem because I was the common denominator in all these relationships. But I think it's equally possible that I have a "type" and keep getting with the same abusive personality because I've decided that's what makes sense. Honestly, I don't think Old Bruce would be a good idea unless they're also willing to introduce Terry--which would be a game changer that DCCU desperately needs right now. :)

OMG season 1 is my favorite thing in the world! I go around preaching about it being the best super hero show I've ever seen. Season 2 was a little more disappointing (seemed like Harley calmed down and everything in general got more formulaic and less shocking like it had been) but I'm hoping they do a season 3 and wind the intensity back up!
I wonder is Harley is toxic for Ivy as well. She does so many things to ruin Ivy and Kiteman's relationship and Ivy just flew into the relationship. It does not seem healthy to me either.
I hope they do a season 3 that really gets into their relationship, because I don't think it's one that makes sense long term either. Their personalities balance pretty well, and they would treat each other just fine, but Ivy was willing to still get married and only went with Harley after Kiteman told HER no more. So it's not like they came to a joint "yes, let's do this thing." Harley was an affair for Ivy, now she's a rebound, and that could leave dangerous implications on Harley's mental health if Ivy realizes that maybe she doesn't want to be with Harley after all. Either way, they did Kite man dirty! lol

Joker used Harley as punching bag? Kind of sounds like she was used to smash goons for Joker so that he can focus on trying to destroy Batman, while she takes down the "weak" defense guys.
But when Harley Quinn teams up with Poison Ivy and they do much better crime, freaks Joker and he tries to weaken Harley again by trying to have her crawl back to him. And it could freak him out more if she killed Damien; a Robin who is not only Batman's real son but was trained and raised by The League of Assassins.
So I know the process of what Joker does to Harley, when the both of them tries to top themselves at the same time. It may be abusive, but at times he does need her in his own screwed up way.
I may have leaned for the two of them to be together, but I see Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn much better in a relationship. Poison Ivy just wants Harley to be the best on her own and not see her girl piggybacking from Joker and getting backstabbed multiple times during the process.

She certainly gets put in a goon smashing role sometimes, but Joker has enough nameless goons of his own to do the fighting. In one episode he made Harley think he loved her and would treat her right this time, then he threw her out of the plane to distract Batman. And I think the first time they showed Normie Joker, he reached out his hand and Harley flinched HARD like she's used to being hit. Those details in the show are WHEW next level good. But you certainly have a valid point too that, if Joker doesn't keep Harley on a leash, she has the potential to do better without him - that's why he tried to re-acid her to make her a nobody again.

Honestly i don't care she's supposed to be so smart yet she sided with Joker helps murder innocent people gets away with it like he dose ( No after what they have done being locked in a building is not punishment ) and still thinks he's awesome even after so much abuse so to hell with her if she loved him-it don't care their just as bad as each other let them burn.

I don't mind if the Joker and Harley used to be a thing, but I'm so glad that Harley has EVOLVED past being just a henchwoman who keeps crawling back to the Joker. I'm a big fan of Batman The Animated Series, and I actually hate to say it but I really have a hard time revisiting that depiction of Harley (despite her being a favorite character from that show for the longest time) because the show gave her so many chances to change and grow as a character but instead the writers have her continuously resetting characterization ONLY so they can still use her as a henchwoman and NOTHING ELSE. Ultimately her last time as Harley Quinn was inflicting torture on a kid to destroy Batman's life (and essentially it succeeded in ruining Bruce's life), a character who gave her chances and showed compassion and kindness toward her when she DID try to change for the better.
In spite of the fact that Paul Dini loved her enough to not want her to be killed off in the flashback of Return of the Joker, and let her survive till old age, I question what he loved about her if he'd only have her place in the narrative be that she is a abused henchwoman. I would have been happy to see her step outside the Joker's influence and do good or bad things on her own terms.
That's why I love that we get a Harley now who can be an anti-hero, or a heroine, or an anti-villain, or a villain; rather than just a henchwoman. The new Harley Quinn series is great and I like that the character is used so many different ways in the comics and the old tired trope of Harley Quinn as a Joker obsessed abused woman is much more rare to see lately.
I have always wondered about that gap where Batman thought Harley died in TAS and when she resurfaced briefly in Batman Beyond. I haven't seen Return of the Joker in ages, but I feel like HE might have died in the fall but she didn't. I've always seen Harley as a wake up call. Like she HAD to be reset over and over again to make it visible to other women who go through that, give a million chances, and get manipulated into going back to their abuser. It's not pretty, and they certainly could have done more with Harley, but seeing someone else repeat that cycle may be what helps someone else understand it enough to break it in real life.

Hey Megan, I think you should try Arctic Fox hair dye. It is temporary color, but it smells amazing and is vegan. They also have some really gorgeous colors.
I've heard some good reviews about them, but I've heard their quality differs a lot between colors too so I'm not sure what I would pick. 🤔
