Batman's no kill/rehabilitate rule is amazing, but it gets borderline annoying and obnoxious when so much of the destruction of Gotham and the ENTIRETY of the Injustice timeline stems from him letting the Joker roam. Batman doesn't even have to kill Joker, he just can't put him in Arkham anymore, make a Joker prison out in the middle of nowhere and lock him there or something,

    • @GrandmasterDevo
      @GrandmasterDevo Před rokem +168

Batman wouldn't just slap Joker in a box on his own in the middle of nowhere. That's still akin to execution, just slower. Unless, the cell Joker was put in was automated and would keep him supplied with whatever he needs to survive. The problem is it would need resupplying every now and then, people delivering food and water and removing waste. As long as there's a human factor, there's the possibility that Joker will escape.

From what I know, Batman probably wouldn't do it anyways- He believes that one man shouldn't be the one deciding people's fates. That's why he hands people off to the cops, instead of just permanently offing them. If he kills or locks a person away by himself, then in his eyes, he's placing himself above the law.
Which means that if Gotham were to start executing criminals legally, then Batman would probably just let that slide...

ever since she got out from under the joker's control and has been at least trying to walk the more straight and narrow, Harley very much feels like bruce's educated conscience in these moments which is great. she's literally the only person who truly knows joker inside and out, having done his psych profile before falling for him and then having lived with him personally, she is to the clown what Jane Goodall is to chimps. as long as she's not compromised by joker, batman has no reason not to trust her judgment of Joker.
i'd even go so far as to say that batman might have actually attempted to save joker had it not been for harley saying "Honey. you're talking to the wrong girl if you think he's not dangerous in arkham..."
that statement said volumes, joker corrupted her there, arkham is where he has time to plan and can ally with other inmates, and the existence of Punchline is a statement that what he did to harley he can do again, and again, if given the opportunity, regardless of localtion or security. this doesn't just imply he'll be a lethal threat again if he lives, but also makes clear he has the potential to self-replicate, to create "clones" or "acolytes". so far Bruce has been lucky in that harley and punchline were/are both on joker's leash. but what if he creates independents? Punchline sought him out, she was already compromised before they had met. what if the next one doesn't try to find joker? what if the next one decides to rival joker instead? gotham is already chaotic and unpredictable enough, the last thing bruce needs is a city-wide clownshow sleeper cell. Joker has the potential to kill hundreds of people, and harley's statement just caused that number to multiply exponentially inside Bruce's mind. i mean we've seen batman carry smallscale portable EMPs in his belt before, he COULD have just dropped one frying the whole timing and ignition mechanism for the bomb on joker and then ran after harley. He didn't. that was a choice.

I like how it's not technically against his code to leave Joker, because he clearly has the means to save himself. If he refuses to use it, that's his choice. From a technical standpoint, it's what Joker has been trying to do to Batman - make him kill, violate his own code, but the way Harley did it was more to Batman's way of understanding the world. He was broken by the decision, but he needed to be broken in that way, just like if your shoulder is dislocated, only more pain will fix it - but it has to be a specific method, that doesn't just hurt, but also fixes what was wrong. There's no painless way to fix a dislocated shoulder, and there's no way Batman would remain unbroken /and/ beat the Joker for good.

Main problem is that comics never end. They're entirely based on generating revenue with the character's and IP rather than delivering a story. Sure, we have great one-offs, but nothing ever conclusive.
I'd honestly love a "Manga" styled Batman series with a start and end. Going over batman's entire life as say a 15-20 year tenure as the dark knight, with his life leading up to it included at the start. With this you would be able to create characters and have them go through proper development in the series rather than entirely relying on past material to dictate how the character acts. Building up each of the cast's personality from the ground up, no skips.
This way you could have villains have their own development, and arcs, even redemptions. Deaths would really mean something because this universe is self contained and the stakes won't just be negated by some garbage "universe reset". It'd be like an amalgamation of Gotham (but not shit), Year one, the Arkham series and Return of the Dark Knight all rolled into one.
That is something I would pay money for.

    • @gourdguru
      @gourdguru Před rokem +4

      i kinda agree actually.
they keep trying to solve this every time they reboot by remixing and reorganizing their alternate universes so everything is self contained and makes sense, which could have worked had they done it right the first time, but they've screwed the pooch so much now they need to stop trying to make it fit inside the canon. they need to just say none of the regular runs are "Canon", just random stories, and then clearly specify canon for limited run series and graphic novels. this way they can say "these three stories are canon to eachother, but have no bearing on the regular run issues". this would allow them to say "this story is in the Year One Canon" or "this story is in the Dark Knight Returns Canon" without worrying about what that means for the regular writing team, and as a bonus would allow them to make money off packaging more comic/graphic novel collected sets.
we used to be able to do this by writer, saying "This is Grell's Green arrow" or "this is Morrison's batman", but now writers do extended runs on comics and often come off and on the same project, writing issues 1-35, leaving to work on a Flash or a Green Lantern comic, then coming back for issues 73-102, etc. etc., and making it all too muddy to stay consistent.
problem with the Manga idea is, have you read manga? a lot of that stuff goes for ridiculously long runs with massive filler arcs and some of it intentionally keeps making up new junk so they sometimes never reach the conclusion. now put the people at DC behind the wheel of that. you MIGHT get your perfect batman story, but you'll definitely never see it's conclusion and the filler will get stale fast. then we're right back here again.

Batman and Harley Quinn always have great chemistry; they have the whole "opposite duality" thing going on, that defines his relationship with the Joker, but Harley being more of a sympathetic and relatable character makes their interactions far more intricate and complex. Joker and Batman always just fights, even when Joker is trying to "teach him a lesson" or something, it never really lands with Batman, because to Batman Joker is just a villain doing villain things - and any potential learning experience he might find in a battle with Joker is entirely incidental. With Harley, she can genuinely challenge his world views in a way that Joker, being exclusively antagonistic, never could.
Not to mention, that Harley's entire existence is practically a physical representation of Batman's failure to deal with the Joker, and embodies the harm Joker inflicts on innocent people during their long and repetitive history of fighting for Gotham. Harley's very character is in itself a sort of criticism of Batman's strict no-kill rule (whatever you may think of that rule).

"hmm yeah maybe we should stop enable the joker, he keeps killing and injuring thousands of people everytime he is doing his shit, like.. every single time, let's just kill him. Should have done it thousands of casualities earlier, but you know. Better late than never"

@@edrius154 1. Joker is legally classified as criminally insane, and therefore dodges the death sentence even in most states that have it, except for the most heinous, like texas, which will execute mentally unwell and mentally handicapped people without a second thought. pretty sure if you got the mind of an 8-year old, they'll wrap the electric chair in a red suit and tell you to go sit on santa's lap.
      2. Gotham doesn't have the death penalty.
gotham is technically in New Jersey state, but every city gotham has ever been based on(chicago, new york city, newark/jersey city) are in states that don't allow the death penalty. illinois didn't allow the death penalty until the seventy's, and then reverted back to not allowing it in the early 2000s. new jersey brought it back in '82, but got rid of it again in '07. new york brought it back in '95 and then banned it again in '04, and in '08 they had no more death row inmates and they removed all execution equipment from the NY prisons, so they don't even have the facilities, even if the law was reverted they'd have to spend a fat stack of taxpayer money to reinstall everything. IF the joker couldn't use the insanity plea, there would have been a small window of just over a decade in the late 80's to early 2000's in which they would have been able to execute him, starting from right around the time he murdered jason todd in "A Death in the Family".
even if he was caught by superman in Metropolis, D.C. also is a no death penalty state.
the closest death penalty state that could accomodate would be Ohio or North Carolina, unless Pennsylvania repeals their moratorium.

it wouldn't have meant anything then. sure the joker is just as dead and just as irrelevent, but think outside the moment:
the full details wouldn't be known, just the bullet points, IE the rumor in the streets would be either "Harley killed joker" or "batman blew up joker".
if Joker is wiped by Harley, it's just an ex-lovers' quarrel at best and a criminal taking out the competition at worst. in the first case it wouldn't even register with people, the attitude would be "Huh...GOOD for HER." and then back to business as usual, and in the second case the attitude would be "another day, another turf war" and back to business as usual.
if it plays out the way harley intended, the implications would shake the underworld of gotham. assume you're a two bit thug, or a minor villain; if you just heard through the grapevine that "Batman finally snapped and vaporized the joker with Semtex/c-4", are you gonna be going out to rob that bank tonight knowing that batman may have just decided playing nice and catching you, and dropping you in Arkham or Blackgate isn't worth the effort? not likely.
harley was trying to make a rumor about batman that batman would never willingly create about himself. she wanted his legend to cross that line he himself wouldn't, in the hopes that, at least for a while, the fear of a batman without ethic would make everyone else go to ground and keep under the radar, and incentivize less major terroristic crime and get gotham back to a place where muggings and carjackings and gang gun/drug buys are the largest issues on the table. at least until someone grows a pair and tests the boundaries.

the thing with batman's killing is it has to find a balance. you can't do what the Batman VS Superman movie did, where batman has no regard and is literally just shattering skulls against walls for no reason, attempting to kill superman just because, and then expecting me to think batman cares, or expecting me to think saying his mom's name was gonna change anything in that moment. his killing in that film for the most part worked against the story and his character. no amount of alfred joking about wind-up penguins and "Simpler times" is going to counter this and make me believe bruce USED to have ethical consistency.
same problem the early comics had, batman used to kill fairly often in the 40s, the problem was comics were so minimalist at that time that they had the ability to stress his no killing rule but didn't have the time to set up any depth of reason when he does. prime example, there's an old comic where a man is mutated against his will and running wild spreading the mutagen. the comic has batman develop an antidote, but he never even attempts to use it on the original victim, instead he just flies over the guy in the batplane throws a noose around his neck and Hangs him to death from the plane's wing with zero justification. the comic basically ends on the note "Sucks to be you bro". if that were a silver age era comic when stories got more detailed and comics were slightly longer they might have given us a panel of him trying to administer the antidote and failing, leaving him no other option. THEN it would work for his character. going back to BvS for a second, batman using his grappling hook to throw a 200 pound crate at a thug's head and splatter brain across the wall in the warehouse fight or snapping a guys neck by suplexing him on his skull is not cool. batman using the thug's gun to fire clearing rounds around the room not to kill people but to create space/distance and control the battlefield IS cool. batman using the batplane's antimaterial guns to take out those 5 armed and armored SUVs full of hostiles is perfectly fine(there was no way for him to deal with that many heavily armed guys efficiently, or honestly at all, and he was on a timeline trying to save a hostage and didn't have time to screw around).
the first mention of batman's no killing code back in the original comics said batman never kills *with a gun*, and i think that gives us a good point to anchor to. batman avoids killing unless necessary, but it isn't a religious conviction, however not killing with a firearm IS a religious conviction. this doesn't mean he won't USE guns, but that he will either use lethal rounds from a dropped gun to target a tactical advantage in a pinch like a gasoline barrel or the lynchpin holding up a shipping container on a crane, or use less than lethal ammunition against human targets(tear gas rounds and rubber bullets), or utilitarian ammo that the gun serves as a delivery system for(tranquilizer darts, tracking beacons, long range grapnel launchers etc).
as an example, let's go back to BvS and the armored SUVs. instead of him firing antimaterial rounds from the batplane he could have fired tear gas and smoke rounds, and then taken them out in hand to hand in the resulting confusion. this still would have been a waste of valuable time trying to save martha and i still think smoking the whole lineup was the right call, but the point is, that's how you write a batman that will pull the trigger till it empties the magazine and goes "CLICK", without compromising the character's ethics.
unfortunately too many writers want to do authoritarian hardliner batman, and use this attitude that batman deep down is a black and white extremist and is afraid that one's he decides to be judge jury and executioner to Joker, the pandora's box is open and next it'll be Scarecrow, then Dent, and so on and so forth until he's stacking the corpses of ventriloquist and clock king right along with the rest. considering how much they hammer on batman's spiritual and mental discipline over and over again, it really comes off as a cop out and exceptionally bad writing.
      as to joker's execution:
IF the joker couldn't use the insanity plea, there would have been a small window of just over a decade in the late 80's to early 2000's in which they would have been able to execute him, starting from right around the time he murdered jason todd in "A Death in the Family".
even if he was caught by superman in Metropolis, Washington D.C. also is a no death penalty state.
the closest death penalty state that could accomodate would be Ohio or North Carolina, unless Pennsylvania repeals their moratorium.

Yup, "Kill only as a last resort" is a better moral code than "kill all threats" or "no killing ever"

Be honest now: who would have also left Joker to die if they were in the same situation?
