  • Thanks to a letter from Phoebe, I'm pondering whether the Other Mother has to eat. If not, why does the Beldam eat Cocoa Beetles from Zanzibar?

    My first interpretation of the "ate up our lives" was that the Beldam kind of absorbed the kids futures. So maybe the Beldam needs the kids to take their future (one of the kids lives for the next 50 years, if the Beldam takes one of those kids she earns those years

    What if the beetles act as an emergency food source? Her magic is running so low that to keep it going she eats the beetles just to get her through until she can feed off Coraline. It's not a statainable thing but she just needs to last until she can get a proper meal.

    I’m pretty sure you’ve completely abandoned your original theory, but you said that “coraline is trapped either way” she just chose the harder alternative for the beldam. But then that doesn’t explain why the clock stops. Wouldn’t it be easier for the beldam to keep the clock going and make coraline stay blind in the other world?

      She mentioned in her previous theories how beldam eats off of people's love either for themselves or for others . So if she kept Coraline in her lair against her will , she wouldn't love her hence beldam won't get any food source. But tricking her into living in a place with her "parents" whom she loves will do the trick

      I think somewhere in in the 30-something video I stopped numbering the theories and said these are all just individualized now and not trying to stream into one big theory any more - just to explore some counter ideas, really. But, I think the blind Coraline would take less energy to keep trapped, so it's the Other Mother's preference, but either way I think Coraline would never be allowed to escape - so, even if it takes more energy to keep up the facade, it's worth it to have the meal for however many decade the Beldam can feed off Coraline.

      I see it as how maybe coco was a luxury when she was a human especially how old she is coco would be a new import. I see it as similar to how despite Amathist from Steven Universe doesn't have to eat but she eats piza anyway because she enjoys it. Or maybe what ever species she is can only eat bugs similar to actual spiders because personally I don't think she actually eats the kids.

    I'm reminded of a saying, "Break bread, not heads". We humans are instinctively calmed by sharing food. The Beldam could be trying to invoke that by sharing a box of chocolates with Coraline.
    Why beetles instead of actual chocolate? Maybe her power is giving out and she can't produce a box of chocolates. Or maybe she is still playing the Weird Adventure game that originally lured Coraline in or letting Coraline think she is.
    Also, considering the Beldam is an illusionist, who's to say that anything was there to be eaten? Coraline didn't eat any.

    Lots of people are talking about Wybie’s hand, but in my theory I think that when he blows away the soul sand from his hand, he is indicating that the Beldam is getting weaker ( because she has to eat ), and he is saying that if he went with her it wouldn’t matter because he would still disappear since he is still the Beldam’s puppet, so if she does somehow die then he would also die with her because he is her creation.
    I don’t know if you guys noticed this but when it started to become creepy ( after the button eyes suggestion ) the other father said that mother is resting and “her energy is our energy” ( or something like that ) and when he is saying that she is becoming weak, I’ve come to notice that they ( the puppets ) also started to look more sickly, which backs up my theory of Wybie’s hand, and when Coraline was trying to find the ghost eyes, she saw Wybie’s clothes hanging like a flag, which probably means that the other mother “got rid of him”.

    Dear fangirl,
    Have you ever heard of the midday mother?
    It's an old demon from Germany. The midday mother waits in the fields and woods on the country in summer and autumn. They are also called rye mummies. Children who go for a walk outside at lunchtime instead of going home quickly or instead of staying at school are lured by the midday mother into the fields. A child caught by the midday mother will never be seen again. What is special about it is that the midday mother is not a classic witch. She looks like the perfect mother but the horror lurks under her mask. de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roggenmuhme_(Korndämon)
    In the article you will find a definition in German. Unfortunately I don't know any English site.
    I can well imagine that the other mother is a lunch mother only in a house instead of in a field

    Kind of always thought that when she "ate" it was really more like she just passively absorbed the souls of the children. Almost like how some sea creatures filter feed.
    In other words, she really needed to sustain herself by taking in their lives without necessarily eating their bodies.

    • @robby7499
      @robby7499 Před 3 lety +15

      Otherwise eating the beetle...I think it would be like eating a potato chip...it's a luxury, but overall kind of empty calories. As in she does it just cause instead of because she needed to.

    • @TheFangirlWatches
      @TheFangirlWatches  Před 3 lety +10

      It depends on how you view the eyes really. If the ghost kid's eyes are their souls, then they seem to be an energy source, but they never seem to significantly diminish their power level. So, even if the eyes/souls are helping keep the Beldam alive, there's some other element as to why she needs to take new children every few decades - which is how I initially came to the idea that she's feeding on their love, and that's why she pushes for them to love her so hard.

    • @robby7499
      @robby7499 Před 3 lety +4

      @@TheFangirlWatches Yeah; basically just how I see it is that she basically needs their love (alongside their life forces) to sustain herself. Eating actual food like the beetles is really more liking the taste of them rather than out of necessity.
      But I feel that would then have to go into arguing just what species the Beldam is: I would think some variety of humanoid entities that are able to live potentially for centuries depending on the human souls they harness.

    This movie definitely made an impression on you, Fangirl. I have watched it a lot and do overanalyse, but you have clearly given it more thought.
    My impression is that the Beldam does not need to eat ordinary food, but she still can. The rats are able to bring materials from the real world into her netherworld and she can build all kinds of things from it. The cocoa beetles from zanzibar were probably just chocolate enchanted to wriggle a bit (gross). Yes, she definitely has to sleep, or something very similar.

  • @lisettegarcia7013
    @lisettegarcia7013 Před 3 lety +11

    Is that an official Coraline doll?
    The Beldam doesn't seem to eat the human food she gives Coraline and the other father but how can she get it without leaving the other world?
    Also do you think that room behind the mirror the Beldam put Coraline and the ghost children in, is actually where she stores her them to get her energy. Because think about it: when she pushed Coraline into the mirror to go in the room since she wouldn't apologize for saying '"You aren't my mother!"', the Beldam told Coraline that she can come out if she learns to be a 'loving daughter' then Coraline tries to leave but can't. I think that room is more than thinking about your actions. If the child saw that the 'New better version of their mom' is a monster and now wants to leave, the Beldam captured them, put them in that room, and told them that she would get them out if they behave, which maybe how the ghost children got themselves in there in the first place after they got their buttons and cried because they wanted to go back to their *true* mom for comfort since they found out they were being kept away from their actual parents. Then the Beldam was about to go check back on the children, she might have heard them crying: "I want my real mommy" (If you remember what Huck Finn Jr. told Coraline: "But I remember my true mommy) and thought that wanting comfort from your real mom is another way of showing love, so she just kept them in there for fuel, to keep her alive until she can trap her next victim. (And since the kids couldn't get any food, they died and the Beldam went back to her ugly form).
    That is how I theorize on what 'Ate up our lives' mean.

      @@lisettegarcia7013 The reason I believe this theory is because it makes sense when you think about the beldam's hot temper. You would think that the kids must have acted out like Coraline did to be put behind that mirror. Because if the beldam needed them as an energy source she could have just kept them in her world to do it. This is why we need a Coraline 2 to explain these things.

  • @_Fizel_
    @_Fizel_ Před 3 lety +1

    Theory: I think she feeds off energy in general, not just love or confidence/pride/whatever, but they just happen to be the most effective things. She can only feed on living things but she doesn't need to physically. Maybe she had earlier victims who she ate but she ended up bonding with one and saw she could feed for longer off having the kids love her then eating them. Maybe her earliest victims are the silhouette pictures we see but the reason they don't match the ghost kids is because there are no ghosts because she ate them whole, spirit and all. So she can eat the living bugs because they are live things giving off the energy she needs but other things just can't nourish her at all so there's no reason to do so.

If she did this she wouldn’t have to worry about Coraline locking the door. It seems like she is perfectly capable of doing something like that so why doesn’t she?

Like she might have souls or energy inside the food itself because she's unable to feed off any of Coraline's love or anything else because she's being stubborn and demanding that she can go home with her parents. I can't remember what its from but I remember this character from a movie that always made other characters eat constantly, even if the characters weren't hungry, just to fatten them up so that character can eat. What if the Beldam is doing the same to Coraline. Always making these big meals to make her eat just so she can be fattened up for when the beldam can have Coraline for a meal. She could be doing that for everyone who has ever walked into the limbo!

    I think the Beldam eats the living bugs infront of coraline to scare her. Everything about this scene is purposfully designed by the Beldam to make coraline uncomfortable. The moving bugs furniture, eating living bugs etc. All this to make Coraline want to leave the "other world" which of course in your theory just draws her into the deeper version of the other world, that just looks like the real world. Just like the Beldam planned it all along.

    Maybe the cocoa beetles themselves are actually souls of even older victims she lured there and she transformed them into tasty morsels, I had the same theory for Ursula the sea witch. Those prawns she snacks on? They could just be normal sea critters. But what if they were mermaids who couldn't follow up their bargain? Like you say, theories are more fun!

    hello I'm a huge fan of your videos especially the Coraline ones and I was wondering if you could answer a question for me in the opening scene when the beldam is ''making'' the Coraline doll she takes out the buttons from Mrs. Lovetts doll and meticulously picks one set specifically like that set was meant just for the Coraline doll and it's almost like each could be made for one child's doll alone and she has a lot of buttons so does that mean she could potentially have tons of dolls made in the future.

    I have an idea what the other world and the pink palace/Coralines house could be. Think of it as a hotel elevator . Coraline would take the elevator/hidden up down to the other world/a different floor then when she tried to “escape “ she go up the elevator, stop at a floor and run. But, the floor wouldn’t be the lobby/exit. It would be the basement so the other mother could lock the lobby door like as if breaking the button to press and go there aka taking the key and throwing it in a hole . I hope this makes sense ^^

    Coraline is the next beldam but didn't want to hurt anyone. To accomplish this she had to take multiple "victums" at once to be a benevelant beldam (I put "victum" in quotes because many wouldn't complain about what it entails as they get to be immortal, stay young forever, and no buttons). She developed time loops to make them immortal and feeds off of their energy for forever. Sound familiar?

    I have a theory. Perhaps the food that beldam gave to Coraline was other thing and it would be something dead or customized food that was poisoned killing Coraline slow, and I think she eats bugs because if you saw the last ravens when Coraline beat the beldam ad scaping from the other house the beldam became a spider 🕷️ with eight legs ....

    It could be that the beetles were what they are portrayed as, candy! Not sustaining or nursting in the long run but provides a temporary energy boost. The beldam can eat living things but the energy gained from that isnt close to what she needs so she pours all of.her energy into one long sustaining prey item. If you think about it humans eat a LOT of energy and produce a HECK of a lot of energy as they grow. It could be that she waits until the age of which they stop producing more energy than she can provide to eat them. After all the food seems easy enough to conjure.

  • @hayleytucker7183
    @hayleytucker7183 Před 3 lety

    I do think the beetles were just a treat, it’s supported by the chocolate box because it shows it’s not used for nutritional value but maybe just for enjoyment? Bit random but maybe they put coralline in bed so when she woke up and told her parents what happened they’d just think it was a dream as she’ll mention how she then woke up?

    I've always thought it's possible The Other Mother genuinely felt a motherly connection to Coraline, and didn't **only** want to steal her soul. It's possible that if Coraline allowed buttons to be sewn on her eyes, she would be turned into another puppet- much like The Other Father. And The Other Mother would have a one-sided love for Coraline as a mother/daughter relationship

  • @aniflowers1998

    I thnk the beatles might be closer to actual sweets than one might think.
    Think of it like this: We humans can eat chocolate and like the taste, but ONLY eating chocolate would never be enough to stay alive.
    So this might be the same for the Beldam. Everything that we concider food might just sweets/snaks for her. tasty but not enough to stay alive.

  • @chasemeintrini4053

    The other mother needs coraline to be pushed over the edge from " This is weird. I can't get home but maybe the other mother will help" to " the other mother freaks me out and I am scared"
    The bug chair n furniture and the eating of the beetles were the first scare tactic by the other mother to freak out coraline especially as she hates bugs (especially spiders). It's the first unatural thing she has done that humans don't normally do even before her appearance changes. I agree with you that the bedlam doesn't need to eat for sustenance however and keeping in mind that the ghost kids are her fabrication, we can't take "ate up our lives" at face value.
    Just my thought😊 Love your videos btw❤️❤️❤️

  • @DestinyCamp
    @DestinyCamp Před 3 lety

    The movie coraline sorta reminds me of a horror movie called jack in the box (I think that’s what it’s called) it’s mainly how the person get it’s power and how they have a time limit for it. So like with the other mother I was wondering if it’s like considering what soul/energy she gets then it adds on to the time she’s alive. Like the kids and other adults, if they’re dead it would add more time like a human is 10 years added and if it’s animal then like 5 years. Also when Wybie was explaining the grandmas twin story the cat seemed to be listening and very focused and as soon as the cat jumps onto wybies shoulder the grandma calls him in the middle of wybie speaking. Also when the mom told coraline about how she’s trying to protect her. What if when coraline fell asleep that night her parents found her in the wall talking to “herself” or asleep so they panicked and brought her to her bed then Locked up the wall¿ at the end of the movie the cat still teleported again after they had gotten rid of the key. If they shut the door and locked it, it would’ve probably stopped other ways to get back to that world. So the cat seems to probably be able to open portals to the other world when he wants. Idk if you’ve already went over these things, these are just random things I’ve noticed after watching the movie and I enjoy the way you explain theories

    Happy birthday Meghan! Wonderful theory again! I think she feeds off life forces but life forces that cannot show her love do not provide as much energy as those that do. I believe that's why she never went after the cat because she doesn't want to waste her limited energy on something that she knows will not love her naively like a child.

Some topics I think would be interesting dissecting: what is Partenia really? How is it connected to the real world? Is Clara's mother from Partenia (since Clara is the sugar plum fairy)? Is Elizabeth Drosselmeyer the King's lover (and possibly Eric's mother)?

    Rewatching these while procrastinating over my degree and have just had a thought: how exactly did the beldam manage to attain cocoa beatles from Zanzibar? These don't seem like part of her own creation but something she has acquired. Indeed, the delivery of that line really seems to revel in the "exoticism" of Zanzibar -- is the reach of her power MUCH further geographically than we have ever imagined before?! How many portals are there on Earth and are the rats and/or the cat running errands for her in multiple places by using them?! Would love to hear other people's thoughts...
