    That actually makes a lot of sense. If you pay attention to the dialogue, Coraline says "It's not my fault you hit that truck".
    I never really thought about it before, but I suppose she could've been implying that Mel hit it on purpose. Wow, it's amazing what you can miss.

      @ANIMAL.LOVERS.DONT.EAT.ANIMALS Před 6 lety +72

      I doubt that she did it on purpose. When you're trying to commit fraud, you usually try to do something that gets the other person to hit you. Also I'm pretty sure the line "its not my fault you hit that truck" was to imply that coraline was IN the car at the time, and I doubt Mel would have attempted a crash with coraline in the car.
      It was probably just to add an atmosphere of dreary issues. Medical bills, injury, being overworked, etc

      It's a possibility, but having had that happen in my household too, it's really not THAT big of a deal. The insurance pays out, you really don't have anything happen to yourself other than higher insurance rates - maybe a $200-500 a year increase. So, it's a frustration, but not THAT level of a frustration.

    • @BatterflyHigh
      @BatterflyHigh Před 7 lety +28

      That's a lot for some people, though. Also, it's not impossible that her car was totaled, especially since their VW looks entirely undamaged. When something similar happened to me, I had to buy a new car- meaning I had to beg for rides just to get anywhere for several weeks, I had to pay hundreds of dollars in fees for the car registration & license plate, I had a ton of extra things on my to-do list, and I had to downgrade my car bc there was nothing on the market at a good price like my old one. So my gas prices went up, too. I had no way to travel anywhere without begging someone else to drive me around with my giant to-do list, and Coraline's family looks like they only had one car. They may have gone several weeks struggling just to make it across town to buy groceries, in addition to the financial mess and physical pain that the accident caused. This could be weeks or months of compounding stress that she's experiencing.

Then we get when Coraline builds pillow parents and puts a brace for her mom. Then later when Coraline goes to save her parents the Beldam tears off a brace after impersonating the mom eyes and all. I wonder how bad her mom's neck was hurt in that accident. 😢😁

    • @TheFangirlWatches
      @TheFangirlWatches  Před 7 lety +91

      I thought the same thing, except, on one of my millions of times watching Coraline, I noticed that 1. Coraline uses the neck brace when her parents are missing and she makes them out of pillows, so you get a better look there. And 2. When the Beldam is posing as an identical copy of Mrs. Jones, during her change back to the Beldam, she rips off the neck brace and then it's REALLY obvious what it was. So, when I finally caught the line about the car wreck, I was like "oooh, it all makes sense now!"

  • @ANIMAL.LOVERS.DONT.EAT.ANIMALS

    Randomly gonna dump this theory that I've had for a while.
    What if the other mother was a metaphor for a parent with bipolar disorder?
    I have a mother with bipolar disorder, and the whole movie really resonated with me for how well it represented realistically flawed parents. At face value, you could easily take these parents as just struggling or being sub par support for their daughter emotionally, but once you meet the other mother, you could imagine a deeper layer to coralines real mom.
    Bipolar parents can switch from being excessively loving and giving to extremely selfish, demanding for unreasonable things, love, recognition, and they can turn explosive when they don't get their way.
    Her request to sew buttons into coralines eyes can be representative of a bipolar parent wanting to abuse their child via an absurd or impossible request for a child to fulfill, being met with intense guilt tripping via the other mother being so nice and giving. Then, when the other mother is denied, she reacts by being incredibly hurt, saying coraline needs to be a loving daughter, locking her away, etc. That manipulative and abusive behavior is one I have witnessed many bipolar parents display.

    • @ANIMAL.LOVERS.DONT.EAT.ANIMALS
      @ANIMAL.LOVERS.DONT.EAT.ANIMALS Před 6 lety +21

      As an addition, abused children of bipolar parents often fantasize about how great it would be if they could only be with the version of their mother that is loving and happy all the time. It is in fact this same subconcious desire that is what strings a child along to be abused time and time again by their bipolar parent, they experience periods of love and happiness so they allow themselves to be roped in and abused again. Hence, this is why the other mother is BOTH incredibly loving and incredibly evil. She is the embodiment of both sides of bipolar, the loving part that ropes you in, gains your trust and guilts you, and the monster that abuses you.

      I have a father with BiPolar and I can 100% agree that he can be so manipulative and now that you've said that it makes so much sense. It would also explain why the dad is so neutral in everything. At least for me when my dad was married his wife would only really follow his rules because she didn't want to get on his bad side. But someone who's Coraline's age would be starting to rebel and starting to see the worse side of their mother, maybe that's why the time is so weird in the movie, it's her aging into rebellion and seeing her mother get angrier and angrier.

    Hi The Fangirl. I just finished watching all the coraline theory videos and now I think I might have a fact you might be missed in your theories. Sorry if this gets long but just hear me out.
    Okay, so this starts out when you said that everyone in the other world is trapped there forever. Like when you used the alley as an example of how some townspeople got there. They'd be trapped, right? Anyways, if that is true, then how is wybie's grandmother there and like.. Really old, especially when we know for a fact that she is in the real world because she calls wybie. Now, I know I know, they can also be carbon copies, but wasn't the ghost of the grandma's twin missing in the graphic novel? That could in fact mean that the person we see at the end of the movie could actually be the grandma's twin and coraline wouldn't even know it because she had never seen her before the end according to the movie. (I haven't read the book or graphic novel yet so Idk about of they'd met before) in that case, it could be possible that the grandma never went to the other world at all and the person at the end is just the twin under the control of the beldam.
    Again, sorry if this was super long and confusing.. I'm not very good at putting my thoughts into words..
    Long story short, I think that the grandma we meet in the movie is actually her twin that was taken by the beldam since the grandma is still very clearly in the real world. On top of that, I think wybie never visited either, but was seen by the doll, which may or may not be able to see at all
    I really hope that that made any sense to you whatsoever

    There is a deleted scene where the mom complains about the dad's computer and says something along the lines of "I told you to get a new one" and he insists that his computer is just fine. So I think in the dad's case, he is just attached to his outdated technology. And not having a TV? Come on. Some people don't have TV by choice plus you cannot assume that just because a child isn't shown doing something, they don't have it. It might also have been something they didn't set up yet because setting up cable or satellite takes time and it looks like they got out only the bare essentials.

    If her parents are so broke that they had to commit insurance fraud and sell there possessions why are they sending coraline to a private school. I figured they are sending coraline to a private school because they are shopping for uniforms (note they aren't used uniforms but brand new one) and aren't private schools usually kind of expensive. I could be completely off and there are public schools that wear uniforms but it would still be very strange for a family that is broke to buy there daughter a brand new uniform. Well yes, but that's also kind of explained. In the shopping scene the mom was getting the uniform, but maybe that was all they could afford to get at that time. Hence why she said no to the gloves, which were marked pretty high in price for a pair if you look at the tag. She said she'd make it up if the catalog went through, and when it did she could afford the gloves that she gives her later before the well scene. I grew up with a family with similar money budgets and shopping for school clothes was the same. We could get the clothes but nothing else really. 😁😁😁

      In the movie when she was buying uniforms it was during a big sale for Presidents’ Day. She probably had to wait for the sale in order to buy the uniforms. She also only brought coraline a little bit of clothes. Like 2-3 pants 2-3 shirts which I’m sure coraline would have to rewear multiple days a week. And yes public school also wears uniforms.

    • @jsbdkal8285

      Maybe the Private School was the only school the parents could send Coraline, and maybe Mel waited until the Presidents Day sale to get Coraline clothes because she knew they would be cheaper, and from what I saw it looked like those were the only clothes they sold, so maybe the Priavte School is the only one near by that Coraline can go to.

    I love the explanation for the older computer! I was young in the 90s but even I remember that our tech wasn't that old, lol. We at least had more color to the screens, plus laptops were in existence so really no reason for the dad to have that computer unless yeah, the family's broke.

    Fangirl I believe your theory that Coraline is in the Pink Palace Limbo but, I have a piece of evidence that Ms.Spinx and Forciable are/were in the real world when Coraline arrived. When Coraline visits them and Ms. Spinx calls her Caroline, Coraline says "It's still Coraline Ms. Spinx" So at least Forciable and Spinx were there when Coraline came

    Also, if you look at the store in which the dad is entering closely, there's a sign that says "50%" as in "50% off" so if he was going to buy something for their project to review or use as a reference in his gardening articles, it really was purchased because it was on discount and the Jones' couldn't afford it otherwise. But it could also be that he is trying to submit his articles as well, or a combination of both.

    I know there's a very small chance that you'll see my comment but I have a small piece of information that may or may not interest you so basically I only recently watched the film for the first time it was during my stay with my grandma as my parents were going away for a couple days and although i'm 15 my parents didn't feel comfortable with leaving me in the house on my own so I was with my grandma for those couple days during that time like I said I watched Coraline for the first time with my grandma and after the film was finished she told me that the movie reminded her of a story she'd heard somewhere that I thought was interesting I hadn't thought about it again until now so a few bits may be incorrect because of my bad memory it starts off pretty far away from the movie but as it goes on it becomes similar here's a shortened down version of the story: There was an old women who lived on the streets of Guisborough (Which is apparently a town in Yorkshire England although I haven't checked to see if it exists yet) The woman was dark haired tall and would trick local residents to buy rotten apples by coating them in various things to make them appear fresh again one day she was attempting to sell one of her apples to a local noblemen the noblemen who had partly catched on to what she was trying to do asked the woman to take a bite out of one of the apples as if she was willing to do it he would know they were infact fresh she nibbled a small section of the apple as she thought that she consumed so little that the rotten apple could not affect her despite this the noblemen decided not to buy an apple and rode off later that day the women began feeling sick and by the time night fell she was in a lot of pain that night she died in her sleep and her body was found in the morning on the road. The devil deciding that her skills of deception could be useful to him made her soul a deal to help him capture children by giving them whatever they wanted and giving them a perfect life until they trusted her so much they would agree to stay with her forever once they agree to that the devil has the power to take them away and suck the life out of there souls until they are nothing but ghosts the devil agreed to give the woman a large house to do this in which as she was homeless almost all here life she was delighted to hear that as she always wanted a place to stay in. She agreed and ever since then children from the Guisborough area have been going missing and were never seen again. I hope you were interested by the story I at least thing it has some striking resemblance to the Coraline story especially the last bit surrounding the job the devil wanted the women to do. My grandma say's she heard the story originally from her farther she remembers him telling her where the story originated but she can't remember where he said and unfortunately her farther my great grandfather is long gone . If you have any questions about the story please inform me and I can ask my grandma once I see her again at a later date.

    I whole-heartedly agree with this theory!!! You did such a great job with this theory (and all your theories i've seen). The timeline i always went back and forth on and now i think about it and based on what you said i definitely agree with my initial thought when i saw the movie 8 years ago, that it was set in "current times" aka 2009. I never really questioned the poor thing as an abstract theory or something, i thought it was heavily implied based on what we're shown in the movie. I think they were definitely close to bankruptcy, but that it was a new financial situation for them, again based on a few points in the movie where we see glimpses of their "past life" (prior to the move that is)
    I have a few points to add if anyone feels like reading my long winded additions lol
    *disclaimer*... this video was wonderful and succinct, i hope no one thinks i'm trying to be one of those annoying nit-picky people saying "well you left this out", im not. Her theories and evidence were more than enough to prove the point and i genuinely love all of her theories. I've thought about this a lot the last few days after I watched the movie a couple more times this past weekend with my boyfriend (who heard all of my theories and musings in detail and could not have cared less lmao) so i have a lot of stuff i wanted to add, just in case anyone is interested.
    Let's start with the technology point:
    Like she said, the car and the laptop are hard to date, but to me the laptop looked pretty standard for the 2006-2010 era, laptops in 2002 were still really bulky at the base. The edges on the laptop screen her mom uses looked more stylized, which wasn't a big thing in 2002. I feel like computer's were more "function" than "form" until about '05 (sorry i work in IT so i kinda had to dissect that one lol)
    Also, her mom's cell phone, was definitely out of date for 2009 but i think that was the point, it wasn't supposed to be an iphone or a smart phone, even though by 2009 they were becoming more ubiquitous. The father's computer looked like they pulled it out of storage from when coraline was born, adding to the fact that i think like she said, most of their stuff was sold to fund the move and their flailing career. Same with the car, they only have one car, one good computer, we only see them use old phones, they probably kept the nicer of each car and computer and sold the others to move half way across the country. The car does have the standard bug body style but the inside looked newer, which also would've made sense why she got so upset about the car accident, it was their only mode of transportation, and the nicer of their possessions that they kept, and now even the value of the car was depreciated.
    As for their lifestyle: I think Coraline's mom is WAY undervalued/dismissed. On the surface the real mom seems like a self absorbed workaholic jerk that couldn't give a damn about her kid, but if you think of this new dire financial situation as a stressor you realize she lashed out because she was scared and sad that she couldn't keep their old life. At one point they obviously had a happy family and made a stable livable wage, the snow globes and the pictures of her friends and their family trips are huge indicators of the life they had to leave because they needed to sell most of the luxury items and downsize their home to survive (as an adult you can sell cars and TVs without missing them too much, but the memories of a better time you wouldn't ever want to get rid of, which is why the globes and pictures are some of the only possessions we see and the first ones they use to decorate with).
    The food they eat, like she said, looks like someone trying to save money/doesn't have any money and is using any and everything in the fridge to scrounge together a meal just to put something on the table, there's no meat, no dairy, no bread, it's just like left over veggies. Even the groceries that are shown from the mom's shopping trip that have rotted when coraline comes home and cant find her parents, it's a single bag of food for 3 people, and it's just the essentials. If you were moving your only child all the way to the west coast away from all her friends, wouldn't you think her mom would at least buy the poor girl some pop-tarts, or a nice turkey dinner or something to try and ease the pain of leaving behind her whole childhood life (the answer is yes, unlessss you cant afford the luxury of a "treat")- the mom isn't a monster. That's why the whole dinner scene with the other mother is the first thing she uses to entice her, it's coraline's most immediate want and the most palpable difference in her life) it was her most recent let down- Coraline was disgusted with having to eat these weird leftover concoctions and wanted just a decadent thanksgiving level dinner because it was a treat she hadn't had in a while. Same thing with the clothes, her real mom practically shoots daggers at her for asking for a pair of colorful gloves while they're uniform shopping, it's not because she wants to crush her spirit, shes stressed the hell out that they don't have money for necessities, let alone a ridiculously priced pair of gloves. The parents are literally going from shop to shop pedaling their catalog just to get back to being able to live semi-comfortably. It explains the crazy over reaction the mom has on every little thing coraline does/doesn't do and why she's fervently working on their catalog. As a child all Coraline sees is her whole world turned upside down with this move, and her mom basically denying her any joy in life (clothes, food, activities, anything that isnt her staying out of the way so the mom/dad can work) because she's terrified they'll be destitute. That's how the other mother is able to lure her in with very little questioning on coraline's part, the food she wants but hasn't had in a long time, new fun clothes she wants but the real mom cant afford at the moment, and the time to play with her/take her to do fun things, again she is a writer on a deadline to make a sale so her time is literally their livelihood at stake. Her real mom isn't a bad person or bad mother. The first thing she does once she can chill out for a second after they sell the catalog is get coraline the pricey gloves she wanted and take her out to a celebratory dinner, so her first actions are to spend time with her family, eating well and giving her kid a special gift. She was actually a great mom in a horrible circumstance. Coraline's real mom is head strong, and definitely an Alpha personality... just like coraline... and the loss of being able to provide and protect her family from the poor house makes her seem mean and cold, but like i said before, as soon as that stressor is gone and she feels like she can finally take a breath financially she treats coraline to the luxuries she's had to go without. I'm assuming this is also why the mom is so crappy when coraline starts telling the other mother stories, she thinks they're her kids dreams of a life her mom cant provide any longer and real mom feels guilty that she no longer can (so she snaps at coraline, then eventually locks the door to protect her, it's guilt and shame, not bad parenting)
    Anywho...
    TL;DR
    I think the movie was set in 2009 and their struggling financial situation was a newer one, which caused them to move and downsize their whole lives to an area where their careers could thrive. The stress caused Coraline's parents to be "bad", but secretly they were really good parents who loved and respected their kid, but wanted to make sure they could afford to keep living before real mom could be more like the ideal "other" mother.
    if anyone got through that, bless you lol it's late and i just wanted to give props to OP and kind of add some praise for Coraline's real mom who was secretly awesome and who without question loved her kid a lot.

    commenting this again so you'll see it: I would like to add my two cents. I do not think she is in a limbo pink palace. that might confuse some people because they think there was no way the beldam would know about the gloves at the store. She knew because the doll was in the room when they argued about it when coraline and her mom got home. The doll picked up coraline talking about the gloves, Which explains why the beldam didn't get gloves that looked like the ones in the store, she didn't know what they looked like.

    So I haven’t been following very long but I absolutely adore this channel. I’m currently binging my way through this series and I love most aspects of this theory (and the other questions/theories it highlights)..
    I also agree with all the evidence of the Jones’ being poor. I don’t necessarily disagree with the car accident being a scam and given your personal experience with it, I can totally see why you see it that way. But if Mel didn’t cause the accident, her frustrations make even more sense. If she did cause the accident, the settlement still wasn’t enough to fix anything. I’m not a con artist, but knowing my failure hurt my family would be devastating.
    But if she didn’t cause it.. then maybe the accident put her out of work and that’s how she ended up editing her husband’s sub par writing on this project. Them being a long time team doesn’t mean she didn’t have other jobs. If they were scammed then that could have actually caused the bankruptcy. If she’s wearing the neck brace because she’s actually injured/in pain, it makes even more sense for her to be super snippy.
    Based on Coraline’s line/delivery “it’s not my fault you hit that truck!” we can assume that she was there. If Mel hit a truck with her daughter in the car, it’s hard for me to believe that she did it intentionally. If she was alone I wouldn’t question it one bit. I also don’t think Mel being a scammer serves the exposition or plot in any way. If anything, them being scammed aligns more with the Jones’ down on their luck narrative that’s in the film/book. In a way, the accident could’ve caused the entire chain of events that put them in the pink palace to begin with. Maybe the Other mother was even involved in instigating the accident somehow?
    I’m no expert, just some random thoughts. What a ride though!
    Side note: I also like the parallel in their family name in terms of “keeping up with the jones,” it pairs so well with the “grass is greener on the Other side” and appreciating what you have themes.
    Edited because I wrote a novel and pressed send too early💀.

      No problem! I have a request. Could you start doing a theory on the movie "Corpse Bride"? Maybe something that revolves around The Van Dort's past. Your theory on The Everglot's really makes sense if you connect all of the dots. But something that reveals more about Victor's past. I was recently reading the Corpse Bride Wiki page, and I found something interesting. So I rewatched the movie. Emily already knew Victor's name before he knew hers. The page speculated that they might have met before. Could you do a theory on that? Thanks.

    The "I heart Mulch" on top of the store that Charlie goes into is the same exact thing that is written on the real Mom's coffee mug in the beginning when she first unlocks the door for Coraline, so while I agree that it looks like it is a small family owned shop, the significance of the mug displays that there could have been a matching store in Michigan, because they haven't been to the "I heart Mulch" store in Oregon yet. So therefore, the "I heart Mulch" store could've been a chain, just not a very nice looking one.

    Something else that further shows the Jones' are broke is that Mel only hands the moving guy 1 dollar, and the normal cost of 2 moving guys and 1 truck is around 150-200 dollars, per hour. The drive from Michigan to Oregon is around 34 hours, without breaks! That means the cost would've been around 6007 dollars and 75 cents. Just something that I noticed.
    Also, Mel probably would've bought Coraline the gloves, if it wasn't for the fact they were the most expensive gloves in the display. They were 25 dollars, while other pairs were 10-15. Mel probably had a little money saved up, just to buy Coraline brand new uniforms, just to make Coraline feel happier. She also probably felt guilt, and that is why as soon as Charlie and Mel sold the catalog, Mel gave Coraline the gloves.

  • @WeebaLu
    @WeebaLu Před 7 lety

    As a child i always thought Coraline just moved so that's why she didn't have a lot
    but looking back now i definitely see her parents were struggling.
    A lot of dialog Coraline's mom and dad say sounds like financial troubles
    "If things go well today" - If we get the amount we're expecting or approved today for money
    Yes the gloves were clearly expensive (I mean 30 dollars for gloves? Then again it did say sale so maybe that was the previous price, i don't know.) but you can see her mother was clearly shopping in the sale section, even shopping on a big sale day.
    Old phones - When a family can't afford a smart phone they'll stick to things like nokia flip phones because it's easier to buy and plans are usually cheaper
    No TV, Internet (I think?) or toys - Her family likely had to sell things like the TV and cancel their internet plans just to move into this place.
    Notice at the end of the movie her family talk about a pizza they had for dinner? Often times low income families will celebrate getting money again by eating out the day (basically a simple pizza or even a burger)

    I think it was really obvious that they didn't have a lot of money in the movie, but this goes more in depth!

      I thought it was on the obvious side too, but I kept seeing the comment come so I thought I'd explore the idea and take you guys on the trip with me!

    By the way, I don't like Coraline. But I like how meticulous and detailed your theories are. Your videos are much more fun to watch than the actual movie. Good job!

      Oh that's awesome! You should go exploring and see if the city in Coraline matches Ashland at all!

    The model of new beetle shown was the mid-cycle refresh available from 2006-2012. The cues are the front and rear fascia. The wheel design and the location of the hazard light button.

    ive often thought that they were poor, but it always made me think that coraline was even more douchey than she already was.

      Have you read the book version of Coraline? I can hardly stand her she seems so bratty in there versus the movie.
