    The series does make a major departure from the novel with its ending. The novel ends with Yossarian finding out Orr had rowed all the way to neutral Sweden, giving him hope that he could escape. Yossarian runs away from the base in the hopes of joining Orr. The series ends with a n*ked Yossarian flying on a mission saying ‘and drop’ to himself over and over again.
    This ties back to the first episode where Doc tells Yossarian about the Catch-22 where the only people willing to fly missions are crazy, but if anyone asks to get out of missions there are no longer crazy. Yossarian had resigned himself to his fate by willingly going on missions. Plus it shows the cruelty of someone like Scheisskopf who is sending up a man to fly despite the fact he needs medical attention. (Pop Culture Maniacs)

    For anyone wondering, Yossarion (the naked guy) is a bombardier. He had a tail gunner once who was engaged, but died because a section of the plane got shot off (I think in the mission that got him the medal). When they get a new tail gunner, it’s closer to the end of the war, and Yossarion tells the kid not to sit in the tail gunner seat because they’ve basically already won, but also because of his own regret for getting the last guy killed. A flak round tears the new guy apart, and he dies in Yossarion’s arms, which essentially is the final straw for him.

      @UrbanClamming 100% agree with you. the book is just so dense. The audio book version is 19hrs and 53 minutes long. You could listen to the whole thing driving from VA to TX. 40ish chapters and every chapter deals with a specific character. They made the mini-series because there is no way to do it justice as a movie, and they still couldn't get the whole thing in the box. Kind of mind-blowing that they even tried it. Still, it's a bummer to think how many people will just watch this and never know how much better and funnier and crazier the book actually is.

    • @abcdewadrjdi3
      @abcdewadrjdi3 Před měsícem +9

       @spiderwiz08 It's a six episode miniseries, I'd say George Clooney added about an episode of original material/plot most of which isn't great. The ending is also entirely changed, and IMO is much worse.
      So most of the content is the same w/ expected cuts, the main difference is the novel is non chronological. The setting will change by years mid sentence, sometimes multiple times a chapter and will jump between a huge cast of characters. While it's incredibly confusing it's also part of what makes the book so great. You'll get a punchline, then 10 chapters later offhandedly get the setup. The miniseries is (understandably) chronological, but this does take away a lot from the story.
      As an example. this scene is the aftermath of a tragic event that in the book is the MC's main motivation. It happens early chronologically but is only shown at the end. Meanwhile the series makes it the climax of the story.
      IMO the series doesn't really get the tone right and isn't quite as funny. In general I think it plays it too straight, it lacks the hectic insanity of the novel.
      It's a very difficult read but one of the greatest books of all time and absolutely hilarious. There's also a movie which is closer to the book
