The series stars Christopher Abbott, Kyle Chandler, Hugh Laurie, and George Clooney, who is also an executive producer alongside Grant Heslov, Luke Davies, David Michôd, Richard Brown, Steve Golin, and Ellen Kuras. The series was written by Davies and Michôd and directed by Clooney, Heslov, and Kuras, with each directing two episodes.

There’s Major Major (Lewis Pullman, perfectly befuddled), a sergeant who gets promoted to major because the brass read his name and assumed he was senior command. It turns out that Major’s father, a practical joker, named him Major (first name) Major (middle name) Major (last name) as a gag. Not wanting to look foolish by bringing a sergeant to a high-level meeting, Colonels Cathcart and Korn promote him to major right away despite his lack of nerve or qualifications.
Soon, Major Major Major Major is whisked away from a pleasant pickup basketball game and given an office he can’t fill and responsibilities he doesn’t understand.

@sethwarren8106 the system has to support the system. The IRS is a great example. It doesn't need to exist, so the system creates problems for the system to solve and companies pop up that need not exist that lobby for the system to keep on systeming.

For context, I’m an Airman, and one of my superiors in South Carolina was a Staff Sergeant (E-5, often shortened to just Sergeant) Majors. He tells the story of one day when he goes to visit an Army Base, having called a few days beforehand to say he was coming. The person who had taken the call had misheard, and thought it was a Sergeant Major (Army E-9) coming to visit, so my superior got the whole nine yards of treatment - private parking space with a driver, lunch at the SNCO/O-Club, a some really good touring. The people figured out what had happened not long after he arrived, but they had everything set up and decided to not let it go to waste.
Reminds me of an Air Force Captain calling a Navy base, he always got what he needed because they thought he was an O-6.

@@cardinalbob1to avoid this confusion, marines / army / airforce captains (o-3) are addressed as "Major" (o-4) when on board a navy vessel (since captain is o-6 in the navy, and often specifically the person in charge of the vessel). You don't want a junior officer from another branch being mistaken for the vessel's commander.
@@SantomPh Nope, acceptable shorthand is Sergeant only. Staff Sergeant is used mostly for formal kinds of events - promotion, awards, retirement, etc.
In Air Force, E-7 is Senior Master Sergeant and the “correct” shorthand is Sergeant as well, but I’ve heard people use Senior as the shorthand plenty of times.

So there wasn't a Sergeant major in WW2 (E9). but an (E8) master sergeant made $140 a month a major (O4) made $250 so it was about $100 a month. which is about $1700 more a month. but he is now responsible to buy all his personal gear and food allowance. (unless in combat) so yeah fairly big bump in pay

Back in WW2 you could do Field Promotions to commission officers. It’s actually real.
In theory you can do it even now. But there wasn't a conflict in the last years so huge that the military needed to do it
@@bennai2most military's allow this, but it has to take place on a battlefield, and it's less of you getting a new rank but rather filling the void of a senior officer who's now a kia, after the action the military's tend to send the guy for some tests to see if they can actually do the needed tasks then they tend to allow the person to officially receive the rank.

For enlisted men there 13 ranks. Then officer ranks to Major are 4 2nd LT 1st LT Captain then Major.
So if he was an E1 he'd have gone up 16 pay grades to Major.
Today's Army pay E1 24K a year O4 Major 88 to 139K a year.

I suggest anyone who hasn't read the book (by Joseph Heller) that this miniseries is adapted from to do so before watching said miniseries. I read it when I was in my 20s back in the '90s, and it's one of my all-time top-fav books that I've ever read!

@@LegatusLucius2 Officially it's called a battlefield commission when an enlisted member is granted an officers commission in the field. It allows enlisted members to bypass the normal requirements to receive a commission based on leadership and merit. From WW1 to the Vietnam war 31000 service members of all branches received battlefield commissions. Generally when there is a transition to peacetime such members are given a set timeframe to meet the normal requirements to keep their commission.
