    Here's a thought I have, what if being "completely human" would mean the Nome King could finally go out to the surface? That way he finally is able to take over the surface as well, but like the odd plot point says, all the previous population needs to be gone, so not only can the magic work, but he is able to establish a new civilization in the quasi-fairyland Oz is located in.
    Just as an aside, at one point I found out that is some of the greater lore to the Oz books, a powerful fairy decided to section of an area of land to be a new kingdom and drew it into a semi-fae realm. That area of land becomes Oz and one way or another, Ozma is a descendant of the fairy, thus the rightful ruler of the land.

    Return to Oz isn’t technically a sequel to the Judy Garland “The Wizard of Oz” movie , the only similarity being The Ruby Slippers. The rest of the movie is a mashup between the 2nd and 3rd Oz Books “The Marvelous Land of Oz” and “Ozma of Oz”. As far as I am aware this is solely book inspired, only bringing in the Ruby Slippers as they are such an iconic piece of movie history and people would be confused if they used silver slippers like in the books. Hence why Dorothy is so young here compared to Judy, as she is much more book accurate! :) The books also have more info about Roquat The Nome King and his nomes, as well as his motives :)

    This film is one of the most beautiful, terrifying, edifying and profound works of art ever made. Every frame, every line of dialogue is a multifaceted jewel-like life lesson - and most amazing of all… it’s an unsolicited collaboration with Frank L. Baum that spans pretty much the whole the 20th Century. It actually adds richness to the already timeless literary work it was based upon. Fairuza Balk is pitch perfect, the art direction and special effects are still stunning. I can’t get over this one.

    The reason there is no Munchkin Land is that that was just in the MGM film. The Munchkin Country is what we get in the books and it spans the entire eastern side of Oz. Dorothy meets Munchkins when she arrives in Oz, but she has to walk quite a while before seeing their homes.

    • @bigred8432
      @bigred8432 Před 2 lety

      No, the reason there is no Munchkinland is because they are turned to stone. There are plenty of adaptations that incorporate munchkins and munchkin villages. The fact it’s called country in the book and land is not the reason

    • @saintfighteraqua
      @saintfighteraqua Před 2 lety

      @@bigred8432 I'm well aware they are turned to stone (or something else since we don't see them at all).
      People are asking why there is no Munchkinland because they are used to the scene where Dorothy's house lands in the middle of a Munchkin village in the film. In the book it does not land in a village or even on the Yellow Brick Road. Dorothy sets out on a journey and sees the Munchkin homes later. There is no sign of a Munchkin village in Return to Oz at all. Even if it had been turned to stone we would see ruins. Instead, Dorothy's house is in the middle of nowhere.

    • @bigred8432
      @bigred8432 Před 2 lety

      @@saintfighteraqua They are turned to stone, everything living in Oz turns to stone. The movie does a good job of edging it's bets and playing safe with some of the MGM mythos, when it suits. Munchkinland, as people know it from the musical movie could very easily be that site, overrun with trees. There is a human fascination, with the unseen that I find...fascinating. People accept that the Emerald City looks entirely different because it's presented to them visually. Because Munchkinland is unseen its raises more questions. It's the same as the weird obsession people have with the red brick road, that blatantly doesn't lead anywhere and is merely a decorative feature to give the image of a lollipop.

Since early movies took a lot from theatre, and it's harder to age people in theatre, I wonder if that's what they did for the Wizard of Oz movie. They're not connected. You commented on the fact that as people are turned into ornaments, he changes. He also changes back the same way/steps as the characters are released from their ornament prisons. So I think there's a clear connection there. I think he was just gloating to Mombi. Here's a thought: since it was known that the same actor who played the Nome King also played the doctor in Kansas, what if there was a tie in somehow? Like since the doctor was trying to make Dorothy forget about OZ, which would have left the land in a bad state, it would make the Nome King more powerful. And Mombi being both a witch and the nurse, there were scenes where she was leading Dorothy with a firm hold so she wouldn't get away.

    • @melissacooper4282
      @melissacooper4282 Před 3 lety

      It's plausible. It was revealed that Dr. Worley had kept his patients locked in the cellar after he permanently damaged their minds from that electroshock therapy. Had Dorothy had that therapy herself she would've been forever locked in the cellar permanently insane! In Oz the Nome King turned everyone in the Emerald City to stone or an ornament for his collection.

    Yeah, the whole 'becoming human' bit has always been a bit of a head-scratcher. I've read the novelization, and if I recall correctly, it says something like 'well, as a nome, the Nome King is kind of stuck where he is, but as a human, he'd have no such restrictions and could go out and do pretty much whatever he wanted' - but, I mean, he already CAN do pretty much whatever he wants, and he never seems to mind being what he is, so... yeah. At a base level, it's just a visual representation of his inching closer to victory (as he absorbs their 'humanity', he increases his already considerable power), but still, it's weird. I suspect this is one of those 'got written out by a script rewrite' sort of situations, where it DID make sense, but now, no longer.
    As for the 'Nome/ no me' business, hate to bust your bubble, but L. Frank Baum already gave a pretty clear and simple reason for why they're called that. Basically, they are indeed supposed to be 'gnomes', but he thought the spelling was confusing, and since they weren't your standard gnomes anyway, he just took out the 'g'. So 'gnomes' are the little guys in the hats, 'nomes' are specifically the underground rock fairies Baum created.

      Also Mombi pointed out why didn't the Nome King simply transformed Dorothy and her friends into ornaments right away. He explained that it was more fun to watch them transform one by one after failing to guess correctly. But wasn't doing it the way he did the only way he could become more and more human looking?

      My guess is because old movies treated the experience more like a play, so Dorothy in the first Oz movie is SUPPOSED to be a little girl, and they cast a petite adult woman to play the part for her vocal skills and probably not absorbing the fact that it's not a play and the audience is going to be right up in her face KNOWING she's not a child. As a kid, I always thought Dorothy was developmentally delayed in Wizard of Oz because she seemed way too old to act so air headed about life.

    I’m confused, the witches of the North and South are supposed to be Good, while the witches of the East and West are supposed to be Wicked, in order to balance things out. Therefore, it makes NO SENSE that one of the Good Witches would turn to kidnapping. Please EXPLAIN

    • @melissacooper4282
      @melissacooper4282 Před 3 lety +1

      Well Mombi was never a good witch. She once ruled the Northern part of Oz at one point until the Good Witch of the North defeated her. There probably was an evil witch of the south until Glinda defeated her.

      Nope, she was gifted the heads for helping the Nome King. I believe as soon as he dies that's when everyone returns to normal, so it was all on him and those Ruby Red Slippers.

      I remember in the movie that the Nome King gained power from the ruby slippers that he obtained after Dorothy went back to Kansas. Mombi's part of the deal was to keep Ozma a secret from everyone since she was the rightful heir to the throne. In exchange for thirty heads from beautiful women she enchanted Ozma into a mirror.

    Im 35 and i grew up on this nmovie as a child. I watched it so manmy times! maybe even more than the wizard of oz which was another childhood favorite next to PeeWee's big Adventure! Its saddens me to see the hate people have for it! what is up with all the hate to Return To OZ on youtube!?!?! people are crazy!! this movie was extravagant. Yers it may have been "creepy" but thats how the books really were. Pick up one of the Oz books from Baum and read it. Some of the wierdest sometimes creepiest and even sometimes violent things youve ever read. This movie was such a lost art peice. Its amazing. Its not the FAKE hollywood glam that the Wizard of Oz turned out to be
