I remember watching Return to Oz on home video in the early 1990s (My mom took me to see the film when it was in theaters, but it turned out to be too intense for two-year-old me, so we had to leave halfway through!) and thinking "how did they do that with the rocks and the Nome King?" I was impressed, even though it didn't look much like the Nomes as they were illustrated in the Oz books, which I was a big fan of. Another, quite humorous side effect of watching this was that I had to explain to my sister that the term "the face of the rock" usually referred to the surface of a rock formation, not literal faces in the rock, as seen in the movie!

I was not allowed to go to the cinema as I was about 6 when it came out and my Mum though I was too young to see as it might be scary.
I instead rented every month and more from the video store in the late 80’s and early nighties. I loved it and it introduced me to more Oz and the books. Nome kings seen hold up well compared to other stop motion! - Colin

What an incredible chapter of history of this incredible if somewhat underground film! To think one can actually visit the Deadly Desert!

I LOVE the Mysterious Stranger segment. Very dark, but yet very deep in the philosophy of Good and Evil.

    • @TheOzConnection

The Deadly Desert was filmed as a set at the Elstree Studio. It was originally intended to be the Sahara Desert but budget cuts prevented this.

Elstree studios & a couple of location in the UK, i worked on it for 18 months. Trained the live billena's, got Fairuza to handle them which was the easy part as she caught on quick.

This film was one of the more impactful films on my childhood. As an adult, I now work professionally in Stop Motion in Los Angeles, and definitely thank this movie for planting those seeds. Out of curiosity, what type of clay was used to animate the rock scenes? Thanks so much for making this! ~ Amber

What a great movie. Thank God the filmmakers Doug Aberle, Will Vinton Walter Murch, et al had the good sense to make The Nome King a mountainous, distorted, rock monster. When The Nome King started to look human, he was a bearded stone gargoyle. (great performance by Nicol Williamson too) Equally awesome was that the Nome King's servants were grotesque Jack O'Lantern faces in walls & gnarly stone gargoyle type rock monsters reaching out.. I had always pictured gnomes as little old men with long beards & pointed caps associated with Vernors ginger ale so I was wary of this film. It's such a relief this film didn't have a bunch of little old bearded men running around. That would've been awful.
